Garnett donating over $1 mill to victims

Postby Riot on Sat Nov 12, 2005 3:03 pm

AP - Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Kevin Garnett is joining the long list of professional athletes who are donating to victims of Hurricane Katrina -- in a big, big way.

Garnett is donating $1.2 million to build homes throughout the Gulf Coast region.

"I knew I wanted to do something," Garnett said after practice Friday. "But I didn't know in detail what I wanted to do."

Garnett is teaming with Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network charity foundation on the project. Garnett said he chose Winfrey's foundation because 100 percent of his donation will go toward the victims.

"The fact that she pays the overhead of her employees and the foundation itself and just goes out and makes dreams come true ... I think it makes it more beneficial," Garnett said. "It's a good thing."

$1.2 million to be exact. Great gesture by Garnett and one of the many reasons why I consider him one of the nicest players in the league, let alone one of the best.

Hey I don't really know much about Oprah but I saw the episode where Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley were on it and when she bought and renovated a house for a family of 14

What's so bad bout her ?

It's still a lot of money. If all celebreties gave away a million bucks each to a specific cause.. that would be great.

At least he's giving it for a good cause, I mean donating 1+ million is alot of cash no matter how much you maybe earning. At least he isnt using it on drugs, hookers or cars. :!:

As for teaming up with Oprah, well she's an annoying feminist but you gotta feel for her after the things she's been through. After seeing this I was reminded how Michael Schumacher gave $10 million for the Asian Tsunami victims, thats out of this world generosity I mean he isnt even Asian yet he did that no wonder he's had so much of success with so many championship and now they had to make 101 rule changes just so Formula 1 isnt known as Formula Schumacher. :lame:

Garnett is nice , but to be honest , he's scary to me aswell. Well , on the basketball court he play's with such passion I think he would punch me if i hacked him . But out of the court he looks like a nice guy.

He punches his teammates off the court too Doobie so I don't know if you can really drop your guard either way

It's a great move from him, and I'm glad he didn't go on TV crying months before he actually donated it. Still pissed that he teamed up with Oprah though.

1.2 million is chump change for Garnett, but it's a large sum that most NBA players never donate.

Good for him, even if it's only 1/20 of his contract, 1.2 million is quite a bit of money to donate.
