Interesting, most people so far would rather be Robert Horry.

Oh, my bad. Still would rather be Karl.
Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:22 pm
I wouldn't think of it like that at all. Think of it this way... Horry (2 Rings) Malone (Future Hall of Famer), 2nd all-time scoring...thats almost better than a ring dude. Just cuz Horry has rings doesn't make him ANY better than Malone. I personally can't even believe people are comparing the two players. They're in two different worlds man.
Check my previous posts and you'll see that my point is the exact same as yours...
Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:25 pm
Lol sorry brotha, I didn't read your previous posts. Just that one...I agree with what you have to say in that previous post, just the fact that many would rather be Horry seems to suprise me. I would've never thought that. Just shows the difference between peoples opinions these days..
Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:26 pm
it's not about who would want to be a better basketball player, as most people would choose Karl Malone....it's not about comparing the 2 as Malone is clearly the better player....
it's about who you would rather be....that means including the player's situation after his career is over, and that's why I chose Horry....
Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:40 pm
You judge the situation including hindsight... which is fair enough as a concept but unfair to Malone... I mean, I would rather be a team leader for 20 years, regular MVP candidate and one of the best player to ever grace the courst... but I would need the DRIVE provided by the chase of the title... no matter whether that comes in the end or not... The Ring is only the means to keep on fighting, winning, and becoming a better player for yourself and your teammates... If, in the end, you are not so lucky as to have gotten one, then what can you do...
As the wise man said, the journey is far more inmportant than the destination... it's just that the destination is necessary for the journey to occur... ( the DRIVE we were talking about

)

Just becaue you performed in the clutch doesn't necessarily mean you get remember more than a future hall of famer who never won titles, look at Don Nelson, if it weren't for him being a coach, no one would remember his last second shot, playing for the celtics, that bounced high off the rim above the backboard and went in.
Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:51 pm
Nor would we be talking about a coach who wore a fish tie and sneakers.
Wed Jun 15, 2005 10:28 pm
ahh dweaver....a nice analogy "the journey is more important than the destination"....so true....
I learnt that in my 3rd year Leadership paper in my undergraduate degree....
I re-read the poll question and it said who's career would you rather, and in that case, I'd say Karl Malone's....I was just reading other people's responses and the thread changed to personal stuff....that's why I said Robert Horry, as I would prefer privacy after I finished my career if I had the choice....basketball-wise, yep, Malone's career was great....
Thu Jun 16, 2005 1:02 am
After reading all of those posts...I still would've chose Horry. What's better than coming off-the bench, and
still play in the last minutes of the game and be able to make a difference that could win championships.
Oh, and to that comparison that Dweaver proposed...I would've chose Darko. What's better than play 2-3 minutes per game and have a championship? What can I say, I'm a lazy fuck

It's all about right time, right place, right team which is why I'd much rather retire and be remembered for what I did as a player, not for playing on championship teams and occassionally hitting a big shot.
Amen to that... Karl was one shot and a good game away from a ring... not making it doesn't mean he was a choker... I'd rather be one of the best and enjoy the game at the top, rather than just have rings to show off... I deeply respect and admire Horry, but Malone is at least two levels higher on my list... Playing up until I'm 39 and still scoring 20ppg on a winning team, that's something I would like to achieve more than winning the title...
Plus you can do no wrong having Malone's physique...
pretty much how I feel. I'd much rather win those championships if I was carrying the team.
Thu Jun 16, 2005 3:55 am
I think the choice is clear... Personally , being a Spurs fan-wagoner ( little above bandwagoner status and a little below fan status

) I'd still prefer a 40 year old Karl Malone in the team now, rather than Big Shot Bob... Too bad the Mailman decided to call it quits and not sign with us for another chance at the ring... I wonder if he'd still be called a loser if he got the title this year, even playting limited minutes as a backup...
Thu Jun 16, 2005 8:21 am
hey.. victory is mine! don't take yourself so seriously, jae.
poor comparison, dweaver. darko is nowhere the contributor that horry is.
imo this is just personall preference, not saying one player/choice is better then the other
the destination is the purpose of the journey.. what kind of journey would you consider it if you never got to the destination??

Ha... first plans never stick up... you always have to adjust on the way, sometimes changing your destination... one of the many nuisances of life that tend to make it all the more exciting and better once wisdom starts to set in....
But enough of this... the ring is what keeps the teams and guys going... but not the sole purpose of the game's existence... the purpose of the game's ( and every game's ) existence is competition... becoming better and win... win a matchup, win a challenge, win a charge, grab that rebound... that is basketball... if it was all about rings then 29 out of the 30 teams would shut down shop after each season...
And yes, Darko is nowhere near Bob... but Rik Smits , despite putting up fine numbers for 7 years or so, is nowhere near Malone's scoring totals or athletic longevity... So it's pretty much even...
Thu Jun 16, 2005 8:40 am
Horry will not be remember years from now. Malone will be on that all-time list and possible top 50 players. I voted for Malone, with the exception of that Lakers run he made. It would have been easier to pick him if he retired in Utah.
Thu Jun 16, 2005 8:41 am
Horry shouldn't be in the top 50 players?

I wouldn;t even consider him in teh top 50 Players...tahts a complete joke.

Top 50 CLUTCH players, sure....
Thu Jun 16, 2005 8:47 am
He didn't say that though.
Thu Jun 16, 2005 9:55 am
no way horry should be top 50, not even top 100. that fool would be lucky if he was even top 150 of all time. being said, i would take his career over karl malones any day of the week.

at some point of malone's career, winning a championship became his main focus. never happened. maybe he's smarter, but still never achieved his goal. lol we're talking about basketball, not life. he didn't change his destination, he kept on coming back, trying to win. even contradicted himself in the process by going to the lakers.

not the sole purpose but the ultimate goal/prize. actually all 30 teams shut it down after the season

while not all are in title contention, most are trying to get there in one form or another

smits is a lot closer to malone then darko is to horry. why not just use similar players in the same situation lol
Thu Jun 16, 2005 10:36 am
Horry is like Top 300 or something lol

So you're saying his carreer has been for nothing because he didn't get a ring? Just because he didn't get to that ultimate goal doesn't mean he's worth less than a guy who just was there to help when his number was called, and nothing else... I'd like to see defenses adjusting to Horry during the final minutes of close games like they did on Malone, and then we might see who we would ( inexcusably and unjustifiably ) call a worthless bench player...
not the sole purpose but the ultimate goal/prize. actually all 30 teams shut it down after the season while not all are in title contention, most are trying to get there in one form or another
My point exactly... I myself am a Warriors fan... I don't expect us to get the title next year, I'll be kept interested by the fight to reach th eplayoffs after 10 yeasr of drought... Baby steps, getting better and better than what you were previously and slowly overmatching your opposition, that's what team sports is all about...
smits is a lot closer to malone then darko is to horry. why not just use similar players in the same situation lol
Okay, they may not play thesame position, but here goes...
Derek Fisher vs. Charles Barkley
