Bang, did you read what I wrote? I said pretty soon (because of the way China is growing economicly) those 1 billion people will need more gas, electricity, ect. I never said they use more right now than Americans. My concern is that they soon will be using the same consumption rates as Americans and with 1 billion people in that country that would not be a very good scenario.

America has a higher reproduction rate right now mostly because we don't have the one child rule. Over the past decade or so China's population is starting to get under control. However, it's still 1 billion people and 1 billion people in one area is bad buisness. Disease is a big issue in China mostly because of how fast is spreads over there.

What's the difference between America's pollution and China's? America is making strides against pollution, because America has the money and the resources. China depends way too much on coal and switching over to more environmentally sound methods would take much more time.

But maybe I'm the only one who is concerned with 1 billion people living in one country that is growing rapidly. I mean, the demand for oil really isn't that big of a deal...right?

Not always necessarily true. For example, if every Chinese person went to buy a car, it'd be faster to walk than to drive. Like the one child per family rule, there will be limitations, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were limitations in using more gas, electricity, etc.

That could be true, but you can't deny that pretty soon that large population will be demanding more and more resources. What does that mean to the rest of the world?

I think the larger issue at stake here is, what can the US do to contribute to the world what it means to be a leader for the environment, and to set an example/standard for the rest of the world, especially China, to prevent past decision makings?

My point is, we don't want China heading into that direction, and great measures have to be taken so that these Chinese people can use resources in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner within the technological advances. Besides, they'll have to give a lot in order to use these resources they "need," so it's not that easy for them to suddenly reach that United States technology and advancements.

well not exactly cyanide, cars are becoming mad popular in the country almost everyone had some sort of car.. (though what they have there seems to be like a combo of motorcycle and car), and each family has like mad bikes and motorcycles, but in the city majority of people have cars and bikes.

Then that's a growing concern for the Chinese government and the rest of the world, then Let's hope they're doing something about it.

And I just don't think the Chinese government can do it effectively by themselves. I mean, what can they do? We know they need to start using other methods of energy because coal isn't very environmentally friendly. But what can they do about their country growing and their people starting to buy more and more cars and other things?

I have to agree that the large population of this world is a huge problem, but the way you said it just seemed wrong. China is trying to control its growth and the one child rule, although very flawed, is still a step. Overpopulation isn't only a Chinese problem anyway. It's a problem everywhere. In fact, India will surpass China's population at this rate. What's really sad is that most of those countries are developing countries. Whereas developed countries in rare cases even need more growth to sustain the economy. (japan is an example)

I think, in all honesty, there should be a law that states that you can only have a child if you can sustain the child financially. Yes, it seems wrong somewhat, but if there isn't such a rule, the same cycle of poverty will just repeat itself. I don't know how you could enforce such a rule either, but having such a rule would help.

u never know, we did a project in hs where we went to NYC, and asked random people on the streets where certain places like Japan, Australia, or even France is, and some people were like "whats japan" and, this one women said Poland was in the People's Republic of Nigera..

Then again, just like I don't know where most of the states are (I did draw a map once without looking and it was the most messed up map of the states ever.) I wonder if people do know where Tibet is. However, Tibet is still relatively in the public eye so I would assume people would know. It is true that I've heard worse...much worse.
