You have to look at all these years with Pierce and the Celtics. They haven't produced consistently. I think Pierce is a very talented well rounded player but he just needs a helping hand and I don't think Antoine Walker fits those shoes. It's either ship him off for a good bunch of players, or a draft pick and cross your fingerss... OR keep him and bring in a good player that can help him grow to be a better player.
Preparation will only take you so far. After that you've got to take a few leaps of faith.

Since Portland is already far over the salary cap, the trade rumoured is Pierce for the 3rd pick and Nick Van Exel. They would probably end up taking Green, although if Atlanta weren't so fucking stupid, they would take Chris Paul because they already have Josh Smith, Josh Childress, AL Harrington and Boris Diaw who are all young combo guard forwards, yet they have no point guard outside of an aging Tony Delk and an unproven undrafted Royal Ivey.

The trade would give Boston about $13 million in cap room though, as Van Exel's contract only has next season remaining, and it is a team option. Boston would most likely decline it as soon as they acquire him, and then focus on resigning Walker and Payton, although its already been speculated that they don't want either of them back. Basically all this would do is make an already young team much younger.

well since he's a free agent, and really has never been a capable starter anywhere, I decided not to include him

No because then he'd get schooled by all the great small forwards in the West Conference, won't be able to get a starting position in the All-Star game, will have a hard time adjusting to a new system and portland is just going nowhere. Boston is still a better team than Portland but they new some need blood, someone who can jump start them up.

As I've stated over at RealGM, I'm all for a rebuilding phase since I don't see this team, barring a major overhaul, getting #17.
