NBA Warns The Kings About Baggy Shorts

12th November, 2005 - 10:12 am

Sacramento Bee - Stu Jackson visited Arco Arena on Friday night, with the NBA's senior vice president of basketball operations explaining he was in town for his annual visit.

That it came the same week the Arco overhead video showed images of Detroit looking like a battered and beaten city during Pistons introductions Tuesday was a coincidence, Jackson said. He said he hasn't viewed the video (and there is no update overall from the NBA on potential fines).

But Jackson did say the NBA has warned the Kings about players' shorts being a tad too long. Rules stipulate shorts must be at least be two inches above the knee.

"We try to work with the teams on this," Jackson said. "If they don't comply, we take action."

The Philadelphia 76ers , for example, were fined $5,000 for excess sag this week. Other teams also have been warned.

Good to know that the NBA, as always, has its priorities right.

I'm sure there's a Manute Bol photo out there that's equally disturbing.

That might be it. Though there's something to be said for this one too. Not to mention these:

What's the big deal with the NBA wanting its players to actually look like they're not thugs and hoodlums? They're a business, selling a product, namely the players and their services, and they are well within their rights to expect them to look reasonable. They're not asking them to wear Stockton shorts, here. Just asking them to keep it within reason. I don't understand why the masses reacted the way they did to the dress code, and now this as well.

Or am I missing it?

The NBA has a right to be image conscious, but when it comes to the shorts I don't think it's as big a deal. It's not like they're 3/4-style shorts. The dress code for players not in uniform is a bit different, though as I've said before I think it's a bit excessive when it comes to travelling.

2 inches above the knee isnt too bad. They are professional sportsman representing the NBA not AND1. Do you see baseball players wearing baggy pants? Do they complain about their pants being too tight? Not gangster enough? What about football (soccer)? they dont wear drooping shorts. There are plenty of hip hop fans on soccer teams you know. But they follow the rules and get on with it.

Everyone on an NBA team has a different personality and different tastes. You dont see the guys that are into heavy metal culture ripping up their shorts. No other trend gets catered to so why should hiphop? I am a hip hop fan myself and grew up on it, but i dont see the need to be 100% hiphop while at work?

Besides they get to wear their hair anyway they like, accesories galore, their choice of shoes too. Thats a helluv alot more flexability than most jobs.
``They play the game the way it's supposed to be played,'' Iverson said. ``It's not about athletics. That's the game the way Karl Malone and John Stockton play it. It's good for kids to see how the game is supposed to be played.''

I personally feel comfortable with shorts past my knees feels weird having my knees show, might be I relatively tall and it does look odd for a person to wear short shorts. I reckon it would be ok if allowed for players to wear shorts to the covering their knee caps without it looking hip hopish.

I wear shorts that get directly up to my knees , not under or above . I'm comfortable that way . I've seen some people ball with shirts up to their knees , shorts down to their ankles . That is insane , and I see no point in where long shorts , but if you like it then its up to you.
