Gary Payton To Sign With Miami

21st September, 2005 - 11:33 pm
Miami Herald - According to Payton's agent Aaron Goodwin, 15-year veteran point guard will sign a one-year contract with the Miami Heat , which were looking to fill a void at the backup PG position.

Payton flew into Miami late Wednesday and will take a physical and sign the minimum $1.1 million deal Thursday. The Heat are yet to use a portion of their Mid-Level Exception.

For the second time in his career, Payton will join a Shaquille O'Neal-led team in hopes of winning his first title.

Think the Heat can win a championship?

The Heat rosters are overloaded with talents. That will be interesting, Who will start at PG? Payton or J-Will? Well, Payton will help the Heat in the defensive ends and that fact that he can score some points when Wade is in foul trouble or injured. Overall, not a bad move by the Heat. Championships? They have the chance but I still need to see how their chemistry works.

Ha. Already signed, and you didn't know. Funny to me.

Anyways...

I suppose it could help them. More egos. Maybe too many? Who knows at this point.

Taking the dallas mavericks of the last 5 years along with the lakers of 2 years ago, it has been seen over and over again that more talant does not mean more wins. more talant means more players from different teams developing their talants and becoming the go-to guys of their team, ala Antoine, shaq, wade of the heat...Ala nash, novitski, etc of the mavericks, ala shaq, payton, bryant, malone of the lakers. When you have all these "all stars" meshed onto the same team, it's going to be expected to cause chemistry problems (especially when a person like walker is in the picture). All these players are all used to having a set role on a prior team, and that set role usually involves having the ball a lot of having a lot of minutes on the court. When you had the lakers of 2 years ago with 4 hall of famers on the same team, you saw hatred, disatasfaction, and eventual failure. You may say that getting to the Finals is successful, but I see a loss as a loss. Payton was upset about the offensive sets and his lack of touches, bryant and shaq had there problems, and Malone tried to keep things patched up.

When you look at a dynasty team, you think of the Bird era celtics, or the jordan era bulls. they had 1, 2 players tops that had extreme talant. jordan and pippen. Bird and McHale/Parish. the rest were role players. Rodman a role player at rebounding. Kerr a role player at passing.

This is why the supersonics were so successful last season dispite having so many people going into free- agency. They had 2 star players in allan and lewis, and then they had role players. They had Radmonovic to spread the court and bring PF's into out of the key. They had forson to bang and rebound, they had ridnour to drive and pass, etc., etc.

On a side note, this is why i believe the kings have not gone anywhere either. They had so much talant in bibby, miller, webber, and peja, that when split up, all 4 of those players could be now or in the near future leaders of serparate teams.

Moral of the story. 2 stars, rest role players will win a ring. Any more nad you got yourself inside competition for stardom.

I think he didn't mean Miami's J-Will, but Jay Williams, the free agent. I expect him to go to Houston too.

Payton isnt playing there for major minutes, he just wants the bling bling, thats all.

I don't think his ego will get in the way, I'd be more concerned about Antoine now he has "free range" to shoot threes all game.

Personally this "team stacking" thats been happening the past couple years bugs me, but it hasnt proven successful yet, lets hope it stays that way!

nope I dont think so since he has to play major role because wade is not that pure point guard and J-Will is theyre only legitimate point guard. He will bring the "D" in Miami plus his experience come playoff time. This guy needs a break after Seattle his career slowly being slipped away but how can we forget what he did last season with Boston although his on the verge of retirement,The Glove can yes still play decent and all star type moves.Shaq would be that happy if they really sign him.

i honestly thinnk miami will have a lot of teamwork issues, not because of payton, but because of Walker and JWill. Payton is a good pickup but i think this is gonna be a repeat of the Lakers 2 year back. Well at least the Heat will be fun to play on Live 06....

Good move, he can give outside stopper tips to flash and maybe help out 'toine on something since they were teammates at boston.

First will come a couple of people not being happy with their minutes, then they will get angry, then they will ask for trades(maybe), then will come the "I deserve it more than him" or "Ive been workin harder than him" or whatever they wanna say.

Then the team will start to fall apart...

My prediction

Payton is too old to defend faster and younger PGs. Ask Chauncey Billups.
HE'S USING HYPNOSIS!

Well, it does increase the expectations that Miami will win a championship, but like beauduvall said, it doesn't guarantee it. Who would've thought Shaquille O'Neal would attract so many free agents.
