The Cleveland Cavaliers in the offseason....

Sun May 08, 2005 9:15 pm

-Unlike the other thread suggesting Lebron James to be traded, I think he needs to stay and be the man and take this to the next level.

-Gooden played good and showed sign of greatness but he needs to be more consistent. I hope he's back next season.

-Clev needs to keep Z, he's one of the best C in the East and around the League.

-The PG situation needs to get fixed ASAP.

-Phil Jackson, Flip Saunders, or whoever they bring over mmm about Collins? or Chuck Daily?

-New GM

-Toppest free agents: Ray Allen, Michael Redd, Joe Johnson, etc etc.

I checked the official Cleveland website and they have an article in there about their interest in Ray Allen, on how great he performed in the first round, etc etc. He won't be turning 30 until July. If Clev gets him they'll be one of the top teams in the East but age might be an issue here. Take in consideration how well Jordan played once he reached his 30s so there's always a bright side...

In the long run, I think Michael Redd will be a better choice if he keeps on improving his shooting and his game in general plus he's younger.

Some might think Joe Johnson is the top candidate coz he has an overall game, can shoots the 3's, and is more athletic than the 2 players mentioned above.

So with that said, what do you guys think they should do?

I think that Cleveland must keep Big Z if they want to be something (LeBron too).

But has Cleveland enough cap space to sign a guy like Ray Allen? Especially, if they resign Big Z?

I don't think Cleveland needs to sign an all-star shooting guard from the free agents, as whoever it may be - Redd or Allen, likes to take plenty of shots and will most likely clash with Lebron trying to lead the team. If anything, Cleveland needs a better front court (Ilgauskas is decent, but needs help) and some better role players. The Cavs will be scary next year with Lebron still growing.

i was thinking of letting Big Z go and gettin someone like dalembert or swift. lose all their old/slow people . try to get atheletic young guys , hire a coach who can run an up-tempo team , and become a fast break team . they'll play alot better like this.

Mon May 09, 2005 9:01 am

I heard the new owner scared Flip and Phil away from coaching there.

I don't think it is wise to let Ilgauskas go. How many centers are better offensively than he is? Let's count: Shaq, Jermaine O'Neal (if we say he's not a PF) and err.. thats all (I think that Big Z is better than Yao; and Amare is more a PF). But who can run in Cleveland? James and Gooden. I don't think that Traylor, Newble, Snow, Welsh, Pavlovic are good and that. That means they should throw away most of their team. Also, the best fastbreaking teams like Dallas and Phoenix end lots of their fastbreakes with 3 pointers. Cleveland doesn't have any 3 point shooter to do that.

I think that Cleveland needs a good shooter and a good bigman on the bench to improve their team.

PJ isn't an option for Cleveland anymore.
It doesn't sound like Zydrunas is either, he personally asked LeBron to stop trying to get management to resign him and wore a NY hat at the end of the regular season instead of a Cleveland hat.

Right now everybody on the planet wants DeLambert because both Curry & Chandler are a lock to be restricted to Chicago, he's going to get signed to a ridiculous contract...it may be worthwhile for Cleveland.

I think Cleveland should absolutely get one of the premier SGs. If you dont have perimeter threats the defense will just collapse in on LeBron. He'll still score, but Cleveland will keep on losing.

Until Cleveland gets perimeter threats, they'll never be Miami or Phoenix, and they don't have the big man talent to be a Detroit or Spurs. Right now, they're like the Bulls w/ MJ before PJ got there, Michael helplessly tossing up points in losses.

-The Cleveland Cavaliers Management should allowed at all cost re-signing Z to the max because he's 30 years old and on a decline. He improved his numbers this season because he was healthy for the most part but I don't see him improving much next season. For his height of 7'4" and 260 lbs and yet not being able to averaged at least 10 rpg so is shameless

-Ray Allen is 29/30, and the same concept applies (look above)

-Joe Johnson has proved being worthy enough and Michael Redd shooting abilities are a big plusses. The Cavs should/would/must do their best to get either one of these 2 players. They are both young and still developing. If they get either one, the odds of resigning Lebron James after the 2007 season are much greater.

Im begging the Cleveland GM PLEASE! if u cant get another player that can help LeBron, TRADE HIM!!!!!

LeBron needs a Pippen type player, a Jax type coach and a early 90s Bulls type supporting cast.

Sun May 22, 2005 12:13 pm

maybe then can start young and fresh like signing samuel dalembert which saves them money. then after they can sign someone like joe johnson and a pg they need.

Perhaps...I don't like the idea of following a blueprint with "this generation's (insert name here)" substituted for the original players though. There's no question LeBron needs some more help, a coach who can utilise his players (or at least most of them) to their full potential and knows a thing or two about winning and (get your "broken record" remarks ready) ownership and the front office to know when to butt out and how to bring the right personnel on board.

Mon May 23, 2005 6:28 pm

- get Luke Jackson healthy (Y) don't write him off yet....he will be a nice 6th man if he gets the chance....
- if they can get a SG, in this order: Joe Johnson, Michael Redd then Ray Allen....all might be return to their respective teams....Allen is probably most likely available....
- get rid of McInnis....new PG
- resign Z and Gooden....
- keep Anderson Vareajo healthy :P
- a little more scoring punch off bench....

Mon May 23, 2005 9:15 pm

Get Daniels, Swift, Dalembert and JJ/Redd and let Z go

Mon May 23, 2005 10:33 pm

Let Z go and get Dalembert

Sign a SG that can hit 3's and play D....not necessarily Redd, JJ or Ray Allen

Get a PG...someone that can shoot and pass....Antonio Daniels?

Tue May 24, 2005 12:48 am

Oh man that would be sick if they could get either Allen or Redd ( I'd prefer Allen by a mile though).

I really hope they'll get at least one of these top players, even if that means getting rid of Ilgauskas.

Tue May 24, 2005 5:26 am

I saw Mobley on best damn sports show and he said he was opting out of his contract. I think he would be a good fit with cavs.

Wed May 25, 2005 4:03 am

i think ray allen would be the better fit then redd. allen does have the playoff/big game experience and has shown he can coexist with other stars on the team. also he's not one dimensional like redd. he is one of the better ball handling SG's in the league and attacks the rim

allen's big problem is his want for a max contract but teams don't like giving those to players heading into their 30's. allen could probably get that big contract but it would be a less desirable situation then seattle (assuming the sonics keep mcmillan and most of the current cast). espn insider had a decent article about this....

resign Z and go for mobley!

Wed May 25, 2005 10:34 am

Isn't Mobley older than Ray?

I agree with getting Daniels & DeLambert. AD's #s don't tell the whole story, his hustle infects the entire team, and the guy has rock solid confidence. Doesn't back down vs anyone.

Wed May 25, 2005 12:26 pm

actually allen is a few months older according to yahoo sports
