Chris Jackson became Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf....he was a much better player as Chris Jackson....Oliver Saint-Jean became Tariq Abdul-Wahad I believe....he was a better player as Oliver Saint-Jean....I liked his original French name better....

there's no reason he couldn't, but a change of religion would seem slightly more plausible for an NBA player....he would cop a lot less flak for doing it this way too....it's all hypothetical & will never happen, so won't be a problem....

on a side note, he'll probably become a role model for the gay community....he might end up selling a lot of 'Gay' jerseys to the gay community....

It will sell, but as X said it's hard to imagine it making the top ten. No matter how secure a man is in his sexuality, he's probably not going to walk down the street wearing a jersey with "Gay" written on the back.

I suppose if he was truly concerned about it he could spell it "Gaye" or take his middle name as a surname, but I'm guessing he's already copped enough ribbing and insults about it already and stopped caring a long time ago.

Gaye would be a good move, everyone would get a laugh out of it if he did change his name but they'd also understand the reasons.

I think Gay will sell more other merchandise than jerseys....if he has a shoe deal, they should say Rudy on them or a nickname, not 'Gay'

Anyway I don't think it matters that much, I wouldn't care about walking with a jersey with "Gay" on the back (no lame jokes please, thanks).
Especially because he's pretty well-known already, maybe they're only hyping him up so he will be known by most people and no one will think something weird when someone's wearing his jersey. At least in the US then, but that's where most jerseys are sold I think and probably the only place where people wear NBA jersey when going to school/hanging out.

I don't think his problem is work ethic (which is reportedly very good), but simply a lack of passion for the game. And the UConn sytem, of course. Everyone looks passive playing it.

I'm going to guess that every person who says "I'd wear it, I don't care" etc won't buy one. You'd get away with it in the states because people know who he is, but everywhere else

Funny story, on a related note. There was a deffensive back for the New England Patriots whose name is Randall Gay I believe. Well, after he started playing big minutes, several people tried to buy his jersey from eastbay but using theit custom jersey thing where you can pick your own name and number for a team's jersey. Unfortunatley for them, "gay" was on eastbay's banned name list and they couldnt buy the jerseys! I believe it has since been removed from the list. Eastbay just didnt want to sell jerseys with words with negative conotations on them. Fans would get way too much of a kick out of that.

and i dont see why he wouldnt sell jerseys, it could become a hit with the gay and lesbian community. all he needs is the right endorsements.

People buy Larry Bird jerseys so I don't see why not. It can't be too much worse than a jersey with "Bird" on the back. I personally wouldn't buy it but I don't buy any jerseys.
