First, there's the matter of physical talent. Kobe doesn't jump quite as high as Mike used to (About a 38" vert compared to Mike's 42") and Kobe has shorter arms.

Since when anyone need to jump higher than others to be considered better than those?, I don't think Olajuwon's jump was that high and that doesn't make him worse than C. Barkley who maybe had a higher jump.

You don't need to jump higher than anyone or have longer arms to be considered better than others.

Also...the three-point shot can be both a blessing and a curse. For evidence...compare Vince Carter before and after he learned an outside jump shot.

3pt & outside shooting is always a blessing, why? cause is something every SG should show they're capable of. If Vince is shooting from outside is to shut the mouth to those that were saying that he had no shooting ability and it might be better so he doesn't have to get injured again.

After Vince learned to hit the three-point shot he actually became less effective as a scorer.

Is Vince's shooting percentage bad? No. I don't think the 3s are the reason for him not to be that great scorer, look at his injuries, maybe that will explain those to you.

Finally...there's the matter of mentality...being a dominating scorer alone doesn't make you great. Jordan didn't reach his peak...and couldn't beat the Pistons...until he learned to pass the ball. Kobe hasn't established that mentality yet as he's had Shaq drawing the attention and doing the passing for him. That might stunt his growth in that department.

You have to remember that Kobe didn't go to college like Jordan did. Plus, if you think Jordan's IQ is just few points over Kobe, I give the merits to Kobe since he didn't go to college and is almost as good in general subjects as others that spent 4 years there.

In 95-96 he made 42% of his threes, 111-260.

I don't see why Kobe shouldn't have done it. If Jordan was in his prime and playing against say Magic Johnson for the last time..do you think he would have intentionally played worse so that Magic looks better??..I don't think so. It all comes down to competition and respect. They both respect each other already so why give Jordan sympathy points? He's not a crippled old man that can't play.
In my opinion, Jordan respects Kobe more for showing him what he's capable of rather than just not competing to his highest ability. If the other guys can't keep up with Kobe too bad. I'm a Michael Jordan fan, but I don't think Kobe should have let MJ have his way against the Lakers. I'm sure given MJ's well-documented love of competition, he wouldn't want that either. There's no need to make the game easier for MJ just because he is retiring - that would be disrespectful.

Just to comment on the other loose ends - Vince giving up his spot was noble, commendable, but not necessary. It's not unprecedented - Doug Collins gave up his spot for John Havlicek during Hondo's final year - and was basically just a footnote, another item for trivia. It was still KG's night. Similarly, KG earned the trophy.

I'd just like to add (and this is not moderating, simply a personal observation) that not all Michael Jordan fans are ignorant of the rest of the NBA and its history, or feel that every award should be handed to Michael Jordan. Some people do get a little too fanatical about their favourite athletes - but we're not all like that.

He was on fire the entire 1st half, and everyone knows if someone is on fire he should get the ball. And about the Sonics, yes he had a bad game but I guess other superstars and mvp´s never had a bad game.

If I'm playing a game of basketball...and one of my teammates is lighting it up...I pass him the ball because I want to win. Oh, as for an MVP bid...it helps him, but Kobe still isn't the most valuable player on the Lakers, so he can't be the MVP of the league. That's KG or Tim Duncan. Kobe's had a great season, and I can see him winning it next year when he's the primary option over Shaq (if he isn't, I'll be surprised), and he's got many more years to win many more MVPs. He'll get his time....this year it should go to the guys who have done more with less....but Garnett's letting that slip through his fingers along with home court advantage...
