No, I don't have anything other than speculation. Considering the fact he's remained somewhat underrated throughout his career, I think it simply boils down to a few misconceptions (all he could do was dunk, he didn't do anything else significant, etc), his teams' lack of success and the way his career fizzled out after the trade to the Clippers. Is that justified? Not at all in my opinion. But it might explain why he's not headed to the HOF this time around.
Any other thoughts as to why Nique won't be enshrined this year?

That should kind of answer your question Andrew. Honestly, Wilkins has been overlooked for quite some time; he was notoriously excluded from the NBA's 50 greatest list. He was a great scorer and his Hawk teams were fairly successful but like a Mitch Richmond, the lack of a Finals appearance hurts his chances to be recognized as a great player.

Mitch Richmond made the finals and got a ring with the Lakers when they beat the Nets i believe
Tue Apr 12, 2005 9:12 pm
But Richmond won a ring on Shaq and Kobe's team... not as the main man. The thing with Nique is that he played in MJ's shadow... and no attention was shone on him and yes... he is known as a scorer and never lead his team to the NBA finals... on stats, he is great player but on achievements... he hasnt done as much as some players but I still think he deserves a spot i nthe HOF....
remember him vs. bird in the ECF???

I suggest either buying or hiring a history of the NBA video/DVD and you'll find out....one of greatest showmen, dunkers and offensive forces of all-time....I know he won at least one dunk contest, maybe two....he had a great matchup against Jordan which Jordan won, although I don't think Jordan deserved to win
'Nique vs. Bird Conference Finals matchup was superb....
I think the reason he gets forgotten is that....
- he didn't play in a main market (Atlanta)
- he didn't win a title
- he got traded to the Clippers for Danny Manning
- he left the NBA for a bit and went to Europe (Greece I believe)
- when he returned to NBA he wasn't the same explosive player and finished his career as more of a jump shooter (Boston and San Antonio)
- he played at the same time as Jordan, Bird, Magic, Isiah (also related to not playing in a main/big market)
alll these factors seem to lead to him getting forgotten, however it is a crying shame....

It's kind of weird, but for me, when I was growing up and enjoying basketball, I've always heard about Dominique Wilkins. Maybe because he was a big time dunker, but I keep hearing about what a good scorer he was, and the duels with MJ and that big one with Bird. I don't know why he is overlooked as he is, but he definitely deserves to be in the hall of fame.

who cares, the HOF is a crock of shit. Everyone with half a brain cell knows that Nique was an elite player in the NBA for a long time and he doesn't need to be inducted to the HOF to show that.

Then why is Reggie Miller considered a lock for the HOF?
Wed Apr 13, 2005 5:33 am
because he is teh second best 3 point shooter of all time, if not teh best.

who is Nique?

Damn man! Even I know Nique and I'm 12!
Wed Apr 13, 2005 5:50 am
maybe he just didnt know the nickname 'nique...
still pathetic but maybe if andrew had said dominique wilkins he would have known
Wed Apr 13, 2005 6:02 am
yea..
i thought there's a rookie called nique..
i know who domonique wilkins is..
but only known him as a good dunker...
not sure bout a defender...
he didn't play like he used to be playin when playin for orlando, or spurs..
his bro was worse than him..
never like his bro.

couldn't have said it better myself. the fact that a lot of people KNOW that nique got snubbed is just a testament to how great of a player he was

That's become popular opinion, but has anyone actually been inducted whom one couldn't honestly make a case for inducting? There's been questionable inductees and snubs based on some weird logic (whatever it might be for each individual), but I don't think anywhere near a majority of the guys in there are terrible decisions by the selection committee.

Agreed, but seeing as we're a society that likes to honour outstanding individuals it's appropriate to recognise a player like Dominique in such a manner, even if it's not necessary.

Interesting article about the subject on Fox:

Andrew, I just think they wanted to induct all the deserving coaches with one loud swoop, they just wanted to get Boheim and Calhoun before someone like 'Nique.
Thu Apr 14, 2005 6:27 am
putting college coaches in the hall before nique is insane. i dont know wtf they were thinking. i have always compared dominique to barry sanders. an amazing talent that never had a team build around him. this guy has been getting the shaft his entire career. he definetly deserves to be in and most likly he will find his way in, but its still insulting that he is not a first balot.
Thu Apr 14, 2005 10:42 am
The notion that this is the year of the coach makes sense, but I don't agree with the decision if that is indeed the case. Hopefully he gets in eventually but as Sauru said, he should have been first ballot. He was still too significant a player in his era to be snubbed this way.
That article also has some interesting thoughts about Patrick Ewing. I didn't think he was that terrible a defender or for that matter a completely terrible passer. And that jumpshot that Rosen refers to was actually quite an effective move.
Fri Apr 15, 2005 6:42 am
i gotta say, i didnt much like that article at all. it seems to me that the guy was just saying stuff to get people going. like andrew said, the entire thing on ewing was off imo.

Though there may be politics involved in the HOF election, I just don't understand why he's not in. The easiest explanation is that "he was just a scorer". Everybody says that he couldn't do anything but score. So what?? You gotta take people for what they are. I bet they'll insert Ben Wallace in the HOF because of his defense. So why not get 'Nique in there too, not because he couldn't do this or couldn't do that, but because of what he was: A terrific scorer and a huge offensive force.
Sun Apr 17, 2005 2:15 pm
Furthermore, he was a significant player in his era and his teams were moderately successful.
Tue Apr 19, 2005 6:33 am
yeah, and any success the hawks had was thanks to him. they never built a good team around him.
