Is that really true? Minneapolis is called the "City of Lakes". Minneapolis Lakers makes sense. I've never heard about the ship that sailed up and down the Mississippi River called the "Laker" and I live in Minneapolis.

acutally A.O. is right

Laker was the name of a type of cargo ship used on the Great Lakes and the Mississippi river.
The name was selected when the franchise was located in Minneapolis.
