Rate Your NBA Knowledge

Postby J@3 on Thu Jan 19, 2006 3:35 am

I'm interested to see how other people grade their own NBA knowledge. I'll give an example, if you guys want to include other categories or whatever feel free. Also the method of rating, whether it be A, B, C etc, 1 to 10 or 1 to 100, it all works out the same in the end.

Categories I'd come up with in the last 15 seconds. Just imagine the words "Knowledge of" are in front of each of these:

Your favourite team:
Other teams in the L:
Your favourite player:
Team statistics:
Individual player stats:
In-Depth stats:
Basketball Strategy:
NBA History: (1960's onwards etc)
Recent NBA History (90's onwards):
NBA Finals History:
All-Star Game History:
End Of Year Awards History:
Overall mark:

It's fairly straight forward. There's alot of categories, but I figured since other threads like this have been successful, this could be. Here's mine:

Your favourite team: 82/100
Other teams in the L: 70/100
Your favourite player: 100/100
Team statistics: 20/100
Individual player stats: 65/100
In-Depth stats: 15/100
Basketball Strategy: 75/100
NBA History: (1960's onwards etc) 45/100
Recent NBA History (90's onwards): 65/100
NBA Finals History: 40/100
All-Star Game History: 30/100
End Of Year Awards History: 60/100
Overall mark: 55/100

I guess to the general public I'd know alot about the NBA, but anywhere where people have a clue I'm usually out of my depth. If I get into an argument involving anyone except Andrew Bogut I generally lose quite quickly. This comes from years of no basketball on FTA, and Australia's general lack of care regarding the sport.

You'll find that the people who know the least will probably rate themselves the highest. It's a cousin of the "Lake Woebegone Effect."

I'm too lazy to copy and paste the template, so I'll just say that all of those are probably C+ except for my favourite team, which is probably a B+ at best. I started getting into looking at stats and stuff like that not too long ago, so I wasn't a hardcore fan of the NBA until recently.

Your favourite team: Chicago Bulls. 9/10- I try to watch all their games and normally read articles on them locally and nationally.

Other teams in the L: 6/10- I try to keep up with rest of the league but it's just too hard to be in the know for every single team

Your favourite player: Ben Gordon. 7/10. I'm still trying to figure out whether Gordon is a PG or SG in this league

Team statistics: 1/10. I don't pay that much attention to these. Only when they show team stats on the TV before a game/and at halftime am I looking at them.

Individual player stats: 7/10. I'm not sure have a I have a good knowledge of them but I try to keep an eye on them since I participate in fantasy basketball

In-Depth stats: If we're talking about team records against the spread, the over and under, on the road/away- 7/10. Something like PER, Rebound rates- 1/10.

Basketball Strategy: 4/10. It can be fun trying to guess which play a team will run and I'd like to think I have some kind of understanding of some offensive/defensive schemes but I don't. It's one thing to say "The Bulls need to get Gordon invovled and stop Player X" but coming up with an entire game plan is altogether different.

NBA History: (1960's onwards etc) 4/10. I normally don't post in those threads regarding the NBA before 80's. I prefer drawing most of my conclusions based on what I've seen.

Recent NBA History (90's onwards): 7/10

NBA Finals History: 3/10. I have a lot of the games on tape/DVD from the 80's and on but there's so much going on each game it's hard to remember details

All-Star Game History: 1/10. I could tell you Isiah cried when he won MVP, Scottie had his head shaved and wore red shoes when he won MVP, Shaq had a nasty dunk on D Robinson, and T-Mac threw a pass off the backboard to himself for a dunk. That's about it.

End Of Year Awards History:1/10. I'd have to consult some internet site unless it invovled a Chicago Bull winning an award

Overall mark: that's about an average of 4/10  keep that in mind the next time you have a discussion with me ;)

Your favourite team: 99/100 I'm basically a Pacers nerd, I realized I knew so much about the guys when I recognized John Edwards by the back of his head last season in the very highest point of the arena.
Other teams in the L: 85/100 I watch a lot of games on League Pass, so I can watch every single game that's played every day which gives me an advantage over people without league pass.
Your favourite player: 95/100 Well, I know a hell of a lot about Reggie Miller, but if we're talking about active player then I would say 90/100 for Stephen Jackson/Jermaine O'Neal.

For some reason I thought you'd end up giving yourself the highest overall mark. Also surprised by air gordon's mark, being a bit modest there I think

The fact that I'm in Australia... it limits how much you actually know about the NBA... even though I know a lot of the history of the league and of the teams and of Kobe and the Lakers... its hard to rate myself high since I don't get to watch them play!

Your favourite team: B+
Other teams in the L: C
Your favourite player: A-
Team statistics: E
Individual player stats: D (Only check out the points stats)
In-Depth stats: E-
Basketball Strategy: B (From playing basketball I guess... not from NBA)
NBA History: (1960's onwards etc) C- (Not in depth but I know who and when things thave happened... just the real big things though...)
Recent NBA History (90's onwards): C+ (Not too in depth but the general gist of things!)
NBA Finals History: C (More of recent history... like 80's onwards)
All-Star Game History: D+
End Of Year Awards History: C+
Overall mark: C/C-
