Who's the best PG?

Sun Nov 13, 2005 2:12 pm

Try to forget that they won any awards. Try to forget that Nash won MVP in 2005. Try to forget that Jerry West and Magic Johnson are legends and in the hall of fame. Now, who do you think is the best point-guard? Im taling about a true point-guard... A pass first, then shoot PG.

I would've put Bob Cousy on there ahead of Jerry West. But out of those choices, it's between Magic and Stock. When it comes to all the unselfish point guards who can setup their teammates, have uncanny ball control and court vision and are also more than capable scorers when necessary, those two are the best. I'd personally pick Magic because he could do things above and beyond the general point guard duties and he enjoyed more success. Throw Cousy into the mix, I'll stick pick Magic but the Houdini of the Hardwood is still right up there with Magic and Stock.

Was West really a Point though? From what I've seen he was more of a smaller SG.

1. Magic Johnson
2. John Stockton
3. Isiah Thomas
4. Jason Kidd

Not sure if Big O should qualify into this or not since its "PG" related, but heck he's one of the best passers the league has seen. Kevin Johnson and Mark Jackson also deserve some loving. :hump:

Steve Nash is good but I would put him somewhere in the late teens to early twenties when it comes to pass first PG's not at number 1 and I wouldnt put the logo up there either.

Robertson and West's positions seem to be the subject of debate. A lot of people list Robertson as a shooting guard though I was always under the impression he was a point guard, a forerunner of Magic Johnson as the first really big guard (for his time, of course; a 6'5" guard wouldn't raise too many eyebrows these days). Likewise, I always thought West was a shooting guard, albeit one who served as a playmaker as much as he was a scorer.

I completely forgot about Isiah Thomas too, he's easily up there as well though not ahead of Magic.

Andrew, can you edit my poll and add 3 other PGs of your choice, I mean the top 3 poiny-guards of all-time cuz i dont know how to edit a poll.

Sun Nov 13, 2005 3:43 pm

I've added some more options, let me know if you want to change anything.

Sun Nov 13, 2005 4:33 pm

show some respect to stockton and add him :P

Sun Nov 13, 2005 5:02 pm

Stockton hands down.

Sun Nov 13, 2005 5:58 pm

Not having Stockton in the poll is a diss :x I'd take Magic Johnson. If he can play as many minutes as Stockton had in his career, Magic would take it all, hands down. Steve Nash in the poll is a joke, btw.

Sun Nov 13, 2005 6:20 pm

For some bizarre reason, I thought he was there which is why I mentioned him in my first post. I'll add him now.

Jason Kidd baby :headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang:

Hot Sauce

but jerry west is not a pt guard.

Mon Nov 14, 2005 5:00 am

Robertson was a sf all his days with the royals and when he came to the Bucks he was a sg.

Mon Nov 14, 2005 5:17 am

It's difficult to classify the greatest players in the NBA, the 1-5 system was made for the generic cases.

Big O shot mostly midrange shots with a variety of different moves (this was back when people actually had moves other than the jump shot). 10-12 footers. He would muscle people in, but he was obviously also a great playmaker and passer.

But from his style i'm not sure i'd call him a PG, unless you're also calling Chris Webber and Scottie Pippen point guards.

I've only ever seen him listed as a shooting guard or point guard; he's always referred to as one of the first "big guards", a tradition continued by Magic Johnson.

Magic Johnson. Heck, he is even a better center then 90% of the big guys in the league today.

Tue Nov 15, 2005 12:37 pm

Nash has had one nice season, but even with his MVP, putting him up there with these guys is insane. I wouldn't even put Nash over Kevin Johnson career wise, and even individual year wise, KJ had better seasons.

I'd have to go with either MJ or Stockton.

Tue Nov 15, 2005 1:02 pm

I take Magic for a couple reasons. A point guards job is to run the team and to run the offense, make passes and get assists. Obviously Magic did that with a career of 11 assists per game. However, when a pg can get those numbers and still score the basketball, that is an added plus, but you don't want your PG shooting a lot, numbers can be decieving with many point guards when you see numbers like 22 ppg, 10 apg. On the surface it looks like this player is just excellent, which is true, but the real telling stat about a scoring point guard is his field goal percentage. Magic's career field goal percentage was 52% and he had seasons of shooting 55,56,57 percent from the floor. That is absolutley astounding. Stock scored the ball effectively too, without a doubt, his field goal percentage is almost as good for his career, but when you look at how many points he scored, its nowhere near the level of Magic's. Stock had a career of 13 points per, while Magic scored 20 per.

Magic Johnson, hands down. (Y)

Magic Johnson for obvious reasons, but I think John Stockton needs some more recognition (Jose Calderon = next Stockton baby!)

I know he isn't anywhere near the best, but how about Mark Jackson? I think he's a pretty underrated point guard, and he's second in the NBA in career assists or something like that.
