THE MYTH
Yinka Dare, a 7-1 center, is an awesome physical specimen who came into the NBA with only three years of organized basketball under his belt. This great man was also a playground legend in Ruckers park. He made 82 appearances and 82 starts in his second season with the Nets, that led to an all-star appearence. A native of Nigeria, he spent two years at George Washington University before declaring himself eligible for the NBA Draft, many people with knowlegde of basketball thought that Yinka was gonna come out his freshman season. Named Freshman of the Year by Sports Illustrated for 1992-93, he followed that up as a sophomore by pacing the nation in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, and field-goal percentage. After two seasons he left college ranked No. 1 on George Washington's all-time points, rebounds, assist, steal, blocks, field goal percent, three point percent and free throw percent. Banking on the future, the New Jersey Nets selected Dare with the 14th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. It was a surprize because many thought that he was going to be the first overall pick. ENGLEWOOD, United States (AFP) - Nigeria's Yinka Dare, a former
first-round draft pick of the New Jersey Nets, died after collapsing at
his New Jersey home. He was 32.

A medical examiner determined that Dare died of a heart attack on
Friday caused by an arrhythmia condition that was discovered when he
was in college at George Washington.

The 7ft Dare played four seasons in the National Basketball Association
for the Nets and averaged 2.1 points and 2.6 rebounds.
