Houston Waives Jon Barry

In a very surprising move, the Rockets waived guard Jon Barry today.Barry was a key cog to the Rockets 51-win team in 2004-05 and spoke to the fans in the season opener about supporting the Rockets as they did the Astros. Barry then went out and scored 24 points on 8-10 shooting to go with 3 steals in a 98-89 win over the Kings. But it's been downhill ever since for Barry and the Rockets. With other players out to injury, Barry didn't quite show the same touch and then came the injuries. He suffered a bruised left foot in late November and then a calf injury that caused problems until late February. All in all, Barry has missed 37 games this year, mostly due to injury. The last handful of those games saw Barry healthy, but Jeff Van Gundy did not call his number for reasons unknown. The play of the Rocket guards and shooters, around stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, were a big reason for the Rocket success last season, but in less than a year Barry, Mike James, Bobby Sura and Scott Padgett are all elsewhere.

Never saw this one coming, but the Rockets were pretty full at the Guard spot, but off all people though. Well, well.

his statsa re not bad but hes getting old..... :?

Thu Mar 02, 2006 8:38 am

Yes he is gettin old.
Maybe a team like ... New Orleans would pick him up.
They need a few veterens to teach some of the guys.
Rockets had alot of guards so I kinda saw something like this coming.
Good luck to him.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 8:43 am

he's been waived because he was injured. It leaves room for the Rockets to sign again John Lucas, or another young player currently in minor league

Stats don't mean everything..He was pretty clutch last year in the regular season and the playoffs.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 10:56 am

With these FA's... can teams pick them up now?

So can the Spurs pick up another Barry??

Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:03 am

Other teams can pick them up but there's restrictions as far as them being eligible for the Playoffs.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:04 am

Wait.. There's a rule about they gotta be picked up before a certain date and play like a minimum ammount of game before they are eligible for the playoffs right?

Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:15 am

No, they have to be waived by a certain date. They can then be signed at any time before the Playoffs and be eligible, so long as they were gone by the cutoff (March 1st).

Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:18 am

ah i see!

So Barry should be eligible... would be good to see 2 Barrys in San Antonio! (Y)

Great, then I'll have even a harder time keeping up.
"..and Barry drives, dishes back out to Barry for the open three, rebound by Barry;kicks it out again..."

Thu Mar 02, 2006 2:14 pm

hm. i kinda liked barry, good guy, some great moments, though... ah. oh well.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 3:47 pm

Barry was a great player, he brought flare to Denver a while back as well. But face it, he is getting old, and he was not able to recover from his latest injuries. Good move I guess.

Pfftt... Toronto had 3 Williams-es at one point last year.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 4:59 pm

spurs might get Jon barry. Robert horry is sliping and they could use another 3pt shooter (Y)
