Timberwolves: McHale offers perspective on prospects, perceptions

This is for all of those people questioning whether or not KG will be a wolf next year
Q Even if the fans were patient and you were willing to stick around for another 11 years, wouldn't this franchise have a clock ticking on Kevin Garnett's career?

A We're very aware. I've talked to KG about that, and we want to build around Kevin as much as we can. That means you've got to be cognizant of how many young guys vs. guys in their prime, and different things.

Q So does a lottery pick fit with building around Garnett?

A If you're being honest with yourself, you say that lottery pick may not play a lot next year. I'd be surprised if we get, at [No. 6], a player as ready to play mentally and physically as Rashad [McCants] was at [No. 14] last year. He just had to learn the NBA game and he played much better down the stretch.

Q Wouldn't an established veteran -- someone you could get by trading the pick, say Al Harrington or Jamaal Magloire -- fit better?

A Those guys are under contract. I can't talk about them. But of course there's a point where you say, this player would be way better for our team for the next four or five years than that rookie. Then you make the [trade] decision.

Q Garnett voiced frustration late in the season and didn't play in the final six games. What is his mood these days?

A Kevin wants to win. Kevin is very competitive. The last conversation we had -- about a week ago, he came in for a couple of hours and we talked -- he said he understands where we're at with this team and how, hopefully, a piece or two could make a real difference.

Q When other GMs call up and ask about Garnett, how do you respond?

A We're not trading Kevin Garnett.

Q You say that before you hear what they're offering?

A Well, yeah, because the teams that would call up have nothing I would trade him for anyway. We're not going to trade Kevin Garnett.

Good, I hope they never trade Garnett. I really want to see this team do well, and Garnett do well.

Riot, I knew, other people such as yourselves knew, but some people not closley following the Wolves might have still been unsure on these silly rumors. This was just a way to clear it all up.

There's no way you can trust this. Even though he said it directly, there's no knowing for sure what they reallly plan to do. This could just be to try to keep the fans happy.

They have said this kind of thing for the past 4-5 seasons...so far they have been pretty damn reliable.

I HOPE THEY DO TRADE GARNETT HE HIS NEVER GOING TO WIN A RING WITH THEM IF HE DOES NOT JUST SETTLE FOR LOWER AMOUNT OF MONEY WITH A TEAM THAT CAN CONTEND. HE WILL END UP LIKE CHARLES BARLEY VERY VERY GOOD PLAYER BUT NO RING TO PROVE HIS GREATNESS. I WERE GARNET I WOULD ASK FOR A TRADE AND GO TO ANOTHER TEAM HE JUST TO SOFT SPOKEN HE NEEDS TO DEMAND A TRADE LIKE SHAQ DID HE DERSERVES IT.......................

John Q (Chicago): Would the Pistons be better off shipping two of their starting five away for a bonafide all-star...say Wallace and Wallace for Garnett...or do they have the right pieces in place already?

SportsNation Chris Sheridan: (4:43 PM ET ) Good question, John, and I'll share this little piece of info with you: Early this past season, an Eastern Confrence coach told me that the Pistons had actually broached the subject or swapping the two Wallaces for KG and that was even before I reported that Detroit had made it known to Minnesota that they'd also be willing to do a Ben and Darko trade for KG. The Pistons are one of the few teams that was/is willing and capable of trading a pair of bigs for KG, but it takes two to tango and Minnesota just doesn;t want to give him up at this point. They only way that'll change is if KG approaches Glen Taylor and asks for a trade himself. And from all indications I've received, that ain't happening this summer.
