April Recap

1 May, Los Angeles

The Number One seed for the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Lakers walked off the STAPLES Center court victoriously after their thrashing of the Toronto Raptors. Kobe Bryant signalled his team from the sideline and they returned half an hour later to their Pacific Title presentation, Magic Johnson said, "This is only the start of the awards! We're going to go deep into the playoffs this year."

The team is on a run as they have won all of their last eight games and finished their season on a home record of 14-1. Their first round opponent has turned out to be the Pau Gasol led Memphis Grizzlies.

A highlight of the season was captain Kobe Bryant's return from injury and has seen him average 30 ppg in 2 starts and 2 games off the pine. Even more impressive were his two games in which he was fully healthy. Against Golden State he scored 51 points and he had 47 against the Raptors. In his two other games, Bryant was pivitol in both victories.

"Kobe's shown us how invaluable his presence is to us," Head Coach Magic Johnson stated in the Lakers' post season function when the team handed out awards for the first time.

The recipients of the Lakers first inaugural award night were:

Team MVP: Kobe Bryant
Players Award: Brian Grant
Best Team Player: Kwame Brown
Defender of the Year: Ron Artest
Special Merit Awards: Kareem Rush and Juan Dixon
Sit's Spirit Award: Kareem Rush

NBA Players of the Month

SF Grant Hill averaged 16.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1 bpg and 1.67 apg and took out Eastern Conference Player of the month as he helped lead Orlando into the position of the number 2 seed. The Memphis Grizzlies held onto their position and stuck onto the eigth and final position in the playoffs, thanks to James Posey's 18.1 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 1.6 apg and 2 spg.

The Magic went 3-3 for the month of April. In an 86-94 win over the Sacramento Kings, Hill played a solid match and finished on 14 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 blocks. He scored 24 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assits and had 4 steals in a 90-111 triumph over the Washington Wizards. He exploded for 32 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals in a 79-90 win over the Sixers that helped the team clinch their Division title.

Memphis looked set to stay in the middle of the pack in the playoffs race unti lthey dropped a few games. Then James Posey helped bring his team back. Memphis lost 3 straight before ending the month on a 4 game winning streak. Posey scored 23 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals in a 113-89 thrashing of the Charlotte Bobcats. He scored a season high 36 points against the Portland Trailblazers in a 115-85 win. Then he helped limit Allen Iverson to 16 points on 5 for 18 shooting and scored 15 points himself and added that to 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

GotMilk? Rookies of the Month

Charlotte is only getting its feet onto the ground as Cothran Tyson is burning up the hardcourt. Tyson was brilliant in a 98-73 win over the Clippers as he seemed to sink every shot he took. The guard finished on 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. In the last game of the season, Tyson exploded and scored a career high 40 points in a 98-97 win over Utah. He also assisted the game winning lay up in overtime.

Denver went a very disappointing 0-5 for the month and thanks to this they have dropped from 1st down to 7th place. However, the losing doesn't overshadow the performance of Remus McCarty. Remus scored 30 points and 5 rebounds in a blockbuster overtime loss to the Lakers. He then scored 15 points and dished out 6 dimes in a close 90-96 loss to Washington. Remus finished on a game high 25 points in a 106-108 loss to the Utah Jazz and scored 7 three pointers in that match.

Cothran Tyson averaged 18.5 ppg, 4 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.25 spg and Remus McCarty averaged 17.8 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg and 1.4 spg over the course of April.

FIRST ROUND: Grizzlies Throw Down Gauntlet to Lakers

21-8 LA Lakers (1) vs. 17-12 Memphis Grizzlies (8)

The Los Angeles Lakers will welcome the Memphis Grizzlies onto their home court in a best of five games series. The Pau Gasol led Grizzlies will try to stop a hot Lakers team and a very determined Kobe Bryant who is looking to win the NBA Championship that injury helped elude him last year. Here is a breakdown on the two teams:

Center: Kwame Brown vs. Stromile Swift

Kwame Brown's 19.4 ppg, 14.2 rpg, 3.2 apg and 1.10 bpg was good enough to get him a spot on the All-star team this year. He will face off against Stromile Swift in a matchup which looks one sided in favour of the Laker big man. Brown has one of the most powerful inside games in the NBA today and he has filled in the void of Shaquille O’Neal well. He has followed in O’Neal’s footsteps by making a good percentage of his shots in the paint and tying with O’Neal for 1st place in rebounding. Swift will have a tough time with Kwame and his 11.6 ppg and 9.7 rpg won’t stand too well.

Edge: Lakers

Forwards: Carlos Boozer/Ron Artest vs. Pau Gasol/James Posey

Artest and Gasol have both been All-Stars in the past while Boozer and Posey are both great role players. Boozer and Artest are very good defensive players that LA must rely on to shut down Grizzlies scorers. And both are capable of scoring too, with Artest a pleasant surprise from behind the arc, ranking 9th on three point percentage with 43%. Posey and Gasol are very versatile and space out on the floor well, Artest and Boozer need to cover their men well this series to be able to give the Lakers their best chance of winning. However, the Lakers forwards should be able to shut down their opponents thanks to Boozer’s ability to rebound the ball and Artest’s perimeter defense.

Edge: Lakers

Guards: Kobe Bryant/Fredrik Ratchuk vs. Mike Miller/Jason Williams

Jason Williams is vital to Memphis’ success due to his playmaking skills. Mike Miller can get hot at any time. Ratchuk’s inexperience is a key problem for the Lakers and it should be expected that Kobe Bryant will be controlling the rock even more than usual. Right now, Kobe is a MVP like player averaging 31 ppg, 7 rpg, 6.5 apg and 3.3 spg and it will be him who will take the Lakers to the promised land. The Grizzlies backcourt is going to have trouble even when it comes down to 2 on 1.

Edge: Lakers

Bench:

The Grizzlies bench is nothing when compared to the Lakers. Los Angeles have sharpshooter Kareem Rush who stepped into a starting role and averaged 20 ppg, Juan Dixon is a great energy provider from off the bench, Kyle Korver can shoot the rock from three point land and Brian Grant can get a double double on any night from off the pine. When compared to Memphis’ Shane Battier, Lorenzon Wright and Brain Cardinal, they definitely win in terms of depth. As former Grizzlies GM Jerry West said, “We have a second starting lineup in Rush, Juan, Kyle, Grant and Randall.”

Edge: Lakers

Intangibles:

The Lakers are on an 8 game winning streak, they’ve got home court advantage and are 14-1 at home and they got Kobe who has scored 98 points in total form his last two games. Is that hot enough for LA to win? Plus, Kobe and the team are on a mission after he missed last year’s playoffs due to injury and LA was one series short from the Finals.

Edge: Lakers

Result:

This is looking like a sweep for the red hot Lakers and look for Kobe Bryant to tear them up as the Lakers are better in all departments that the teams share.

Prediction: Lakers win 3-0

Team Statistics Comparison:

LA Lakers | Grizzlies

109 ppg | 95 ppg
54 rpg | 43 rpg
28 apg | 21 apg
3.7 bpg | 6.7 bpg
9.6 spg | 9.5 spg

I really dont know why you are starting lamar odom as a shooting guard... I think he is way better as power forward, he has some good mid range shots, and you can try train him the same way as dirk nowitski...

I would put odom as power forward and kobe as shooting, then start luke walton...

but its my opinion...

Grizzlies Surprise Lakers in OT Loss

MEM: 26 – 25 – 16 – 22 – 14 – 103
LAL: 18 – 17 – 26 – 28 – 19 – 108

21-8 Los Angeles Lakers lead series against 17-12 Memphis Grizzlies 1-0

Los Angeles – Los Angeles underestimated the Memphis Grizzlies and had to fight to claw back into a game in which they trailed by as much as 18 points. Magic Johnson was clearly angry at his players as he made clear what he wanted, “We (Lakers) cannot just stroll into the series expecting a sweep without working for it. We’re in the West, anything can happen!”

In the playoffs, teams step up their games and play at another level and Memphis seemed to have been running at two gears higher than usual. After a 15-2 run at the very beginning of the game and then a barrage of three point baskets, the Grizzlies looked as if they would easily pull out a surprise Game One win. However, Kobe Bryant took over in the fourth quarter and overtime to help his team get past their youthful opponents.

Bryant scored 10 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter including a lay up with 8.4 seconds left which tied the game and sent it into overtime. He then scored 8 more points including 4 free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Kobe added 7 assists and 5 rebounds to his own individual boxscore. Carlos Boozer had a great game as he flirted with a triple double finishing with 20, 15 and 8 while Kwame Brown dominated in the paint with 24 and 22.

Pau Gasol led his team with 15 points, 16 rebounds, Mike Miller and James Posey led the scoring attack with 24 and 22 points respectively. Jason Williams did his best to direct the offence with 17 and 8 assists.

An exhausted Ron Artest commented on the game, “Memphis aren’t as good as us but they do play better in some areas and they use it as their strengths very wisely. We need to do this!”

Artest was right as Memphis dominated with their interior defence swatting anyone who drove to the rim and intimidated those that they couldn’t swat. Pau Gasol and Stromile Swift had an impressive 7 blocks apiece. “We are proud of our defensive skills and for a team like the Lakers who have Kobe,” Gasol stated, “We need to rely on these skills to win.” And when the defence stopped the Lakers from scoring, they used their outside shooting to get ahead. Mike Miller and James Posey made 7 three pointers together in the first quarter and only missed once each in the period. “We were hot man,” Posey said, “I couldn’t believe how hot my hand was and I couldn’t miss.”

Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, their long distance shooting spell only lasted till the third quarter and by the time the second half rolled around, LA was the one who began to shoot well. Carlos Boozer and Kwame Brown scored 18 points in the third period to help pull the home team back into the game. It happened behind a 12-0 run in the third quarter and then another 8-0 run which got the home team as close as 3 points to their opponents.

Then Bryant decided to take over the fourth quarter with a few quick jumpers to get the Lakers back into a 1 point ball game. He went cold but Kwame Brown continued to dunk his way onto the stat sheet. The former number one pick scored 8 points in the fourth quarter. Los Angeles took a slight lead for a minute before losing it again to the hot shooting Grizzlies.

As they trailed 91-86 with 55.5 seconds left, Ron Artest hit a big shot from downtown. The SF then did even better on the defensive end by forcing Posey into a rushed shot and with 41.3 seconds left, the Lakers rushed the ball back down to the offensive end. The crowd went quiet as Boozer missed a dunk which could have tied the match. Memphis called a timeout and went inside to Pau Gasol on the ensuing play. Gasol’s shot was blocked by Kwame Brown and the Lakers took their time to set up their next play.

Kobe Bryant ran off a pick and then passed to the rolling Brown who went for a six foot hook shot which clanked off the rim. Boozer was there for the rebound and grabbed it and called a timeout with 15.7 seconds left. Then Bryant shone as he caught the ball on the left hand side of the court on the baseline. He drove to the hoop and somehow got a finger roll past the Grizzlies’ defence with 8.4 ticks left on the clock. Mike Miller missed a shot as time expired.

The crowd was raucous as Bryant ran off court with his fist in the air. The Grizzlies were speechless and Brian Shaw knew why, “Kobe has been incredible in the clutch, he’s done it for the third time in the last 6 games!”

Overtime saw Juan Dixon come out to hit a three to begin it then Boozer powered his way to dunk over Gasol to put LA ahead by 5. The score inflated itself while Memphis found a way for its scorers to send them back into a tie with LA. That was when Kareem Rush came in. When Juan Dixon’s three pointer was disallowed due to the shot clock and the crowd stood in protest and booed, Rush stole the ball on the next play and sank a dagger three pointer, two steps from behind the arc with 1:37 left to send LA up 104-103. The Grizzlies couldn’t get back at the home team after that and Kobe Bryant iced the game with 4 straight free throws.

“Rush’s shot was a big shot,” Team Captain Bryant said, “It was huge, reminded me of Robert (Horry) when he was with us!”

NOTES

Game 2 will be played in the STAPLES Centre in 2 days… PG Juan Dixon might start at PG for LA after Rookie Fredrik Ratchuk’s inability to step up…

:applaud: Ah a Vintage Kobe performance, well done, its still exciting for oyu by the looks of it. Yeha start Dixon, its a big ask for Freddie to take the pressure in his Rookie season.

Good Luck for the next game

I'm not looking too bad on my predictions...yet.

Kwame with a 20-20 game, and Booz with almost a triple double. Your team is pretty stacked.

I'm not looking so good in the predictions :x

Good job on the first game, your bound to win the championship because like Remy said, your stacked unless one of your key players get hurt (JINX)

Fellas, Good news was that I played my next two games and swept the Grizzlies... bad news is that while i was copying the stats of the second game, my pc crashed and so i had to simulate the series cause i cannot be stuffed to play it again!

So here are some crappy game recaps and lets move on to the next round!

Lakers Survive Miller's Hot Hand

MEM: 17 - 28 - 24 - 14 - 83
LAL: 23 - 32 - 22 - 16 - 93

21-8 Los Angeles Lakers lead series against 17-12 Memphis Grizzlies 2-0

Los Angeles – For the second game of the series, the Lakers underestimated their opponents. Mike Miller led the charge for Memphis and scored 33 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Pau Gasol was a monster on the boards, grabbing 16 rebounds and scoring 14 points.

Miller was hot from behind the arc as he hit 7 three pointers from only 9 attempts. The STAPLES Center crowd booed everytime he touched the ball and Bryant played some stifling defence down the stretch to prevent him from doing any more damage.

"We can't keep going into games expecting to win without trying," Coach Magic Johnson verbally criticised his team. His star player Kobe Bryant lead the Lakers to the win with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and was vital to the Lakers down the stretch. Bryant lead the Lakers to their 12-0 run that ended the game in a horrible shooting display in the fourth period.

Memphis had dominated in the 8 minutes leading up to the finale of the second game of the first round. They had limited Los Angeles to 6 points in 7 minutes and scored 14 to tie the score at 83-83. Then Bryant came to life by scoring 6 points for the Lakers and assisting an alley oop that sent the Grizzlies' morale into a ditch.

"We played very bad in the final quarter and it was hard to get the team back into the game but after I hit my shots I guess it was ok again!" Kobe Bryant stated. Miller was bitterly disappointed as his team was about to return home to defend their chances of getting swept. "We will forget about tonight and think about Game 3. Our backs are against the wall and we need to play well to keep ourselves in this."
