TORONTO -- Bryan Colangelo joined the Toronto Raptors as its president and general manager Tuesday, ready to leave his imprint on a new team after splitting with a club that didn't offer him a contract extension.

Colangelo was named NBA executive of the year after the Suns won 62 games last season.

Colangelo was introduced a day after he resigned as general manager and president of the Phoenix Suns -- a team in which his father, Jerry Colangelo, is chairman and chief executive. Bryan Colangelo replaces Rob Babcock, who was fired Jan. 26 by the Raptors.

Bryan Colangelo was the NBA's 2005 executive of the year after the Suns' retooled roster won a league-high 62 games.

There goes my fucking day...

Good luck Toronto.

The Colangelos' era in Phoenix practically came at an end when sarver bought the team.

Papa Colangelo is still the team's CEO for this year, but he has teh administrative power of the King of England by now.

Plus, Colangelo Jr. will now be paid 3 mil per year instead of 1, and that is always a prudent business decision. (Y)

WOOT WOOT !
Can't wait till off-season and see what he does with this team.
Good luck to Phoenix and you too Colin

The NBA is never short of reminders that people will sell their services to the highest bidder, and loyalty is seen as a weakness as much as it's looked upon as an admirable trait.

how about the loyalty of the suns to him.. they didnt offer him a contract extension..

It should be interesting to see what he can do with that raptors team.. goodluck to him.

Well I guess his daddy is leaving Suns too, after his CEO contract is up. :D Maybe it's time for Raptors to win something

Wed Mar 01, 2006 8:34 pm

Wow, a smart move by both Colangelo and Raptors. And I like Sarver less and less.

Wed Mar 01, 2006 11:14 pm

Dammit :x

Toronto are sort of in the same position as Phoenix were when he turned them into a 62 win team. Young star PF, cap space, some other tools on the squad. Toronto will be scary this offseason. But soon Colangelo will realise it was easier to lure players to Phoenix than Toronto.

Well, he'll certainly be in a better position to get skinny Canadian PGs up there. And I don't think he won't be able to get someone like Nene, a foreign player who probably doesn't even care where he plays. In the same manner - doesn't he have some weird Canadian roots? A legit, strong guy in the middle is just what Toronto needs. That and a star on the perimeter. I bet 10$ that Morrison ends in Toronto when it's all said and done.

I think I need a hug. We finally have a qualified and competent GM. Huzzah!

Thu Mar 02, 2006 7:12 am

Happy we got him, but I still want to know the real reason to why he left the Suns for the Raptors.

1. Sarver

2. Previous salary= 1 million

Current salary= 3 million

3. Daddy Colangelo will be out of the team next year.

I'd flip reasons 2 and 3, but yeah. The team was sold, Jerry is leaving the team next year when the sale is complete, and the new management doesn't really want extra Colangelos sitting around. And that price difference sure didn't hurt the offer.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 7:39 am

Sarver? Who? What?

Thu Mar 02, 2006 7:39 am

He's well worth the 3 mil per year contract. Sarver was an idiot for not offering a contract.

YES!!!!1!!1!11!!1!!1!

Ahh, this feels good. Be happy Colin :P

Colangelo is a great guy :D

Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:39 am

I think he is great but I don't exactly beleive it is a guarantee for him to turn around the fortunes of the raptors. I'll wait and see if he is the best thing since sliced bread.

Touche. And I suppose it's no different than anyone else looking and interviewing for a new job while they're still employed. Of course, most people would have to go about it more quietly since seeking employment elsewhere on company time is grounds for dismissal in some places.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 10:20 am

Not in Detroit.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 10:27 am

after the week I've had, Colangelo made the right decision

Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:01 am

toronto to be a contender by next season hopefully :D , and a championship by 2009 or 2010  (OF COURSE WITH BOSH)

Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:03 am

Hardly a contender... The Raptors are still rebuilding and acquiring a few free agents and getting a few more rookies definitely isn't a tell tale sign that we're going anywhere.

Thu Mar 02, 2006 11:19 am

k, i did maybe stretch it way too far, but the year after bosh signs an extension with us, i think we'll be a bottom seed playoff team atleast.
