"Are you basing it on the regular season or the playoffs? I mean, it's hard to compare guys that have never been to the Finals to other players. If you gear yourself to play six months of the year, it's completely different than gearing yourself to play nine months a year. My whole focus was trying to gear myself to play nine months a year."
-- Larry Bird, responding to Tommy Heinsohn's comment that Paul Pierce was the greatest offensive player in Celtics history

bird just doesnt want to admit how good pierce is
Sat Mar 25, 2006 2:55 pm
Who the hell is Tommy Heinsohn?
Fitzy wrote:bird just doesnt want to admit how good pierce is
Yeah... except Bird is still better then him, on offence and overall.
Sat Mar 25, 2006 3:05 pm
Tommy Heinsohn is a Hall Of Famer and used to play for Boston, coached them too. I don't agree with him.

also broadcasts NESN celtics games

he should be. ( ok well theres many good celtics players and pierce isn't one of them up there..)
pierce haven't gotten the celtics far yet.
Sat Mar 25, 2006 4:43 pm
bird is awesome
Sat Mar 25, 2006 4:45 pm
I must also respectfully disagree with Heinsohn, though I'm somewhat surprised he gave Paul Pierce such high praise. He's one of the former players/coaches that tends to downplay anything that happened after 1979.
Sat Mar 25, 2006 5:40 pm
In 1on1 offense i'd pick peirce over bird. But on team play and court smarts id pick bird.
Sat Mar 25, 2006 9:23 pm
Larry Bird is the basketball Jesus! The end.

You're forgetting Bill Russell. There's no way Bird can deny him.
Sat Mar 25, 2006 10:06 pm
He's not basketball Jesus else he would have already died in his prime for the good of the game.
Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:21 pm
Well...he did retire somewhat early because of his back injury but I still wouldn't go into that comparison.

Oh god. I watched a Celtics game broadcast on NESN before, and those guys basically lulled me to sleep their commentating was so bad.

At least Bird won an MVP Award, Pierce hasn't, so in my boks its always Bird>Pierce!
Sun Mar 26, 2006 9:43 am
I wouldn't say Bird is better than Pierce overall, but he is a better offensive player in my mind. I would consider Pierce more athletic obviously and better defensively.
Sun Mar 26, 2006 10:46 am
How many championships has Pierce won?
You can't be considered great, unless you win at least one. Or at the very least carry your team to the nba finals.
Sun Mar 26, 2006 11:18 am
Bird is one of the greatest players of all time. Paul Pierce is just your everyday superstar that has yet to properly lead his team. Enough said.
Sun Mar 26, 2006 12:51 pm
Pierce and Walker led the Celtics to the eastern conference finals in 2002.
That team was HORRIBLE, yet Pierce and Walker were the dynamic duo, and they did what was needed.
And LeBron James hasn't done anything, but people still consider him great. So what are you talking about, Jowe?
BTW, the commentating on New England Sports Tonight is not bad at ALL.
Matter of fact, it's VERY good. The only thing is that Tommy Heinson is ridiculously biased for the Celtics, but he literaly knows EVERYTHING about basketball. If you listen to what he says, you'll see.
I mean saying that about Paul Pierce is probably wrong, but when he says "well in this situation, you do this or that" he's ALWAYS correct. Him and Mike Gorman (the other Celtics commentator) have been announcing for Celtics games since 1981, and they together do a good job announcing.
Sun Mar 26, 2006 1:05 pm
Pierce and Walker led them to the finals, yes. But what has Pierce been able to do ever since Walker left? He hasn't been able to properly shoulder the offence for this team, despite having solid supporting players.
I listened to a couple of Celtics game and I found their commentators ridiculously boring. They said about a 5 word sentence every 10 seconds.
Sun Mar 26, 2006 1:15 pm
Are you kidding me? See, this is what I hate. People that think they know what they're talking about, but really don't. Pierce has actually been teaching his entire team what offence is. He's an incredible leader, and loves to be with the young guys.
And Don't you live in canada?

Sweet sweet irony.
