Should EA add new players rating?

Talk about NBA Live 06 here.

Should EA add new players rating?

Postby beau_boy04 on Sun Jun 12, 2005 5:44 pm

Such as charisma, basketball IQ, leadership, so on and so forth. I'm also routing for that one of the moderator said once about having individual rating on different shots - closed shot, jumper shot, etc etc

What new rating should EA add to their system in order to make the game more realistic and fun?

Thank you in advance.

The Offensive/Defensive Awareness ratings are basically the Basketball IQ ratings. If team chemistry is implemented a leadership rating could probably also be added. I don't mind the idea of seperate ratings for different shots as such, though I think they could be governed by tendencies/playing style attributes rather than 0-99 ratings. The important thing is that all the ratings have the desired effect.

I think they should elaborate on the current ratings.
Maybe a slider for flamboyant - fundamental
instead of fg, ratings for different shooting ranges.

Hustle rating maybe.
Maybe some ratings for the different possible offensive moves. ie post scoring rating, fadeaway tendency, etc etc.

Hell yeah! I want a seperated rating for back-to-the-basket scoring and player's penetrate&finish rating. And they should've bring back that clutch rating.

I think they should have personal characteristics for some players.....example their are "party players" these are the guys who go to night clubs all the time and are out late partying. Their performance could be inconsistent on a nightly basis, but they could be well liked by their teammates. Then their could be like "family man players" where they are more quiet off the court, don't party or go to clubs and would rather spend time with family etc, but they tend to give 110% every night, and work hard, and play consistent ball.

The Fire Pro Wrestling series uses "CPU Logic" on all the wrestlers, which makes it play very realistically. NBA Live could do the same thing.

I tried working it out once. Basically you would have a menu of a number of situations, then sliders for how likely they are to try each option. Like for example...

Player has ball behind halfcourt line
Attempt Fast Break
Walk Ball Up
Hold ball, pass to better ball-handler

Player is isolated on the wing
Dribble drive
Look for post-up
Look for three-point shot

Player is driving to the basket
Pull-up for jumper
Look for kick-out
Try to score

Etc etc.

You can see how some basic logic would really improve the realism. There aren't a lot of other ways to get Allen Iverson and Jason Kidd to play the way they really do.

As far as extra ratings go, I'd like to see Lay-up rating. That would decide who can do those up-and-unders and double-clutch layups, and who just takes it straight in (and probably gets blocked).

I agreed! the clutch rating should come back! but this time around there should have to type of clutch rating - one for shooting (Jerry West, Reggie Miller, MJ, Robert Horry are only few examples) and another one for others (Larry Bird, Hakeem, Prince, etc) I hope you guys understood what I meant.

Player preference should be added for example a player's preference to drive to the basket alot (Wade, early MJ, etc), others prefer to shoot it (Damon Jones, Brent Barry, etc)

We should also be able to name team's captains like Madden 2005 - that would be a cool feature.

Team morale has got to be a must - Madden and MVP have it incorporated, and I don't see why Live doesn't.

I like fgrep15's ideas but maybe too many ratings would throw off the overall rating a little bit.

Yup, it's all about how they're weighted though. First of all tendency ratings wouldn't affect the overall rating at all.

Next, you'd have ratings like:

Off-Balance Shot
Contested Shot
Fadeaway
Dunk In Traffic
Crossover quickness
Crossover effectiveness
Alley-Oop Pass
and maybe Fouling weigh a lot less than the other ones.

They're more like complimentary ratings, just to make the players accurate, while the other ratings are actually determining the players overall skill.

An example of a player, Kevin Garnett:

Close Shots - 90
Mid-range Jump shot - 81
3 point - 57
Free Throw - 80
Off-Balance Shot - 70
Contested Shot - 75
Fadeaway - 80
Inside Scoring - 85
Layup - 71
Dunk - 84
Dunk in Traffic - 77
Jump - 80
Strength - 72
Speed - 76
Quickness - 74
Offensive Awareness - 91
Left hand dribble - 55
Right hand dribble - 65
Crossover quickness - 55
Crossover effectiveness - 60
Pass - 82
Alley-Oop Pass - 66 [Not like he has anyone to alley the ball to on his team]
Defensive Awarness - 86
Perimeter Defense - 69
Post/Inside Defense - 84
Pick and Roll Defense [new addition] - 85
Stealing - 73
Blocking - 74
Foul Drawing - 74
Fouling - 90 [The higher the fouling rating, the less foul prone a player is]
Clutch - 76
Leadership - 81
Stamina - 92
Primacy - 85

I forgot the rebounding ones
Offensive Rebound - 75
Defensive Rebound - 96

TENDENCIES

Close shot - 31
Mid-Range - 69
Outside - 10 (Close, Mid and Outside should all equal 100)
[For these ratings, 50 is the middle, over 50 means more to the option on the right side, and under means more to the option on the left side. The middle could also be zero, and just have it go 50 both ways or even a lower number like 20.]
Post up vs Face up - 71
Drive vs Shoot - 66
Pass vs Shoot - 70
Flashy vs Fundamental - 65
Offensive Movement vs One on one/Freestyle moves - 65
Fakes/Pump Fake Use - 70
Dunk vs Layup - 44
Fadeaway Usage - 75
Foul Drawing vs Avoid Contact - 48
Finnese vs Power - 37
Pick and Roll usage - 63
Pass vs Shoot on Pick and Roll - 50
Steal Gamble vs Straight up Defense - 80
Block Gamble vs Straight up Defense - 67
Aggressive vs Conservative Defense - 41
Energetic vs Lazy Defense - 41

That's probably the best idea I've seen for this years NBA Live to make it more realistic.

personally i would like to see the overall rating just go away. give me ratings for everything and leave the overall out. who cares about it anyway, its the other ratings that determine what a player can and cant do. several times i have traded a player for someone a good 4-5 overall less than the guy i gave away cause his other ratings suited my needs better. then on top of that i can throw in a total scrun and get a second quality player from the comp since in its mind i am already giving up so much.

I find that to a certain degree realistic. Isn't that what teams do? Trade players for other players who have skills that suits their needs?

I just find that you should try and trade realistically, not just try and use the flaws in the game.

I like fgrep15's suggestions, but they won't be implemented till about live 2012 I suppose. :(
It's way too much, way too complicated to do from a programmers point of view.
I propose to just add 2 or 3 more ratings, like clutch rating. But I guess the reason it has been taken out of the game may be that this is too some extent sort of insulting for the players, I don't think they want any ratings in the game that describe the player's character and clutch does exactly that. The same is valid for leadership or Energetic vs Lazy Defense. But even though I hope for the clutch-rating to find its way back into the game. Who is going to define these ratings anyway, it's plain crazy doing it for all NBA players. Some other ratings I'd really appreciate would be set shot and contested shot. Splitting up into midrange, close shots and 3's is also easy to implement and would make the game much more interesting.

i am a firm believer that you cannot trade realisticly within nba live. just look at some of the deals we have seen in the nba this year alone. only way you can make those happen in nba live is if you are on the losing end. i believe EA needs to put in a ton of work on the entire trade system one year. add in 3 team trades(they happen yearly now) and totally overhaul the computer trading AI

I think shooting rating should be splitted into
hoop shot, jump shot, fade away shot etc~~
since some players, especially centres
are good at hoop shots but not normal shots~~
also in online mode
it will be great if the all 5 pos can be controlled by 5 players(us) at the same time
but not cpu

i agree that shooting rateings should be split. i dont like just the inside/out way of things now. i mean just cause steve kerr was damn deadly from down town does not mean he will nail them all day from mid range. so yeah, i agree with this
