The new Rock/metal/music-thread

Postby Mentally Hilarious on Sat Jun 18, 2005 6:49 am

Did I really start a new thread with two others availiable? Yeah, I did. Why?

The first Rock-thread is big and sluggish, also it's so far back it's useless to revive it. And the other is created by Coolmac and has useless stuff in it.

(seriously though, if I should use one of the older ones, just lock this. Just felt it was time for a new one)

With summer coming here I just compiled a list of really amazing summerish albums, and also there's a few new releases that's great.

Spoon - Gimme Fiction should be heard by all, exellent mix of a lot of styles that makes summer even more enjoyable. Good buy for anyone.

Similar to: Architecture in Helsinki, Johnossi, a touch of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez in parts.

Jesu - Jesu this is about as good as doom gets. Listening to this record could be equalled to be fisted by a tank. It's huge, dark, massive and I just love it. It mixes early Neurosis with a touch of Isis (which more or less IS Neurosis...) and Candlemass. But what differs Jesu from the other acts in the same genre is the willingness to let diffrent types of electronica shine through, often at the end of songs. But that does not mean that the sheer aggressiveness and depth of the music is compromised. This places very high on my top-50 albums of all time.

Similar to: Candlemass, Electric Wizard, Neurosis, Isis, and the trippier parts of Mahavishnu Orchestra (I'm the only one who thinks this though, my friends shoots that comparison to the ground...)

Cloud Cult - Advice From the Happy Hippopotamus W.O.W. All that makes music good (not really, but buy in to it this time) is here. Willingness to make every goddamn creative spark take it's place on the album, eclectism (not the bullshit kind that Wycleaf Jean named his album after), and pure fun. Live shows mixed in to the studioversions, exerpts from the jamsessions to set the mood, fillers that makes the transitions between songs a wonderful experience and other things. I love this album, but I'm not sold on it's longevity. When you "know" it, it's just there and it doesn't really have those small things that you discover first after a few months of heavy listening. But it's still a very, very, very good album. Almost a must-have.

Other albums worth mentioning; Sigur Ròs - ( ), Johnossi - Johnossi, Four Tet - Rounds, Patton and Kaada - s/t.

What, and let the rap thread have 21 pages ahead of us? We'll see what others think, but though I enjoy rock and alternative lots, I'm not too famililar with the underground scene.

Nirvana all the way :headbang: Lately, I've been listening to Filter lots.

So very mainstream-ish.

Don't think I'm really sold on any really big band, mostly because they don't play the music I like, and I'm just against music created for profit (post Metallica (black album) and everything after Use Your Illusion II).

I like "The Reson" by Hoobastank.

I like a few more others, I like Limp Bizkit, don't hate. I like rap more than rock but from time to time I bump some Rock on my CPU like Korn and whatnot.

Well, I'm not sure if Creed is considered Rock, but I do have two albums of theirs, I dig those two.

I had most of Limp Bizkit's CD's, Linkin Parks Hybrid Theory, 2 of Papa Roaches CD and all of the Korn albums, alas I left them all back on the Island in boxes. Hope I'll get those back around december.

As I've said, my musical taste varies from day to day. I can listen to an Eminem on Monday and a Creed CD on Tuesday. Then I can go all musical and just put on the Hans Zimmer composed album from the motion picture "The Rock" or "Gladiator".

Ofcourse with all of that, my daily dosage of reggaeton has to be fed.

As I was saying, let me know if Creed is or isn't rock, I asked Jowe, but he's ignoring me again. :x

Jackal: Yeah, Creed's considered to be alternative rock.

Songs I'm listening to right now:

Nirvana - Lounge Act, Pen Cap Chew, Verse Chorus Verse
Linkin Park - Breaking the Habit
Filter - Hey Man Nice Shot, Take a Picture
White Stripes - Blue Orchid
Foo Fighters - The Best of You
OLP - One Man Army, 4am, Life, Thief

How can you say Rush is mainstream!! Before 2112 they were absolutely unknown outside of Canada.

And they are not interested in profit believe me, they are above that.

Rather the bazillion of greatest hits (here in Sweden I've seen 3, dunno if there are more). And yeah, music made for profit is fucking bullshit. Sure you should make money, but it shouldn't be the driving force behind the creation. Then the reason behind arts is lost and instantly goes on my shitlist, no matter the artist.

Jona - Not Rush. Never Rush. 2112 is one of the top-50 albums of all times.

Guns n roses have only released one greatest hits album, and the band & axl themselves tried to stop it being released. The record company are the ones that released it....

You've seen three? ... Did you see the loch ness monster too. They were bootlegs. Most of the time the artist hardly see any money from record sales, the only time they get a fat paycheck is when they tour.

Yeah, my former roommate had three, but since i loathe GNR I didn't look too closly. But they didn't look like bootlegs to me.
And your claim that artists seldom see money from recordsales are more relevant today, but before the p2p-boom (when this is relevant) it's not.

No matter if they make money through the records, that's not the basis of what I'm saying.
When music is created in the purpose of making money, I find it to be crap and the artist directly slots themselves into "we're whores" category that I have in my head somewhere.

Money shouldn't be the reason for putting out music in my book. And that's all there is to it.

No... I'm talking about if you buy an album.. now or ten years ago. More then likely less then 10% of it goes to the artist. All the money goes to the record company.

The artists make their money from the contract they sign with the record company. Thats when you hear people calling bands / artists sellouts, is when they sign to big record companys for a load of money.

Selling alot of albums, doesn't make an artist a music sell out whore.

If thats the case are you calling Led Zeppelin, Queen, Black Sabbath sellout whores? :?
