Swap Team Nicknames?

Postby Unrestrict3D on Fri Jun 23, 2006 9:26 am

I've been wondering, since Utah has pretty much nothing to do with jazz music and Utah being the beehive state and all, why not have New Orleans and Utah swap team nicknames? You'ld have the Utah Hornets and the New Orleans Jazz. Now, Utah Hornets sounds a little funky but at least it'd make more sense than the Utah Jazz.

Not a bad idea, but there should be a 3 team swap

New Orleans Jazz
Charlotte Hornets
Utah Gods (i swear, Jesus needs a team, the Devil has a few)

Okay, 2 swaps and Utah make a new name.

That would imply they are doing a bad job...badly. Double negative....so you're saying those are good names?

Sorry, I meant they're just boring names. More so the Nets and Knicks, which are just altogether dull. I mean, with all the things they could get to represent New York all they can come up with is Knicks? That's a really sad name.

Knickerbockers, actually. At the beginning of the 17th century, New York City was a small Dutch community located at the south end of Manhattan Island. History tells us that the people of New Amsterdam were canny traders and wore funny pants. A knickerbocker is a descendant of these original Dutch settlers. The term can also refer to anyone who lives in the city, hence the New York Knicks.

Why would any teams switch nicknames anyways. I mean does it really matter? A name is just a name and people already have grown accustomed to the New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets and so forth. They will not change the name unless an owner is really ignorant about it.

I'm fine with the majority of team nicknames. I've just always thought Jazz made no sense for a Utah nickname. The Jazz nickname belongs to New Orleans (just like it was originally) and Utah should come up with a new nickname. Utah has cougars, coyotoes, bobcats, eagles, squirrels, black bears, bison, mountain lions, and others. It wouldn't be too difficult to come up with a new nickname.

but that'd mean getting rid of the history stockton and karl made wearing the Jazz named jerseys.

plus brand new merchandising would be a really pain as well

76'ers is because the USA capital was in philly in 1776, the year USA gained independance from Great Britain, i hardly see how 85'ers would have any special meaning to it.

It'd make more sense than the current nickname 'Jazz', that's for sure. I'd be interested in buying one of those jerseys, I've always wanted an official Utah Squirrels home jersey to show off at the local gym.

I could be imagining things or confusing an opinion column with a news report, but I seem to remember brief discussions about it when the Hornets moved to New Orleans, but the Jazz had no interest in giving up the name.
