All role player team

Postby gergerjai on Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:47 pm

Looking at the Pistons team I came up with this idea. Because of the team record, many consider their starters all-star caliber players. however, probably none of them alone can turn a franchise around. Instead, had any of them been put on another team and built around an superstar, he would still have been a very important piece, but as a part of the supporting cast. So what is your team of favourite role players? This is mine:
C- Camby- monstorous on the defensive end.
PF- Chandler- cleaning the glass/ Milicic- blocks really well, a little more preferred because of his occasional threat from mid-range.
SF- Diaw- seemingly decent in every aspest of the game except outside shooting. An Odom-type player with better D.
SG- AI2- a strong defender, and a little of anything on the court. Entertaining dunks.
PG- Andre Miller or Luke Ridnour. Both have good court vision, but Miller has better D, while Ridnour is quicker and shoots better from long range.

Or I can simply pick the Detroit starting five.

C - Camby - Shot Blocker + Rebounder
PF - Gooden - Very good rebounder and has passed Boozer
SF - Prince/Bowen - D
SG - Ricky Davis - Best Role Player that can score IMO
PG - Luke Ridnour/Brevin Knight - Very good passers and Ridnour can shoot too

I wouldn't call Camby a role player, he was an MVP candidate early in the season.

yeah Camby is a little too high profile for a role player. Role players generally aren't that good, hell he's the the key to Nugs success behind Melo.

I'll try and pick guys who are like the role players of role players... or get very little attention...

C: Joel Pryzbilla
PF: Drew Gooden
SF: Ruben Patterson
SG: Morris Peterson
PG: Jameer Nelson

Wow... even the Hawks would blow that team out

Mike Miller and Ricky Davis aren't role players.
You could make a case for some other players mentioned not being role players, but what are the criteria?
I mean Brad Miller is an awesome pick, which I could never have thought of. But when you think about it.. he's been to the All-Star game.

I think star player is someone who's a first or second option and/or a considarable defensive presence. Mike and Brad Miller are neither of those.

I like that list Riot, you have the No. 1 list & you spelt his Nocioni's name right (Y)

although I like Joel Przbyilla ahead of Chris Kaman....aside from that, great....thought you might have Trenton Hassell in there at SG instead of Hoiberg though

The first person that came to mind when I read the topic was Robert Horry.

As much as I love Hassell, I love Hoiberg even more. He is one of the best teammates and shooters in the league. He's a great role player because he does everything well and he plays smart basketball. He's extremely underrated and the Wolves this year really miss him.

And since he has a bigger profile than Marucs Camby, you might say he's not a role player. More like a sideshow.

some of ya'll are just listing players that aren't true role players. I mean theres games where Ricky Davis & Brad Miller carry their respective teams. It's not once in a blue moon either.

When i think of role players i think of guys who come in to do a specific task....Reggie Evans (rebounding), Bruce Bowen (Defence), Udonis Haslem (Rebounding) or guys who do a lot of things but in small doses (Jon Barry was a perfect example). Not guys that can be the teams best player in a lot of games.

You can consider Mike Miller a role player because he has never been an all-star or has recieved all-star recognition. He's basically a 6th man and not getting all-star type minutes.
