Brand wins Sportsmanship award

Postby shadowgrin on Tue May 02, 2006 2:37 am

NEW YORK, April 30 -- Elton Brand of the Los Angeles Clippers is the recipient of the Joe Dumars Trophy presented to the 2005-06 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner, the NBA announced today.
Originally presented following the 1995-96 season, the Sportsmanship Award honors a player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court -- ethical behavior, fair play and integrity. The trophy is named for former Detroit Pistons guard and Hall of Famer Joe Dumars, the award’s first recipient.

Brand, a 2006 NBA All-Star and the Clippers’ leading scorer, was one of six divisional winners which included Chicago’s Luol Deng, Houston’s Yao Ming, Miami’s Shaquille O'Neal, New Jersey’s Jacque Vaughn and Utah’s Andrei Kirilenko.

Yes but my question is..what has he done that makes him more ethical than other players like dirk, nash etc? How do they rate it?

Can't say I know what the standards are for the award, but as AG pointed out, the players vote for this. They play with him day in & day out, I'm guessing they based their votes on the interactions they've had with the player.

As I said, Brand seems well deserving given his calm/reserved demeanor.

He deserves something in this season, with the dramatic improvement. It shows that they're much better than they used to be.

Elton Brand has won this award in his career before, so there's really no suprise.

I'm really glad to see a guy like him finally make it to the playoffs; he deserves it very much.

Maybe for his initiative in resolving his/Kobe's feud?

That was mostly the work of Bill Russell though...

Oh. Well I think he was on the all interview team, so I got confused for a bit. Still, a very deserving player to get the award.
