New Editing Tool Available

This is a new editing tool that I came up with for anyone who might not have Microsoft Access. It's non-Access dependent and written using the latest Microsoft .NET technologies.

Please take a look at the screenshot and use the tool and let me know if it's helpful.

It's only partially completed; I have all the team access info in there right now. If there's a demand, I'll add players, coaches, and even schedule editors later. Take a look at the screenshot and let me know.

NOTE: To keep the installation small, I set it up for some required components like Microsoft .NET files, to be downloaded via the Internet on install. I figured some may have this already and if they'd have to download it anyway why not get it from the source, meanwhile it would make the download smaller for those who already have it.

Nope, you don't need Access. The only thing is that it requires some files to run .NET applications, but the setup will download these free from Microsoft. (I could have included them in the setup file, but you'd have to download it anyway, and it kept the download small). If you are running Windows XP, you may have these files already, as Microsoft includes them as part of Windows XP.

.NET has some slightly high memory requirements, but if your system can run NBA Live, it can run this

Just an update.... The player module has been quite a task with all the different attributes, but is almost finished. Since this is beta, I may just include the essential attributes and leave more detailed stuff for later releases.

I also had to remove the file from my website, for those trying to download. I really do appreciate all who have downloaded and tried it out, but man, is it killing my bandwidth quota! (I only have a certain limit of GB that can be uploaded and downloaded each month, and I'm happy to say that due to the popularity of this tool, I've almost maxed out my bandwith so I had to remove the file from my server before my ISP cancels my account )

Anyways, I'm trying to get the file hosting problem ironed out, and hopefully I'll be able to get it up on FilePlanet or some other site by the time it's finished.

Does anyone know the 411 on sites like FilePlanet and Angelfire? How do you host files on FilePlanet?? Do you have to pay to upload? What does a FilePlanet subscription give you? Do you have a certain quota?

I'll try that. Actually I had been using my business's website to host the files since I have plenty of disk space available.

What happened today is that, to make a long story short, the software that keeps track of website traffic is malfunctioning, so I was accidentally sent an email saying I was over my traffic limit. Apparently my quota is fine after all. I thought that was strange since just hosting a few files shouldn't put me over 3GB.

Nevertheless I'm looking at Lycos, Angelfire, and FilePlanet. All I need is a place to physically host the files.

I use FilePlanet (as per GameSpy/SportPlanet's hosting rules), so I'm familiar with it. I'm pretty sure it's free to use, even for people who do not run hosted sites, though you have to pay for the premium download service. It's not a popular means of sharing files because even the public servers require (free) registration. There's no monthly/weekly/daily limits on downloads, but the public servers do become full, so during the busy times users will be queued to download the file.

First of all, sorry for the late reply, missed this thread.

I'm not exactly sure of the procedure for people who aren't part of hosted sites. I get to use a different FTP upload area reserved for hosted sites, so I've never had to use the public upload area. You probably need to sign up for an account, but it will be free.

Sorry for the delay, people. The file will be back up when the next version is completed, which will probably be sometime tomorrow. When it's back up, I'll post in this thread to let y'all know.

The new version is finally up at my website. I've also submitted it to FilePlanet and it will be up in the downloads section when they have it up there.

Sorry it took so long, but the player ratings were more work than I thought.

Other improvements (besides adding player support):

Fixed bug where some team ratings weren't updated.
Improved error handling for team and player ratings.
Interface was streamlined a bit.

Please note also that although I improved the bug checking, I can only do so much and have the program out in a reasonable time.
So basically don't put 1" for a player height, 500 lbs, and a jersey number of "E.7" and complain to me when the game crashes

So this new version has the player features and is a bit more crashproof as well as fixes some bugs.

While I'm figuring out where to eventually host the files, I have put them back up on my website. I've also submitted them to FilePlanet and I'll be using that as a source when FilePlanet adds the file.

Next: Coaches, Team Gear and possibly Schedules.

BTW if you're feeling lazy don't worry about teamgear.dbf... my JI works pretty well as a teamgear.dbf editor and will hopefully be even better in newer versions...

Thanks, and sorry for the download time. Unfortunately Microsoft .NET, while being a kickass development tool, is a huge disk space hog. But once you have the first version installed, or if you have Microsoft Office, you can use the "lite" download.

The upside is that development is much shorter with VB.NET than if I were using Visual Basic 6.0 because of a lot of new features. It was really meant for enterprise-level development. The download WOULD be 47MB if I included the .NET framework, but instead I set the install package to automatically download the installation for the framework (after checking to see if it's needed), just in case people have it already.

NP Kidd4MVP... I was just wondering which .NET language you use, VB or C#, and my question has been answered. I personally like C++, because it is separate from .NET and I only recently installed VS.NET and am not used to the new languages.

Do you work for a company that builds programs, and this is what you do in your spare time? Or is this just a hobby? I hope to work for a software development company someday.

Actually, I'm a freelance programmer and this is basically what I do. One thing you'll find out if you work for a software development company there's no such thing as spare time. I'm independent right now, kind of looking for projects and/or employment in the field.
