Slam 1996 Re-draft/A rant about that damn magazine.

Postby Fenix on Fri Mar 03, 2006 12:41 am

Slam, a magazine with very talented by overally dumb writers, decided to do a redraft of the 1996 draft class - practically saying how it should be as opposed to what actually happened. This is how their list looks like (they went all the way to the #29, but I'll mention only first eleven, All-Star caliber players:

1. Allen Iverson
2. Kobe Bryant
3. Ray Allen
4. Stephon Marbury
5. Steve Nash
6. Jermaine O'Neal
7. Antoine Walker
8. Shareef Abdul Rahim
9. Peja Stojakovic
10. Marcus Camby
11. Zydrunas Ilgauskas

If you ask me, this list is a joke. OK, AI is the only one who made it to the Finals on his own, so you can make a strong case for him being the best player from that class (as for now, we still don't know what Kobe is up to). Then comes Kobe, I agree with that also. Ray Allen. OK, he had a more consistent career than the guys taken after him. But Marbury as the #4? You gotta be kidding me. You take Marbury over Steve Nash only because he has averaged 20 and 8 for his career? What the hell? Not only that, you take Marbury over Nash AND Jermaine O'Neal, a legitimate 20 and 10 player for the past four years? Over the big Z who became one of the League's finest centres once he moved past his foot injuries? Over Camby, the oft injuried but supremely valuable big? And you take Peja, Shareef and Antoine over those two? It just proves me that guys at Slam know nothing about basketball and they will keep on leaving in their fog of 'knowledge' until the day they stop promoting Steve Francis, Jamaal Crawford, Marbury and other lost cases of their kind as the next big things, mistakely viewed as malcontents.

This magazine is heavily biases towards African-Americans. This pretty much explains everything apart from the fact that Iverson is listed above Bryant.

You are right, this list isn't really good, but your picks aren't either.

You say Marbury shouldn't be no. 4 because he has never accomplished anything, never lead his team anywhere.

So yeah, Steve Nash should be above him, Jermaine O'Neal is a 50/50 since he hasn't really led his team anywhere either, those Pacers squads were too talented to give him the kudos for any success (if there was any real success).

Walker has done nothing, same goes for Shareef, Peja, Camby and Ilgauskas.
I'd take Marbury over Camby, since Camby was had way too much injury troubles.

Z is overrated as anyone in this list, he's one of the finest centers in the league? Maybe he is a top 5 center of the 10-15 true centers in the league, what an accomplishment!

The reason you don't like Slam is because you're a New York hater - you have pretty good reasons to be right now, but you express you hate whenever and wherever you can, a little overdone IMO. The Slam writers on the hand, are mostly New York area people, biased in Marbury's favor because he's been 'down with them' since day 1.

Diversion tactics. One issue out of 24 dedicated to a white guy and poof!, speculation goes out the window.

Oh, c'mon. That's your typical NY mentality - I don't like these Knicks and now I'm a NY hater. The facts are: Jermaine is a All-Star big and those don't come along too often and is pretty suitable as your second option and Z for your third. But Marbury is unsuitable for anything - he can't be your first option, because we see/saw/will see where that gets you and he can't be anything less, because he'll demand a trade. Been there, done that. And Camby - as often as he's been injured - is still better than always-healthy likes of Rahim and 'Toine.

You don't "don't like" these Knicks, you hate them, just admit it. you hate Marbury, you hate Crawford, you hate Francis. I "don't like" those guys, you hate them.
The facts are: Jermaine is a All-Star big and those don't come along too often and is pretty suitable as your second option and Z for your third.
Jermaine is an All-Star, that's a fact. But it's only due to lack of anything better. The fact that there are no good big man in the league doesn't mean you should pick the best available that high.

That wasn't the point I was trying to prove, Slam just hypes anyone up no matter what the skin color. There just happen to be a little more black players in the NBA nowadays.

Another fact is that Z and Jermaine are better basketball players than Marbury. Afterall, the last time I checked basketball was still a 5-on-5 game. He isn't clutch (for one - look at his playoff stats), is a loser and a genuine moron. BTW, nave we ever heard of him again on topic of giving millions to the victims of the Katrina thing?

And yes, you're right. I hate them. I hate selfishness of Marbury, retarded basketball mind of Crawford and I hate how Francis cries when his boyfriend gets traded. I HATE THEM. They are the cancers of NBA, along with Currys, Roses, Qs and Browns of this league. And yes, I'm grateful that they ended in the same place, but I'm not enjoying myself because that happens to be New York. I have great respect for the city, for its people and basketball history. But that should make guys at Slam such homers just because some of these players happen to be from NY.

Yeah, they always have an excuse for why his teams are constantly losing. Either lack of talent surrounding him, bad chemistry or just fate. For a such a badass talent who has been on a lot of very different teams, isn't it a bit funny that the only thing constant is him losing? If the Knicks want to develop their big men, they shouldn't be surrounding them with four shoot first PGs. Shaq said Francis would stunt DH12's development, if he hadn't been moved, now imagine what will Francis AND Marbury AND Crawford AND Nate do to Frye, Curry and Lee and all of them aren't half of the talent Howard is to begin with.

I went out and bought SLAM the other day... it had a Bogut related article so I figured I should. I literally stopped reading about 1/4 of the way through. The amount of completely retarded and unnecessary ebonics they randomly throw in is disturbing. I mean one minute it sounds like an overly-dramatised English essay, then they decide to get ghetto and say shit like "Fam" and call people "Money".

I think part of the problem is that I picture some fat white guy (like Lang Whittaker, king of Wiggers) sitting at his desk typing it with some 50 Cent playing in the background.

That pretty much is SLAM in a nutshell.

The fact that they refuse to acknowledge Stephon Marbury's idiocy is annoying. I actually stopped reading it a few years ago.

At least when they re-do (or re-did) the 1998 Draft, we can see where they place Jason Williams and answer the eternal question...which does a wigger like more...black people or other wiggers?

(though Jason Williams is pretty cool, wigger or not)

Marbury is and always has been a brilliant player with shitty attitude which is also very important, and that brings him down big time, his skills are enough to be in the top 3 of that draft, and i would take AI over Kobe.
And SLAM has cool posters :)
I'll be back for EASO 2007, feel the terror like its 05 again i own this game!!
