And on the topic of Kobe getting a new number, it will be fairly weird seeing Kobe wearing anything other than his #8, but its just a number actually, nothing else really, other than the fact he wore 24 in High school. Anyone know when he will be changing it? Effective the next game or next season?

I doubt so, I think there is a contract or something when they are producing a jersey. If not one of the most popular jersey selling today could still be jordan's bulls no. 23.

Anyway i got a rodman's 91 black bulls jersey. :D

That's the thing. You hear Ewing, there's about a .5% chance you think of number 6 in Magic. Shaq's change was 2 numbers, big deal. Still in the lower 30's. Kobe's not only changing to 2 digit places, but a 16 number change. This is a big thing. It will be very weird trying to get used to this. I don't like it, and while I don't like Kobe, I still don't think he should change.

Shaq going from 34 to 32 IS less significant, because he had worn 32 with the Magic already while Kobe has been 8 throughout his NBA career.

Figured I'd beat everyone to it.

and no you'll eventually lose because Kobe changing from #8 to 24 is significant, especially from a marketing standpoint.

I was reffering to the conversation with Hipn as going for the rest of my life. I wont lose becuase a jersey number switch isnt significant to anyone other than geeks who collect memrobillia or are fascinated by teams who change their logo/colours regularly. So whats so significant by him changing his number? He'll have 2 digits now? Yep, the world will never be the same.

I may be a little late, but Shaq doing a minor number change when switching teams is less significant. Since Kobe is switching while staying on the same team, and it's drastic, I think it's more significant.

How though? Simply saying its significant doesnt make it so.. He's still the same player, same team, different number? It's not that big of a deal.. It's not like he's comming out or similar, its just a number change.

I think what you're missing here is that it's the "most significant number change." Just because it's significant in terms of number changes, doesn't mean it's significant in terms of the actual game.

Interesting, but I really thought wearing #8 was one of the Kobe's better decisions. It's just a rarely used and unique number, non-related to anyone really famous (Marques Johnson and Latrell Sprewell come to mind and I really don't think anyone will remember Antoine Walker as a good player) from the past and you remember it easily. #24 is more of a 'classic' number to me, without the legendary feel. I think this will be only a 1-year episode, like Jordan's #45 was, just to return Kobe to the #1 among the jerseys sold.

But then again, everything we have to say about this matter is pointles, because Jack Bauer is gonna destroy Kobe for taking his number.

Edit: This is just in:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - In a daring move, Laker guard Sasha Vujacic has changed his number to number 8, the previous number worn by superstar Kobe Bryant after he decided on a number change to ole retro 24.

"I've always wanted to be like Kobe", Vujacic said to reporters at his Los Angeles motel room. The new self-proclaimed "SV8" went on to say, "I'm going to like pretend to be him..you know? Fly around the room pretending to score 81 points. I might even try that fist chest thing that he does."

Vujacic was later spotted running around with his new jersey on imitating Kobe Bryant. Teammate Aaron McKie spotted Vujacic in the gym, and later told reporters, "He had the tounge going, the high arc, the swagger, and he was even saying the "Love Me or Hate Me" stuff. Man, that was crazy!"

Kobe Bryant could not be reached for comment. Shaquille O'Neal refused comment on either jersey change.

haha that's just crazy! edit: lol

Has anyone thought of this from Kobe's perspective? What if this is something he has wanted to do for a long time?

Strange. I can't imagine Kobe in anything but good ol' no. 8. And in addition to that: Which number will the Lakers retire once he ends his career? I reckon Kobe is full of bull.

I think the number 24 signifies him being 1 better than Jordan....who knows, he's got a pretty big ego, he might have thought that when he wore it in high school....it's not number 7, 13 (Wilt) or 25 (Gail I believe) so I'm glad about that :P

Although it is "JUST" a number, #8 has become a part of Kobe through out his years in the NBA. KB24 just doesn't sound right.

On topic: who cares if he changed his #.He just did that for atention. In my opinion he knows that he can't win the chahpionship and he did this just to get some atention.Oh well thats just Kobe.

I'm just glad I can finally get a Kobe jersey. Too many posers over here walk around with the #8 jerseys, half of them not knowing who the hell he is, half of them being Asian. Good times.
