The players themselves did up until 1980, then the voting was put in the hands of the writers and broadcasters. Guys who think that, simply because they eyeball 100 games every season, they really know what's what. Guys who can't tell an ice pick from a Kaiser roll. Who couldn't diagram the most elementary play. Who don't know on any given sequence which players are supposed to zig and which are supposed to zag. Who can't see past the numbers
Interesting article...specially the part abt Doc Rivers COY award.

LOL at the EBAY suggestion:
what's sickening is when players are interviewed about their MVP award they all whine at the same thing, its the team that deserves, it's not about individual awards but the playoffs or the champoinships, blah blah blah etc. etc.......
i mean why can't they just say "HAHA I OWNED YA'LL SUCKA's"

Because... theres something called a script and players have to do it to teach young people not be cocky... unless ur a genuine nice guy like Grant Hill
nah... its actually called being a good sport!

Rosen brings up some valid points about the award selections, but as long as they're handed out at the end of the regular seasons, we'll always talk about the "real MVP" or the "real COY". There have been questionable selections over the years, but I can't think of one that I personally have felt was a truly terrible selection with no merit whatsoever.

The NHL has both awards, so both the players and the writers have their say. Usually its the same guy. Writers seem to be better at choosing an MVp than players. Most players choice MVPs in the NHL are chosen based on reputation among their peers, as opposed to what kind of year they had. In my opinion, they should have a small team of writers and all 30 GMs do the vote. Myabe even add some past MVPs (Jordan, Malone (either one), Bird, Barkley, Erving) and add them to the voting 'jury.'

the only real value of MVP is fatter contracts for the player and a higher trade value. other than that, i don't think it means very much.

Don't compare anything with the NHL.
