Heal to lead Dragons
The South Dragons' inaugural Philips Championship campaign will be led by one of Australia's best ever players, four-time Olympian and 363-game NBL veteran Shane Heal.
The 35-year-old, who retired from domestic basketball after winning the 2003 Championship with the Sydney Kings and from international competition after leading the Australian Boomers at the Athens Olympics in 2004, has signed a one-year deal to captain the new Melbourne franchise.
Three years to the day after scoring 23 points in the Kings' championship-sealing Game 2 victory over the Perth Wildcats - his last NBL appearance - Heal talked about the challenge which has brought him out of retirement.
"I had to have a lot of boxes ticked - from family, to schools, to business, to having a good quality team to be able to play with - but one thing that certainly helped was the Commonwealth Games final, New Zealand-Australia," he explained.
"Walking in to Vodafone Arena with 10,000 people and knowing that was going to be the home court. I think that's going to be very exciting for all Dragons fans."

Heal joined fellow Dragons recruits Frank Drmic, Jacob Holmes, Matt Shanahan and Joe Ingles meeting the media at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Thursday.
Given the talent of those first five signings, neither Heal nor Dragons chairman Mark Cowan shied away from setting high expectations for the club.
