LeBron - Money or More Money?

James' traveling shoes?

My C-town homies are telling me people in Cleveland believe that if superstar LeBron James doesn't re-sign this summer he'll leave town after 2008, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

It's no big secret James and rapper Jay-Z have struck up a strong friendship. So much so that many believe James would leave his hometown for the bright lights and big stage of New York City. No, not the Knicks, but the Nets.

The New Jersey Nets, who are part-owned by Jay-Z, are expected to move across the river into a brand, spanking new arena in downtown Brooklyn in 2009. Another factor, moles say, is that James' $100 million deal with Nike doubles if he plays in Chicago, L.A. or New York.

That's what you call a salary-cap buster.

Stay tuned.

I know this has been talked about before but who thinks theirs a chance of this happening. I say its very remote as long as the Cavs give him the max because Bron seems pretty happy about playing for them although personalities can change dramatically in the NBA when money comes into play.

I do hope he stays in Cleveland and doesnt jump ships. The organisation is doing really well now and will be able to lure bigger names as long as they progress season by season. His got a good card in terms of personality and trust so I hope he doesnt turn into another Kobe and threaten to leave the team if things aren't done his way.

No not the Nets! If he goes there im gonna be really mad. Plus, New Jersey already has Richard Jefferson playing the Small Forward position.

I think that the Cavaliers will sign LBJ for anything though and I dont think that he is going anywhere but Cleveland.

You think a line-up with Jefferson, King James, Carter, Kidd and Krstic won't work? I'd sex that line-up up the bum.

Lebron, take more money man. If he can inject that much excitment from cleveland, imagine what he would do in a bigger markter.

How in the world are the Nets gonna sign James without trading Carter AND Jefferson?? Cause that's how much he's gonna be making

They woudlnt have either carter or jefferson by then, they'd probably have traded one away, and JKidd will be 36 by then.... I think if the Cav's beat the piston there's no way in hell he wont take the deal with the cavs.

If the Cavaliers hadn't made the Playoffs and had the run they're in the midst of right now, there might be more of a chance. He's in a good situation in Cleveland, he can get a generous extension this offseason, he would appear to be on good terms with the front office and he's playing in his home state. I guess there's always a chance but it just doesn't seem very likely at this juncture.

If LeBron were smart, here is what he would do: He would sign somewhere for the minimum, and have NIKE pick-up the difference for a max contract. It would make sense on both ends. LeBron gets to play for a team that isn't cash strapped due to his max contract, and Nike gets to have LeBron on a perenial title contender because of it? Sounds like a good deal to me, although I imagine the Players Union wouldn't allow it. goddamn unions.

Bladus, everyone would see through that. Who would support him if he joined detroit or san antonio? look at his support after he's turned around cleveland and he's carrying them.

If LeBron goes to Nets, I'll have to start going for the Nets, and that would suck arse!

What Andrew said. He has the whole of Cleveland in his hands and they have done everything for him, why would he leave?

Plus they would have to change the "We Are All Witnesses" poster.

Grey is boring....blue and orange baby!

I wonder if they are close enough that Jay-Z would let bron take a "stab" at beyonce.

After getting past the first round and possibly the second, I think LeBron's satisfied with Cleveland. Unless something drastic happens I don't think LeBron would be the type to sacrifice winning AND being in his hometown just for more money. Its not like he'll be getting paid less than most people in the NBA if he stays with Cleveland anyway.

I wonder if it constitutes tampering though, with a sponsorship deal influencing the free agency process and perhaps even offsetting money lost by taking a smaller deal with the Knicks or Nets. If it doesn't break any rules, it would surely come close.
