Stan Van Gundy Resigns

MIAMI -- Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy is resigning today, citing personal family reasons.

A team official spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision hasn't been revealed publicly. The source told The Associated Press that Van Gundy's decision would be announced later this morning.

Van Gundy led the team to the best record in the Eastern Conference a season ago.

It's not clear who would replace him, but there are indications that former Heat coach Pat Riley could return to the sideline. Riley named Van Gundy as his successor a little more than two years ago.

The Heat are 11-10 this season. Shaquille O'Neal returned Sunday night in an OT win against the Wizards after missing 18 games with a sprained ankle.

Miami leads the Southeast Division by two games over Orlando and Washington.

It doesn't seem like a setup, I sincerely believe Van Gundy resigned for the sake of his family.

I think it could be a good change for the Heat, Stan made a great work with them, but there were some big problems, for example: Haslem was so much important, Zo played fewer minutes than he actually can, etc. But hey, we have to respect "his own" decision.

I want to beliee that but I don't. I believe Pat atched as long as he could and just didn't like what he saw. He knows Shaq is on the downside of his career and that their window is short with the group they have so he is stepping in right when Shaq is scheduled to return. Not wanting Stan to lose face(even though admitting to walking out on your team at this stage, when Shaq is returning isn't good either) in the public eye and also not take any heat himself for firing Stan, they agree to this family leave excuse thus killing the media frenzy that they'd get from a firing, though they may get some it won't be L. A. all over again, unless GP and they boys go news wire again, don;t forget GP was critical of Stan earlier in this early season too. Riley knows how to handle this business and trhe media by now so I understand but they should have done it before the season started, they panicking and for good reason, the Piston and Spurs look much better than they do. blessed

Yeah, I saw some similiarities, weird thing is I felt like I was writing for a magazine during the process of analyzing the whole thing. Stan says if he was getting fored out he would ahve gotten every penny but failed to mention that he was given a reduced role on the team, translation: demoted.

Whatever happens, I'm for the Spurs, LOL

If I was a coach and traveling all the time, and not being able to see my family, I would do the same after coaching a couple of years. I mean he has the money, now he's just stopping to spend quality time with his family. I mean family is more important than anything. I'd rather be poor and have family and friends, than be a rich-ass with no friends what so ever, or family.

I hope this is just a personal issue for Stan Van Gundy... I thought he was a good coach, esp after pulling the Heat to the playoffs 2 years ago when they started the season 0 and 7.
