Isn't Magic Johnson supposed to have AIDS?

Postby EGarrett on Fri Jan 13, 2006 11:00 am

Magic Johnson is on TNT at the moment.

I know this is a morbid topic, but the man was diagnosed with HIV 14 years ago. People aren't supposed to survive nearly this long.

(PS: If this topic belongs in General then please slide it over. Thanks)

Traces of teh virus have disappeared from his blood a long time ago. When you have the best doctors and medicine, you certainly have higher chances of escaping.

And i do believe he was only a carrier of the disease, although I might be mistaken.

That was a story bigger than a mere sports story. But still, information only travels to the willing.

I believe he gets a blood transfusion regularly. As Kanye says "Magic Johnson's got a cure for AIDS".

To be fair, it hasn't been that publized in recent years, which may be because it no longer affects him.

He's still HIV positive. Not everyone who is HIV positive will develop full blown AIDS but a lot of people do. Most people wouldn't have the money to afford the treatments and access to the doctors that Magic Johnson has though. He's taken care of himself since day one on top of that.

yeah u got doctors that are like the best in the world, so certainly they can do more for you than for an average person.

he's in actually good shape, still plays in charity games and coaches.
kinda suprising

wasnt it mad people were scared of him cause he came back in 96 cause they were scared they'd catch aids from him

No, there are different strains of AIDS. I don't know what strain Magic has specifically, but one is much more fatal and fast acting than the other. I would assume he has the weaker strain bc if he had the stronger one, he would have been killed by it within a few years tops.

A few players expressed concerns, Karl Malone being one of the more vocal individuals.

Yea, just look at him, people with HIV/AIDS usually get thinner and thinner, but Magic is just getting fatter and fatter every time I see him.

LOL I was going to mention that, first thing I thought about. Thought you didn't like Kanye and his 'crack music nigguh'?
Roses is a pretty funny song, hope he does that when I'm going to see his show.
