Unfortunate news. Kemp was having a decent season after being buried on the Blazers' bench the last two seasons. Hopefully he co-operates and gets back on the court where he can still make a contribution, and doesn't wear out his NBA welcome a la Isaiah Rider.

On a sidenote, I read that the use of cocaine and LSD calls for immediate dismissal from the NBA, though players can appeal the expulsion after 2 years. I guess Kemp is fortunate that he voluntarily entered rehabilitation back in 2001, else he wouldn't be getting all these second chances.

Kemp explains suspension as "misunderstanding"
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Orlando Magic forward Shawn Kemp believes he will be exonerated after being suspended on Tuesday for violating the terms of the NBA/NBA Players Association Anti-Drug Program, according to a published report.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that the suspension was nothing more than a misunderstanding. Kemp was out of town for the All-Star break and rescheduled his test, which was originally scheduled to take place last Thursday. The rescheduled date was for Wednesday and Kemp maintains the test will come back clean.

Kemp’s suspension began with Tuesday's 92-83 victory over the New Jersey Nets, but he believes that he will be cleared to play Thursday night in Detroit.

In the past few years though, Kemp has battled substance abuse problems and entered a drug rehabilitation center for cocaine use in April of 2001 towards the end of his first year with Portland. He returned last season, but was suspended for five games in February for failing to comply with his aftercare program.

I read that over at ESPN.com. A little more encouraging, hopefully it's cleared up and Kemp will be in action as early as possible.
