Chelsea buys midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips from Manchester City

posted July 17 @ 12:43, EST

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea acquired the rights to Manchester City midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips on Sunday, paying his old club a reported 21-million-pounds ($45 million Cdn) transfer fee.

Wright-Phillips still must agree on a contract with the defending Premier League champions.

"As a result of Shaun's request to speak to Chelsea we have conducted a series of complex negotiations with Chelsea," Manchester City spokesman Paul Tyrrell said. "The fee for Shaun's transfer has been agreed and consequently we have granted his wish to talk to the other club."

Wright-Phillips is the stepson of former Arsenal striker Ian Wright. He joined Manchester City in 1999 after being released as a trainee from Nottingham Forest.

He has made four appearances for England's national team.

He's a brilliant player, I love watching him play... pretty much everytime he touches the ball something's going to happen. Chelsea don't need him whatsoever, but awell I guess it's just something to get used to.

they didn't need Del Horno either, but picked him up nonetheless... Stamford Brisge will resembe a marine boot camp in practices with so many players vying for the same position... :?

I can understand the Del Horno purchase, Bridge hasn't panned out as well as they'd like and Gallas was playing out of position there. They really need to do something about their strikers, they buy these star strikers who then don't actually score any goals. I think Crespo will go alright now that he's back there, if they play him.

This sucks, Wright-Philips had been playing for City for about as long as I can remember, I like when players stay loyal to their team for their whole career. UNLESS they've outgrown their club and are sold to a team that can actually use them.
At some point in my life I followed Man City pretty close, primarily for Wanchope, me and a couple mates decided to become fans of the Costa Rican national team on one day. :)

My guess is he'll be sold soon enough... :|

I though Bridge was doing a good job there. And they don't really need an attacking full back with Robben roaming the left wing at will... :?

Bridge was good in spurts, but not consistantly good. Chelsea play a 4-3-2-1 with two wide men behind the lone striker, so having fullbacks roaming forward isn't necessarily too bad because Duff/Robben are pushed further forward by default anyways.

I'm guessing that they feel like they can bank on having an ultra attacking team when you've got Makelele in the midfield, John Terry defending and Cech in goal... I also read somewhere that they want to have 2 top quality players for every position, which would explain Bridge/Del Horno.

Ahhh, reminds me of my old failed tactic-making days in the CM series... (Y)

2 quality players at every position. God, I hate Chelsea. Bring back Tottenham Hotspurs dominance. "Back" is a surplus word, I agree.

Robbie Keane and Jermaine DeFoe up front. And good ol' Ledley at the back. Quality!!!

I know :( As a Manchester United fan I would much prefer to see him come here, Chelski already have a huge amount of central midfielders.
