Scott Layden used to have Isiah's job with the Knicks. Most call giving Allan Houston a $100mil contract was his biggest blunder, though he also assembled rosters that featured expensive logjams at point guard and a lack of size.

For the moment I'm still inclined to pick Layden. While Isiah has made some bonehead moves and the Knicks haven't climbed out of the hole Layden dug (and some would say Isiah continues to deepen), his tenure with the Knicks has been shorter so he hasn't had the same opportunity to right the ship as far as time is concerned. Also, the moves Isiah makes don't necessarily look too bad on paper. For example, Steve Francis for Trevor Ariza is daylight robbery in terms of talent but doesn't work in practice since Marbury is already there and unless two similar players of the same position can tailor their games to play alongside and complement one another, it's not going to work.

It's not like Thomas took a team that was a perennial champion and suddenly destroyed them. Layden had done a fair amount of damage before Thomas came along. For the moment I'll give Layden the edge since Thomas' deals can at least look good on paper.

I'd say Layden, his biggest stars were Sprewell & Houston if I'm not mistaken, right? Or had Spree left already? Not too sure about it.

That's why I'm going with Isiah, Andrew. He came here and said he was going to change the culture of the Knicks and rebuild. Guess what - he's doing the same sh!t previous Knick regimes have done. He is, without a doubt, the WORST GM in Knick history. He's unqualified for the job. The warnings were there(CBA), we didn't pay attention. We fell for Isiah's line & phony-ass smile. I would have fired him on the spot after the Eddy Curry deal. The fact that he hasn't been shown the door tells you about our brain-dead owner. He's more upset with Brown than Isiah. The d---head has no clue.

If any of you young Knick fans think Isiah & Dolan can turn things around, I have a bridge to sell you. This franchise is dead.

It's not dead, but they're pretty much messed up for the next 4-5 years at least. Since they can't really trade those huge contracts, their best bet's to try and gell together. Nobody's going anywhere with the enormous salary problems they'd be carrying with them.

i gotta disagree with you on this Jeffx

trading Camby, Mark Jackson and Nene for a injuried McDyess?

How about trading patrick ewing and getting glenn rice, then trade him for Eisley and Shandon Anderson?

Van Horn for Spree?

Houston $100?

Layden picked up role players and overpaid them. No name guys, it's tough to take on those type of players.

not to say Isiah is great, but you have to admit at least he gets big name players which could be sorted with the right trades.
If you check Isiah's trades the worst might of been Tim Thomas for van horn/nazi.
He just needs help finding team chemistry right now. Who will play good with who they have. This offseason Isiah will do something that'd help the knicks next year since he should at this point understand that its chemistry issues they knicks are having.
Hopefully he'll make a run at KG this summer, but more than likely will pick up Keyon Martin from the nuggets for maybe Jalen Rose/ Marice Taylor since here contract are expiring.

edit- worst signing is Jerome James, but that's the equilvence of Travis Knight in the Layden era

Isiah, no doubt. I was wondering if he wants to send Frye to Denver for Martin?

Isiah at least has a strong reputation for drafting solid players and while he's assembled a team with overpaid bums, most of them do/did have talent.

I'm gonna say Layden on this one too. He did nothing but get like one or two positions, forwards and point guards.

Check out this roster from one of Layden's last games:
K Thomas
C Weatherspoon
D Mutombo
S Anderson
H Eisley
O Harrington
C Ward
M Doleac
F Williams
M Sweetney
A Houston
K Van Horn

There's no real youth there. No future really except for Sweetney(who's now gone.) Sure Isiah traded away alot of these guys, but he has guys that have potential. I think if the Knicks ran a fastbreak style offensive game then they'd be muuuuch better than they are now. I think the Knicks roster is pretty good actually, it's just that Larry Brown isn't the right coach for the team that Isiah built. But imagine taking that roster and somehow getting guys like Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury, Jalen Rose, Eddy Curry, Quentin Richardson, Jamal Crawford, etc. I bet nobody thought it was possible. But the Knicks now have legit players talentwise. There's hope, there's a future. Sure the Knicks lost a potential no. 1 pick this year in the draft but knowing Isiah, don't be surprised if he manages to get one. Plus the Knicks did excellent in last years draft.

Wouldn't shock me - after all, Martin's injured, a pain-in-the-ass, and has a bloated contract. He's perfect for Isiah.

Everyone talks about talent. You don't go far in the playoffs without guys who are willing to sacrifice, rebound, and play hard-nosed defense. We don't have that on the Knicks. What we have are a bunch of names, like Doc Rivers said. No chemistry at all. Unless Isiah gets smart, it'll take more than 4-5 years to straighten this mess out. I'd start with dumping the losers who complained about Brown.

True, he's made some of the same mistakes and hasn't followed through on promising to clean up Layden's mess. But like I said, he hasn't had the same amount of time to "work his magic" so to speak (and believe me, I use the term extremely generously, indeed sarcastically). Layden had that extra year or two to try and fix the problem (which he didn't) as well as make more blunders (which he did) which to me means Thomas has at least a little way to go before he overtakes Layden in terms of bonehead moves and has the opportunity to do something to redeem himself.

But I do see what you're saying. I suppose you do have to consider the fact Thomas has made an already bad situation look even worse.

I've seen enough of Isiah's 'magic', Andrew. He has to be stopped now before he wrecks this team further.

Now I'm hearing the Knicks are taking a look at Kenyon Martin - a guy with a bad knee, questionable attitude and $71 million on his contract. I'm really starting to hate the Knicks organization & the team.

Isaiah has taken a plethora of underachieving players who have been content with losing throughout their entire career. They have shown more interest in contracts than winning. There is no future for the Knicks. The Clippers always had talent, but a losing culture, and the same thing is true here. The only difference is that the Clips had young talent and a losing culture, and here we have older players (hence even less future).
