Kobe Suspended 2 games

Postby *Los Angeles* on Sat Dec 31, 2005 7:21 am

NEW YORK, Dec. 30, 2005 – Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has been suspended for two games without pay for committing a Flagrant Foul Penalty Two by elbowing Memphis’ Mike Miller in the throat, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Senior Vice President Basketball Operations.
The incident, in which Bryant was called for a Flagrant Foul Penalty One and, subsequently, upgraded by the League Office to a Flagrant Foul Penalty Two, occurred with 8:24 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Lakers 100-99 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday night at the Staples Center.

Bryant will serve his suspension on Sunday, Jan. 1 when the Lakers host the Utah Jazz and on Tuesday, Jan. 3 versus Utah at the Delta Center.

Got that from NBA.com

I think it was wrong what Kobe did so i cant really complain about this. Hope Lamar can step it up to give the Lakers some wins with Bryant out.

I knew he was going to get suspended because alot of the Grizzlies fans wrote emails to the front office or whatever they did from the Grizzlies board because he should've got ejected from the game, but he didn't.

While I don't entirely disagree with the upgrading of flagrant fouls to type two and suspensions such as this one, I've always found them a little odd at the same time. After all, the call was made - good or bad - during the game. Once a game is finished, it's over with.

It reminds me of the Michael Jordan/Reggie Miller fight back in 1993. Reggie was ejected but MJ was allowed to play on, but was then suspended. Jordan himself later commented that they should either both been allowed to continue, both been ejected and if suspensions were handed out, they should both be forced to sit.

It doesn't matter that Kobe got hit. It was completely accidental. Kobe meanwhile has been throwing elbows for the past few games (hit Nowitzki right below the eye). Not to mention, Kobe made remarks to the press saying he would hit someone before looking at the consequences.

lol Grizzlies fans from a message board got him suspended

i guess Stern ignored all those emails/petitions for Artest to be reinstated last year

...

andrew- i think sometimes it's necessary for Russ Granik or whoever is in charge to dole out punishments after the fact the incidents happen. watching the action live sometimes the officials don't get to see the severity of some incidents.

ie- that fight which happened between the wizards and the bulls in the preseason game. only one player was ejected from the game. but afterwards they were able to see other players throwing punches, like Curry slugging Haywood in the nutsack

That's why I don't entirely disagree with it, especially in the event of a melee. But in some cases I think it undermines the authority/credibility of the referees albeit unintentionally.

In the Dallas game, he took a hard shot to the head from Howard.
In the Miami game, he took a hard shot from Wade.
In the Memphis game, he took an elbow to the head from Miller.

I guess it was his turn then

Are you sure you really watched the game? Miller elbow didn't even touch Kobe. Miller's hand swiped at Kobe's face when he was going up for a layup so it was really a scratch. Kobe is the one that through the elbow to the head. And air gordon, it was the fact that most of the people on the boards got involved because they knew that the game was badly officiated. There's a difference between what Artest did and what Kobe did. Kobe should've been ejected in the first place for intentionally throwing the elbow in Miller's face because you can't make contact above the shoulders with the elbow or its an automatic ejection so at least the Grizzlies board members had something argue about. Maybe the league was already going to suspend Kobe at first, but its nothing wrong with sending emails to the league office about what happened in that game especially with the way EJ got ejected from the game with one technical foul and he didn't even touch the referee.

I think a lot of what Bryant had to say about the elbow incident after the game had to do with the suspension... In a few words, he said that it was a player's right to defend the lane from driving opponents and easy lay ups by putting a hit on him, just to get a message across. I can't say I disagree much with this statement, as this is my kind of basketball, and the way I played the game back in highschool...

We're you even watching that game? He took the shot from Wade AFTER he made the initial hit.

the elbowing wasnt the 1st time this season bryant showed his nasty side

New York Post wrote: There is the smashing of lights and damaging of a TV monitor belonging to the Lakers' flagship station in front of the visitors locker room after Monday's setback in D.C. — and a near brawl with Lamar Odom that sent the above equipment flying.

A source revealed (and another confirmed) things got mighty testy between Kobe and Odom moments after Bryant committed a critical turnover with about five seconds remaining on the game clock. Immediately, Kobe pinned the blame on Lamar for supposedly botching a pick-and-roll designed to stalemate the game with a 3-pointer.

As the pair got closer to the Lakers' dressing room, Kobe became more uncouth and Odom, who squared off with the Heat's Gary Payton after Miami's Christmas Day win, answered in kind. That's when Kobe went after Odom. In doing so, he kicked over the lights and a chair holding the TV monitor. Kobe's security force of two quickly intervened and separated the pair.

In the locker room they again exchanged heated words and challenges. The tension was so intense one of the security guys accompanied Odom to the back of the charter bus and sat nearby on the trip to the airport while the other sat in the front with Kobe, the last member of the Lakers to board.

will this cause another feud?

Josh Howard almost took Kobe's head and Stern or whoever did nothing, Wade retaliated and throws and elbow at kobe and nothing from the league. Jesus christ.
Kobe's favorite player talks about Kobe
"I think he does what he has to do," San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili said. "Of course, there's a difference between 35 and 25 shots, but he's got that ability to make every shot. Even if it's in front of two guys he jumps so high on fadeaways it doesn't matter. He's got so many resources, it's easy for him to take 35 shots. If I was his teammate, I wouldn't care."

Excatly. I think suspending Kobe was probably the right thing to do, but where was Josh Howard's suspension on the clothesline a few days ago?
