I remember when the cops charged D-Miles with shipping drugs and he also said "You know who I am?" Athletes are not any different from anyone else.

no big deal....people get arrested for minor infractions everyday....sometimes the person deserves it, sometimes the cop just looks to fill up his quota for the day....

Yes they are, everyone knows rich and famous people dont get charged, look at OJ simpson, thats how it works in America if you have money, the few exceptions are people like the Enron guys, but even they could get off.

Imo, the cop sounds like a real asshole. Those are some of the craziest charges I've ever heard of.

Actually, Storey should have listened to the police officer to begin with. I don't know why he was blocking the street but he should have listened to the cop when he said get out of the street. What Gilbert did wrong was approach the scene of the arrest. Police Officers are trained not to allow civilians to walk up to them while making a stop or an arrest. It's extremely dangerous for the police officer to have people walking up and creating a scene while he is doing an arrest. The officer is taught to get control of the situation and that is what he did.

Also, it's a 3 day weekend in Miami and the police are on edge. A lot of bad stuff happens in Miami on long weekends. Practically everyone has gun because it is legal to conceal and carry there.

Maybe both of them found Cliff Robinson there and were trying to smuggle some homegrown.

As Arenas was arrested, according to the police report, he said: "You can't arrest me. I'm a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards and I'm not going to leave my teammate."

Arenas said he never made such a statement.

"All I did was get out of the car to ask where they were taking Awvee so I could come get him out, and some officer comes up from behind and cuffs me," Arenas said in a phone interview.

"Everyone knows me. They know I don't have a cocky personality. I don't use my name to get in trouble and I don't use my name to get out of trouble. That would never come out of my mouth."

Arenas called Jerry Colangelo, managing director of USA Basketball, on Sunday to explain what happened. Arenas will be one of 23 players trying out for the men's national team beginning July 19 in Las Vegas, and Colangelo has emphasized character in his selections. "I just wanted him to know that this wasn't a situation where I was out of control, disrespecting police," Arenas said. "That's not how I am."

Washington Post - Gilbert Arenas initially thought he was being "Punk'd" by MTV. But he wasn't; he was being arrested in Miami Beach. "I was told it was for resisting arrest without violence," Arenas said in a phone conversation yesterday with Michael Wilbon of the Washington Post.

"I still don't understand what for. I was in a limousine, stuck in really bad traffic going to this restaurant, Ago, when I decided to step out of the car. The limo driver said, 'The guy who just got out is being arrested.' I looked over and saw seven police officers arresting Storey. . . . I didn't have the chance to say anything; an officer put cuffs on me from behind. . . . When I was taken in, I said, 'I don't mean to be rude, but can I talk to the officer who arrested me?' And the officer says, 'You were being nosy.' And I said, 'Are you putting that in your official police report, that I was being nosy?' And then he keeps asking me questions:

"'Do you have tattoos?' I said, 'Yes, I have three.' And then, 'What is your street name?' I laughed. Of course I laughed. My street name? What? Okay, it's Zero Hero. [Arenas wears "0" on his Wizards jersey.]

"'And he says, 'Oh, everything is funny to you, huh?'"

I just read that on realgm. Gold!

It will be interesting whether the police followed procedure when they arrested him, because it doesn't really indicate that it occured. If this arrest was made on the false grounds, combined with the potential damage to Gilbert's reputation, this could a nice court case agaist the Miami Police Dept.
