Doug Christie to retire

Postby Anthony15 on Fri Nov 25, 2005 12:54 pm

Dallas Morning News - League approval that will make Doug Christie an ex-Maverick is expected today.

Coach Avery Johnson said Thursday that all that remains between Christie's retirement because of his left ankle injury is for the NBA office, the Mavericks and Christie to complete paperwork. It will be a retirement because of injury, not a waiving.

"We should have some resolution (today)," Johnson said, adding that there was no scenario in which Christie would remain a Maverick.

Owner Mark Cuban was more cautious, saying that nothing is certain until the commissioner approves it. But Cuban said he was extremely pleased with the way Christie has handled the situation.

"He was completely open and honest," Cuban said. "Doug gave 110 percent in his attempt to come back. I have a ton of respect for the hard work he put in. He just couldn't do what he wanted to on the court and that frustrated him."

The Mavericks signed the 6-7 swingman as an insurance policy. Now that Marquis Daniels has proven he's healthy and resuming his on-the-rise career, the insurance no longer is needed.

When Christie's retirement is finalized, it may allow the Mavericks to collect insurance on part of the $3.15-million he is owed for this season.

The Mavericks also will start the wheels turning toward getting a replacement player.

Wow, i bet the Mavs are kicking themselves about releasing Finley :)

What do you mean? I'd take a developing youngster like Daniels over an old overpaid player anyday. Christie was just insurance, and he was probably signed to the minimum anyway.

Finley is very good but at this point in his career, he is not worth $37 million dollars for 1 season, which would have been his cost to Dallas.

Too bad about Christie, but his time was over. He was a good player and fun to watch.

He wasn't signed at the minimum, he got a 4 years, $3M/y, but it seems that the next 3 years are just team options (or maybe it's just Mark Cuban saying that cause he's too ashamed to tell the truth)

Christie got a 4 year 14.1 million deal according to hoopshype. And too bad for Cuban, there are no team options.

Rumors say that just the first year of the contract was guarateed. So, it's not so bad for the Mavs.

Christie didn't contribute on the first seven games, so they won't miss him. Moreover, they will add another swingman.

They really might as well have kept Finley. No matter how you look at it they're still paying his salary, it's just not a factor when it comes to the luxury tax. Considering what Mark Cuban will shell out money for, it was a pretty silly move then and it looks a lot worse now. Now they don't have a veteran replacement for Finley yet they're still paying him a hefty sum plus whatever's guaranteed on Christie's contract. Smooth.

I would have kept Finley given the fact that Stack is injury prone.

All Dallas needed was a big man, and Dampier obviously isn't the one. If Diop can anchor the middle with rebounds and blocks then watch out.
