if he does, hes taking Skips minutes, which sucks....

Well, it's always good to have a compeitive three guard rotation because of this. Alston will probably feel a lot more pressure to perform more consistently than he usually has been because Jay Williams and Calderon will always be on his heels. It'll either make him a better player or he'll crack down, but Alston isn't the type of player to back down like that when the security of his starting spot is in jeopardy. I honestly don't think Alston has had any off-court issues with Mitchell, they both seem like competitive individuals who would break a leg for a win anyway.

Also IF Jay Williams becomes a raptor, he will get some decent minutes too. Either Calderon can backup at the SG position being a small guard and jay williams to backup Alston. I can see it work.

He already said he doesn't want to go to Raps. He said situation is better than money. Case closed.

He worked out for the rockets now.

The sun has set on the Raptors plans to sign a point guard from the Land of the Rising Sun.

GM Rob Babcock had expressed interest in inviting Japanese point guard Yuta Tabuse to training camp, which begins Oct.4 at Brock University in St. Catharines.

The Raptors felt that the quick Tabuse, the first Japanese-born player to play in the NBA, had a chance of becoming the club's third string point guard, behind Rafer Alston and Jose Calderon.

However, the Raps will have to look elsewhere for their third-string point guard needs.

"I talked to Tabuse's representative and it seems he's already committed to the L.A. Clippers," Babcock said yesterday.

However, former Duke University star Jay Williams is still in the picture.

The Raps have offered Williams a non-guaranteed contract for about $640,000, which is close to their salary cap limit.

Williams has been travelling to various NBA cities the past week, working out for teams such as the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and the Raptors.

Despite the fact that he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 2003, which resulted in a fractured pelvis and torn knee ligaments, Babcock was impressed with the 2002 U.S. college player of the year.

Williams averaged 9.5 points and 4.7 assists for the Chicago Bulls as a rookie.

Got it off gamefaqs.

Gordon, I'm not much of a Bulls fan, so could you tell whether or not Williams is a good shooter or has shown any signs of knocking shots down? I know he relied a lot on his quickness and altheticism, but did he have at least a respectable shot?

He could hit the open shot but by no means was he a shooter, before the accident he was a scoring playmaker with like consistant 20ft range.

great...another year of missing the playoffs for us probably, you know your team is in bad shape when you have someone like calderon as a backup. i know i havent seen him play, but i wish we had someone more certain of better skill playing backup point. Lets hope that Roko Ukic develops his game even more in europe and come back to the raptors a few years down the road and become our starting point :) (personally, i wish he would become the next manu ginobilli, but of course that aint gonna happen)

What the hell? You expected us to make the playoffs? Anyone with a decent basketball I.Q. about the Raptors knows we're in the process of rebuilding.

That's just pure ignorance then. You've never even seen him play yet you don't even think he's that good. Calderon is one of the top European point guards in the league, and he's a pretty well-rounded player as well. I for one, think he'll do a great job as a backup.

Yeah, great analysis there. Email Chad Ford and ask for his old job.

i guess you could say that. lol i don't know. he was a beast in college, especially from 3. then when he got on a nba court, he seemed a lot smaller & just as quick as everyone else

A man can have some hope right (i was hoping for the ever-so-slim chance of being 8th in the east)... , i was hoping ukic would sign with us. and my apologies for already doubting this guy, i just hope he does a better job than palacio at backup point.

Whatever happened to cook? the 4th or 5th stringer for PG

And what's with babcock's obsession with signing rather unknown oversees players? Is he not confident enough with the NCAA players here in north america? If he thinks that he can land a Yao Ming by scouting oversees, then he's sorely mistaken. I liked Glenn Grunwald better, since he actually picks good people (he got carter I believe)

wasnt he signed to only a 10 day contract? If he did, then i think the raptors didnt offer him another contract and currently hes an unrestricted free agent.

He is a free agent. Raptors signed him for the remainder of the season last year. He was 3rd string actually and didnt do too bad at the end of the season.

Do you know your basketball ? Most of the European aren't too bad in this league. Also Jose Calderon was well known in the Euro Basketball community. He is choosing to sign this guy because he has more experience and maturity that most of the NCAA guys.

It was a little joke, you don't take things lightly do you? I'm sure they are very good and mature, but I do admit, I don't follow other basketball leagues, as well I live in Canada, and it would be rather difficult to get game coverage of semi finals between Istanbul vs Spain here
