Religons

Postby Username123 on Thu Jul 14, 2005 10:42 am

We here at NLSC talk about everything but religion. Religion is a very important part in many peoples lives, like mine but i rarely follow my religion. I think most of the people here are Christians but there must be a few Jewish and Muslims. Anyway lets talk about religion i am very interested to know about Christianity, Islam and Jewish-ism.

It would be pretty nice if anyone from any of those religions just give me some knowledge about them because I am very interested in it. Also people give their opinions/thoughts about other religons so we can fix up the bad view they have taken upon a religion.

So lets just discuss about religions. I just want to learn more about different religions so i can update my knowledge, and please people don't flame.

I don't really believe in a religion, but I do believe in a God.

I do not agree with organized religion, although the idea of having an omnipotent being taking care of you is a very strong support for the people who need it.

I was brought up Jewish (btw, wisdom, it JUDAISM) but at the age of 10 I started doubting, and from that age on I have considered myself an agnostic.

I completely respect religious beliefs, but as Karl put it, it is "the opiate of the masses".

I'm more of a nihilist myself... we accept nothing as true, only as conceptions of our minds. Truth is not out there, we create it ourselves. Without sentient beings to look and wonder at the universe, there would be no universe. If a tree falls in the forrest...

Probably the reason why there have been few discussions on religion is because it can really open up a hornets nest.. dare I say that many people are even more passionate about religion than they are about basketball (although I can't personally understand that)..

I'm an athiest. I'd be an agnostic but I really see no purpose in supposing that there is a god when either way I'd view any potential god as having no relevance to human existence in terms of governing life, justice, and the afterlife.

I'm all in favour of religious diversity, even though I know religious doctrine/ideology has and is being used to do heanous things to our fellow humans (on all sides of the fence) and to a certain extent is holding back the social evolution of mankind by creating unnecessary division. The reason I've come to accept religion, despite strong opposition in the past, is that I'm abundantly aware that I'm powerless to change to state of religious belief in the world and people are entitled to their own beliefs, so the only form of empowerment on the subject I can hope for is to accept it and not allow it to bother me. I've always liked to think of myself as being on the side of reason, so along those lines I could stand to be corrected at any time.

I was raised a Roman Catholic, and I would not consider myself one, since I find too much conflict with the traditional conservative model and modern/post-modernism philosophy, but I don't go too far into the atheist or agnostic model, since I do believe in God. Not the same kind of God though, not a God that intervenes, that lives somewhere in heaven, and has a white beard. A God that is a presence all around us, the "life" and "love," the higher things we can't explain, is the kind of God I believe in. I also believe in Jesus, not as a God, but as a person that sets a standard for all of us. His wisdom and compassion is incredible, and I admire him as a historical figure.

I don't get it some people said that they don't believe in religion but they do believe in a god. How is that possible, without religion how would you know what god is. So did those people make up a god? Believing in religion leads to believing in God.

they just believe in God but they dont have a legion with Him..so that makes them no religion...actually that is why it is called religion because our former ties with God was broken after adam and eve sinned, and we followed sinning, then Jesus came and taught us how to have it back.....atleast in a christianity point of view of religion

There's a difference between organized religion and personal faith. Organized religion is like following a strict code or set of common beliefs that a community shares. When one starts to disagree with something in a religion, the person is bound to disbelieve that religion is the "one true religion" or "the religion must be believed 100%" Instead of turning away from the religion completely, I look what makes the religion so appealing other than the control and parent-child relationships and other negative intangibles. If I find "truth" in something and trust it with intuition and experience, it shapes what I percieve to be "truth" and all the beliefs that makes sense in my life and life in general makes up my personal faith.

Religion is too strict, too restrictive, I don't believe religion should exist. I think everyone should believe in something that works for them without being forced to choose a specific dogma.

We had like a 20 page thread not so long ago.

Solipsism comes from the Latin "solus" and "ipse". It is literally "just oneself" and is a belief that your own self is the only thing that can be proven to exist, due to the fact one thinks.

We have been studying a LOT of Descartes, that's why I know this. :P

Religion unfortunately brings much prejudice as of yet in this world, Im not sure why people cant mind their own business and just get along instead of burning each other cause their God looks different cause what they gotta understand is no matter what God may look like on the outside for someone that hes pretty much preaching the same thing.

I believe RC and Christianity is a bit too old skool and that going by a book is quite silly(Im a RC by birth) and thats why many people are turning towards a simple more scientific based religion like Buddhism or bending the rules to create their own sorta relgion. Even Hinduism and Islam is too strict and conservative although I have nothing against the people that choose to follow it by the book I can see why many people from the west arent very religious as in our case theirs forgive and forget or the ability to commit a sin and then get forgiveness whereas Buddhism its all about you and the way you live life and theirs no such thing as forgiveness or any chance your gonna get a helping hand from this special person up in the sky.

Anyway thats my basic view, I dont mind anyone being against God or with him as long as they dont hate people due to differences. I mean Muslims are all getting labelled as terrorists by the western world these days and its shameful, one of my good friends derives from Saudi Arabia and after 9/11 his home was broken into and his father was severely beaten and he had to go through an year of bullying by the rednecks that unfortunately prowl our streets.

Ok I think I better stop there, Im becoming very preachy.

Oh, wow a thread about religion. Neato.

Anyhow, I often find myself in a strange place between Solipsism, agnostisism and a flat out mentality of "fuck it all". So let's name that train of thought The Ways of The Wanker, and take it from there.

I believe that I as a individual is the sole reason for being, and the only observer that can be taken for granted, yet I think that we might have a nature to "draw" energy from. But not in the hispy Wiccan way, but in the way that makes you able to do more, feel more empowered and such just through experiences. And then I turn around and realize that there are people that believe in demons and angels out there; then I loose hope and just regress into the fuck-it-all-mode.

Believe in The Ways of The Wanker, embrace The Ways of The Wanker, be The Ways of The Wanker*. Hey, if Hubbard can dream up a religion**, why can't I? You don't have to be a washed up sci-fi writer to do it - right?

*might consider renaming it though
** evolved from clams?! Seriously, that guy was a big comedian and Tom Cruise a moron
