Shaq was at his best in LA and if they do he should accept just to give the LA fans a chance to say thanks regardless of what happened with you and ownership. He was by far his best as a Laker.

I think they should retire it in LA, but not in Orlando.

It was a bit strange, certainly unprecedented in the NBA. But it's been done before in the NHL, or so I understand.

Yes the actual league retired Wayne G's number 99. I think Stern should have done the same for MJ. This prevents anyone else from wearing 23. It's too late now since many good players Lebron, JRich... wear 23.
The guy made the league what it is. Same as Wayne did for the NHL.

Of the topic, I was on an airplane the other day and I was sitting next to a few kids. Maybe 10 or 12 years old. They had never seen MJ play.
How nuts is that?

Yes, simply because he played most of his career there, and he brought the Lakers to some championships and a "dynasty" tag.

Ofcourse they should. He (along with Bryant and a great supporting cast) brought LA 3 championships. He received Finals MVP's in all three of them and even got a normal MVP during his stint with LA. I'd be appalled if they didn't retire it. :x

I think they will because all this rivalry schoolgirl shit he has with them will die down after a while, and he will be remembered there for winning 3 rings and the MVP. #34 will be retired in LA.

It's starting to get that way though. It's heading towards being a decade since Michael Jordan was in his prime, playing for the Bulls.

Thanks for the confirmation about Gretzky, I was sure I'd heard his #99 had been retired by the league.

Perhaps special provisions will be made. I'm pretty sure the Celtics have retired at least one jersey in honour of two players, Dave Cowens being one of them.

It's not that they don't want them, it's that certain numbers are generally disallowed by the league because of the number of fingers a ref can use to show a player's jersey number.

Interesting. Didn't know that. I thought it was tradition to use common numbers.

Ostertag number "00"

The whole thing with players not being allowed to wear the numbers that have been retired is a good idea.. although you have to remember that not many Jerseys are retired... like if you look around in the arenas you wont see that many.. so its still gonna be a long time till we have to worry about chosing numbers :P
Preparation will only take you so far. After that you've got to take a few leaps of faith.

I will definitely a BIG HELL YES....
He have done so much for the Lakers organization.... Maybe at the moment we saw bitterness between the 2 parties but i hope when time comes and Shaq retires, they will sort their difference and retire the no.34.

As a Lakers fan, I will be the first to be ashame of the Lakers if they will not retire it or even offer Shaq in retiring his jersey.

about the retiring of MJ's number in Heat it was a classy move by Riley and the Heat org.
