Shaq not pleased with Buss' weight-loss remark
May 5, 2005

MIAMI (AP) -- Nearly a year after the trade, the verbal jousting between Shaquille O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers is still going strong.

One day after Lakers owner Jerry Buss said O'Neal found motivation for losing weight only after being traded by Los Angeles to Miami, the Heat's All-Star center took issue with the remark.

``I didn't need motivation,'' O'Neal said. ``I needed a real owner. ... I needed a real owner like Micky Arison. You can quote me on it.''

Buss also said he doesn't regret trading O'Neal to Miami.

``And I don't regret him losing money and his not making the playoffs,'' O'Neal said.

On Wednesday, Buss said O'Neal was not willing to get into shape when he played for the Lakers. O'Neal, who played at an estimated 370 pounds during his final season in Los Angeles, is down to about 325 in Miami.

``It seems that the motivation for him to lose weight was to trade him,'' Buss said Wednesday. ``I suspect if I knew he was going to lose 60 pounds, I might have made a different decision.''

Hmm... the interview with Buss was also interesting, he said that "no one is untouchable"... I still struggle to understand why he'd say that, the last thing the team needs is for Kobe to throw a hissy fit and demand a trade coming off a season where he was fairly unimpressive.

Either way, Shaq can hardly deny that the trade was a motivation for him.. as a Laker in the last offseason all you heard from him was "I want a trade" with a Big Mac in his hand, then he gets traded and he's like "IM BRINGING A ChAMPIONSHIP TO MIAMI!" while eating Subway and drinking Diet Pepsi. It's a bit annoying, but I guess that's what ego can do to people.

Wow... 370 pounds at 7' 1"

Talk about overweight... 50 kgr above normal... way to go Shaq Daddy... too bad he lost weight, he was more of a sight last year... although I doubt his ankles could have taken that weight for more than 50 games , now at 33...

Although the guy is HUGE... I saw a pic of him at the ASW next to AI, with Shaq wearing a suit and a fedora hat, while Iverson was in street wear. It was like the pimp daddy had brought his son to meet his girls, or something

As for his comments, well, I'd love to warch Shaq team up with Sir Charles and Ernie when he retires... Mother of all TV shows!!! (Y)

He lost the rim destruction due to the NBA making a "No Hanging or Swinging" rule about the rim not because his weight.

They made that rule because of him. He would break a rim then the game would be delayed for 45 mins while the wheel another out.

Shaq + Charles + Ernie + Kenny Smith + Magic Johnson?
And we all know that Shaq loves to degrade Kenny Smith. Man, that would be the best thing since...rice or something. Maybe they have to take out Magic Johnson though...might be too much money. But then Magic hardly does much in that show.
Heck Charles + Shaq only would be pretty entertaining.

Buss is such a ***.

He's trying to say he traded Shaq because he was overweight? Why didn't he trade him the last 3 years then?

The entire world knows he traded Shaq to keep Kobe who was a free agent. He's pretty sad if he thinks he can convince anyeone it was a "weight" problem.

Kudos to Shaq for getting the last laugh.

Or too much weight for the studio. Just imagine Shaq, Magic and Sir Charles together...

Even if Buss's remarks are somewhat on the money, the question has to be raised: why was Shaq so unmotivated in Los Angeles? Surely it couldn't possibly have been due to differences with management and indeed, Buss himself...

i suppose it has something to do with the atmosphere and environment.
Jerry West brought him to Lakers and that guy got fired.
PJ brought them to 3 championship rings and got fired too..
So i guess he has decided to leave before getting traded.
He felt himself as less important and not much needed there in Lakers.
this is what i feel bout what shaq's thinkin..

Shaq & Barkley would be interesting, even more so since they had a little scuffle, hahah Barkley got Shaq to the ground. :D
