Richardson Says Dress Code Targets Black Players
20th October, 2005 - 2:37 am
ESPN.com
- Jason Richardson wants to keep wearing his chains, and the Golden State Warriors guard believes the NBA's new dress code takes aim at black players in the league.

He is calling for the players' association to fight the new wardrobe rules announced this week that will go into effect when the season kicks off next month.

"They want to sway away from the hip-hop generation," Richardson said Wednesday night before the Warriors played the Phoenix Suns in a preseason game. "You think of hip-hop right now and think of things that happen like gangs having shootouts in front of radio stations.

"One thing to me that was kind of racist was you can't wear chains outside your clothing. I don't understand what that has to do with being business approachable. ... You wear a suit, you still could be a crook. You see all what happened with Enron and Martha Stewart. Just because you dress a certain way doesn't mean you're that way. Hey, a guy could come in with baggy jeans, a 'do rag and have a Ph.D. and a person who comes in with a suit could be a three-time felon."

Well he's right, the dress code is stupid IMO. They know the majority of the players that dress that way are African American, and as long as the player is neat (no dirty shoes, no holes in the shirt) and things like that, then they shouldn't have a problem with the way they dress. It's not like they have their pants way below their ass like other people are on the streets.

if anyone watched leno last night, charles barkley gave a perfect explanation as to why the dress code is a great idea. the jist of what he said is that a lot of black kids look up to nba players and in doing so, they end up dressing like them. the problem is when they end up dressing like them, with the baggy shirts, pants, doorags, and bling they're denying themselves the opportunity to get jobs. it's just how society is, if you walk into a place like staples hoping to get a job there you're not gonna get it by dressing like that. having a dress code eliminates (albeit partially) the problem.

i don't think they're going too far, it's pretty reasonable. lets not forget that NBA players are employees of the NBA -- would you show up to work wearing a big piece of jewelry hanging around your neck, or shirts that go down right where your knees are? come on, these guys get paid a shitload of money yet they can't comply with a simple dress code regulation? give me a break. stern is just asking them to change their attire if they're in an NBA-ish environment, not in a club or whatsoever. god, these guys make it seem like they're getting stripped of their fucking manhood. man up.

Well said (y) Props to Barkley too.

Besides, the rules say that the players can wear chains, except it can't be over their clothes. They're bitching about little things like bling bling just so they can get that ghetto look and use the racist card as a valid excuse?

The sad thing is that some of these players in question have college educations.

What's the point of wearing bling-blings if you're not going to bling it? :D
The players want everyone to see their blings yo!

That;s ridiculous.. a dress code was implemented to make the players look more professional. Some of these players just dont understand.. that playing in the NBA is their JOB. J... O... fucking B. It's what they do to put the food on teh table.. if your boss says wear a suit you sure as hell should be wearing a suit.
Preparation will only take you so far. After that you've got to take a few leaps of faith.

Its gonna be interesting come ASW especially with the dunk contest when the players on the sideline go nuts when a player pulls off a nice dunk. Good example is when J-Rich's winner in 03.

Agree too with Sir Charles

Knowing david stern, I bet they r gonna have a problem when they start wearing those overly flashy suits (like some hot pink ghetto fab outfits) and start designating the colors they wear. next thing you hear that players have to wear a special nba designed suit when sitting on the bench. then they will all look like Mr Stern's puppets..

better yet, he should implement the dress code for fans. now that would be funny.

They should be dressed like professional athletes, not rappers.

Im not worried about the dresscode, but I rather see the players in suit then jerseys which are 3 sizes to big for them.

That won't be funny. That would be horrible for the league financially.

i guess i'm for the dress code but only because of what barkley said. but....

i'm not buying this look professional argument.

in any other workplace where you have to wear a uniform for your work, you don't have to be wearing a suit before or after work

do mechanics, doctors, chefs, etc come into work "looking professional" before they change into their work apparel? nope so neither should nba players

nba players are employees, yes, but they are "on company time" the minute they are on the floor, not the time when they arrive to the lockeroom or leave for home
