what are the Knicks thinking?

Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:13 pm

more like what were the suns thinking?LOL
i think this is a poor trade for the suns...KT is old and busted.why not the suns trade for a good shooter in exchange for richardson?

Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:18 pm

Thomas joins the bench, but who's gonna fil lthe gap @2 spot for Phx? I'm guessing they have a plan

Looks like Knicks are over Crwaford, Hardaway & Houston. Not bad on their part. They get to develop some of their young bigs.

EDIT: Marion slides to SF making room.

Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:20 pm

Are you guys serious? I'd take Thomas over Richardson anyday of the week, and they get a future first rounder.

This just helps them re-sign Joe Johnson and give them more of a complete line-up. I mean, they need a big body if they even want to contend against the Spurs. Kurt Thomas has a reliable mid-range jumper and he is solid on the boards and he can help control the paint.

Nash-Johnson-Marion-Amare-Thomas is a very, very solid line-up. Especially with Jim Jackson off the bench.

Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:23 pm

IMO kurt will slow the suns down (N) ....
not the type of high octane player is kurt thomas :(

Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:28 pm

They can still run, they can throw out a lineup with Nash-Jim Jackson-Joe Johnson-Marion-Amare and run teams to death. But the Suns problem was controlling the boards and defensively in the paint and KT brings that.

I think this was a great move by the Suns, KT comes in and makes that weakness a strength.

Thu Jun 23, 2005 5:48 pm

i like the fact Amare and Marion is going back to their natural postion. Marion at SF is gonna be a killer. But the Suns will be slower. I totally knew the suns would trade Richardson as he didn't do shit during the playoffs.

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:00 pm

Amare aint gonna go back to his natural position at PF if they got Kurt. That would be stupid to put him at PF and Kurt at C, Kurt is only 6'9".
So Amare is playing Center unless they get a new Center or play Hunter/Kurt at C which would be stupid.

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:01 pm

It doesn't really matter what position they play. Amare will guard the quicker player (most likely the PF) and Kurt will guard the more banger, low-post threat. And on offense Amare will roam around and Nash can drive and kick it out to KT for the mid-range jumper.

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:02 pm

I don't know about this, but awell Q-Rich will do ok in New York. I wonder who the Knicks will draft now that they lost a big man and have another 3 point shooting guard.

Edit: Also, Shawn Bradley retires

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:07 pm

why not? centers don't need to be taller than PFs. It all depends on the players. Nazr Mohammad is shorter than TD, KG is taller than whomever is playing the C in Minisota, Dirk is taller than Dampier, Gasol is taller than Wright. Amare doesn't have a lot of post moves. He's better at PF where he gets to move more, taking advantage of his quickness. Kurt Thomas has been playing C for a while now, and he's a pretty good rebounder and defender.

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:14 pm

I think Kurt Thomas can blend in with Phoenix Suns' line-up... plus he can rebound and not bad as a defender either (although not very good but still, better than Quentin Richardson). Phoenix already has Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, Steve Nash to shoot those perimeter shots; while Amare Stoudamire can rule the paint... Kurt Thomas can help improve Phoenix Suns next season... I'm still hoping that they can also aquire a decent seven footer who can block shots and grab rebounds as well...

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:19 pm

:applaud:

I really like this trade. Riot has pretty much covered it, but here it goes. Quentin is such an awful player to watch because he's so hit or miss. And this year he abandoned what had made him a good player before: the post. I think I remember seeing him post up 2 or 3 times in the whole season. And to top it off a defensive comparison of him could be a revolving door. Sure he nailed some timely threes (and missed some) and hit the offensive boards hard, but Kurt covers mroe weaknesses than Q.

Kurt can rebound well, and it's not like he's an offensive stiff either. He can nail the mid-range jumper consistently, and has a solid post game. So there is another low-post player to draw a little focus away from Amare. And on the other side of the court there is now two very good rebounders, better than one. He is a little older, but so is Jimmy Jackson (who is one of the reasons this trade works, the Suns can still small ball by rotating Jimmy in.) I'd rather take the chance on picking up another guard in the draft at the 21st pick than trying to find an effective big(ish) man.

And there's another draft pick coming in the next few years. The Knicks aren't crawling out of salary cap hell anytime soon so it should be pretty good.

Good day. Suns improve. I ace my English final. And I was pleasantly surprised watching that movie Hitch. Good day

Wen u said "better than one", the 'one' you meant is Amare yeah?

Amare's not really a very good rebounder though... or do you mean Marion?

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:39 pm

No, Marion. Shawn Marion is 6'7'' and one of the best rebounders in the league. Amare is athletic, but can't put a body on any one and get good position. Despite his athleticism he didn't even get 9 rpg. Which is just awful for someone like him. He was 17th in the league this year (just checked), and Marion was 3rd with 3.4 more per game.

Thats what I was about to say, how could you leave out the team leading rebounder Marion - 11.3 boards a game
But he did mean Marion, so thats OK

Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:49 pm

Man I don't know what to say about this trade...

The Suns are a fast break team and I don't see Thomas contributing to that. I rather have Richardson, main reason is the age factor. But I also think having Thomas in the lineup might give the Suns some depth and make them a better rebounding team. Guess we just have to wait and see what happens..

Thu Jun 23, 2005 8:08 pm

First of all, don't take this for granted... Inside sources my ass... you never know if it's real or if the teams are playing a game with the media hoping to influence other teams' draft decisions...

But let's assume for a moment that it's for real... I believe it's good for both sides, especially for the Knicks... KT was playing out of position at C, and NY has 3 PFs in Mo Taylor, Sweetney and the JYD... But none of these can play the 5 spot, so I'm definitely seeing the Knics drafting Channing Frye with the 8 pick, which comes in accordance with the mock draft I was prepearing...

Kurt Thomas is a bit of a banger and a seasoned vet who can help the Suns out a lot... The thing is, with him in te lineup, forget all those crazy running and gunning throughout the game... Kurt can't run to save his life, much less to contribute in an up-tempo game... But he should free up some space for Amare on offense while helping getting the big load of his shoulders on defense.

The Knicks will use Q-Rich at SF, unless they trade Jamal Crawford for a big man, which I do not see happening... If they get Frye and he turns out solid, if they can persuade JC and Marbs to think of passing a littl ebit more, and given the fact that they have a very deep bench with Taylor, JYD, Penny and Kurt Thomas, all they need is a backup PG,to make them one of the deepest teams in the league..

So, all in all, it seems like a good deal for both sides, with th eonly questionmark being how will Phoenix's running game be implemented...

Thu Jun 23, 2005 9:43 pm

With this trade, I think Allan Houston will surely be release sooner or later. With the new CBA they release him

Buttt you just said Kurt Thomas will be gone sooooo they wont have an as deep bench....

Thu Jun 23, 2005 9:56 pm

First off, (Y) on Bradely retiring.

Second,I think it's a bad deal for the Suns, because I can't picture Marion hitting that open three consistently like Richardson has in the past. Their lineup was well balanced and Thomas will cause chemistry problems at first ,plus he's quite old.

yes, my mistake... their bench is still deep, though, especially at the PF position, with Mo Taylor and Jerome Williams...

When does Thomas's contract expire?
