Wilts #'s to team wins the year he won MVP compared to Kobe

Postby John WB on Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:33 am

Wilt Chamberlain won the league's MVP 4 times. Each year he did was a result of team success. His team finished at least 23 games over .500 each year he won it.

MJ won the MVP 6 times, in 1988, 91, 92, 96 and 98.

the 88 Bulls went 50-32, 91 went 61-21, 92 went 67-15, 96 went 72-10, and 98 went 62-20.

Larry Bird won the MVP 3 times, from 1984-1986.

the 84 Celtics went 62-20, 85 went 63-19, and 86 went 67-15.

Magic won the MVP 3 times, in 1987 and 1989-90.

the 87 Lakers went 65-17, 89 Lakers 57-25, and 90 went 63-19.

That's a pretty shitty way to make your "point"

Seriously, this is a good thread, he presents a lot of good information, why are you guys trying to ruin it? I think it proves that Kobe will probably not win the MVP but guys like Chauncey, Nash, Dirk, and Brand are the frontrunners.

Nice research. (Y)

I hope this info will drive into people's heads that an overall team record do matter, and not just solely on individual performance. There has to be a correlation with individual performance and team win totals, where Kobe is seriously falling behind on.

Nice research and backing it up with history.

you my friend..should be banned for uselessness.

Anyway, anyone who isnt delusional knows that Kobe doesn't deserve it this year. With his numbers...and a winning laker's team...he would deserve it hands down. It has nothing to do with kobe hating as many people believe.

Stop comparing Kobe with greats like Wilt. Different era, different type of game, different rules.

I'm not sure if you guys are stupid, or just stupid, the comparison is not Wilt vs Kobe, it's comparing MVP trophies to personal stats and wins, and who better to use for personal stats than Wilt. As you can see, Wilt did not win MVP in his 4 best PPG years. Some people still can't get it through their mind, the guy that averaged 19 PPG and won 60 games won it over him even though he averaged 50 PPG. Kobe isn't even close to 50 PPG right now.

The last 17 years, no MVP has been on a team with less than I think 56 wins.

2 of Wilt's 4 MVP's, he got while averaging less than 25 PPG. It's to all those people who keep thinking Kobe's scoring is something that has never been achieved before and that he should get MVP for barely breaking .500, just because he's scoring a lot.

Yes, every great players is valuable to their team, take them out and their team sucks, but MVP is not about your personal stats if they aren't leading to your team being a top team. Whether it's because of you, or because of the team around you, no one truly cares.

The Lakers are barely in the playoff picture. There is no way Kobe is the MVP. Perhaps most prolific scorer, but not the MVP.

If Kobe had led the team to wins against the Hornets, Bobcats and the other teams that they have lost to recently, without Lamar and Mihm... then he would be considered a MVP candidate. However, the fact that the Lakers have now basically crumbled... just really makes him look less like the League MVP.

Pretty much backs up the "Kobe isn't MVP simply because of the 81 points" side of the debate from a historical standpoint. If Kobe leads the Lakers to an unthinkable record then he'll take home the MVP, not for piling up the points but for carrying a team places it wasn't expected to go.

His point is to dispel the whole "Kobe for MVP" talk in the minds of half of this forum by saying that Kobe's team needs the W's if he has a shot at MVP regardless of his individual performance.

If I am right...100% of the MVPs have made it to the second round. Kobe might break this record. Wow another record for Kobe!

Yes you could have gone there, but my post puts it all together.

The point is you gotta win games and a lot of games(gotta be on the top 1 or 2 teams in the NBA) to be an MVP, not merely be a .500 team no matter how good your numbers are.

fgrep15 did a great job summing up why.

The last 10 MVPs
Year Player Team Record PPG
04-05 Steve Nash Phoenix 62-20 15.5
03-04 Kevin Garnett Minnesota 58-24 24.2
02-03 Tim Duncan San Antonio 60-22 23.3
01-02 Tim Duncan San Antonio 58-24 25.5
00-01 Allen Iverson Philadelphia 56-26 29.8
99-00 Shaquille Oneal Los Angeles 67-15 29.7
98-99 Karl Malone Utah 37-13 23.7
97-98 Micheal Jordan Chicago 62-20 28.7
96-97 Karl Malone Utah 64-18 27.4
95-96 Micheal Jordan Chicago 72-10 30.4

Each is at least 30 games over .500, cept the Utah team in 99, which was a lockout season.
