Shaq's Godfather Reference: Apt?

Postby Andrew on Wed Mar 16, 2005 7:26 pm

Checking up on today's boxscores and reading through the recaps over on NBA.com, I came across this interesting analogy Shaq made between the Godfather trilogy and the star players he's teamed up with during his career:

"The difference between those three is in 'The Godfather' trilogy," he said. "One is Alfredo, who's never ready for me to hand it over to him. One is Sonny, who will do whatever it takes to be the man. And one is Michael, who, if you watch the trilogy, the Godfather hands it over to Michael. So I have no problem handing it to Dwyane." (Source)

As much as I respect him, enjoy watching him play and vote for him on the All-Star ballot, I've always felt that Shaq made too big a deal of the situation with Penny in Orlando. It always seemed to me that Shaq should shoulder some of the blame, having bolted to LA despite Orlando being a team of the future, one that seemed destined to win a title (or titles) sooner or later). It seemed as though Shaq was more unwilling to share than Penny.

It's never shaq's fault though  . Thats why alot of fans dont realise exactly how good he is.. with the situation in orlando, shaq wanted all the glory (he became upset that magic management thought of penny as an equally important peice) but couldnt accept responsability for the team losing, and he bolted to la.

Shaq is one of the greats, but he is begining to sound like wilt chamberlin with some of his comments. somtimes, you dont have to say anything, and its easy to kick someone when they are down. would shaq be saying these things if penny was still an all star? or if the lakers were leading their division?

It's a matter of time before Dwyane starts getting on Shaq's nerves aswell. If the Miami Heat were to win an NBA Championship on the back of some huge Dwyane Wade performances, Shaq's ego would be shattered and that's when he'd start talking again.

Either that or he'll just ask for another contract extension for 100million a year.

maybe he should go start writing rap albums again and producing poor kid flicks :?

Well he is supposed to be the MDE...I guess theirs more than one reason why hes referred to as MDE.

I hope the Heat dont give him some humungous contract.....he earns a ridiculously high amount....and what does he do with his money(well he gives to charity I guess)...but he also goes giving birthdays gifts to Donald Trumph stuff like Limo's :?

Anyway lets see what happens....I hope he doesnt start another drama duo in Miami with Wade....hes doin quite well he doesnt need Shaq to start becoming bitch-ish.

I actually like to hear Shaq speak. Half the shit he says is so stupid it's funny. I think this Godfather reference is great......

and to say that D.Wade is going to get on Shaq's nerves I disagree. His Career is winding down and he knows it. D.Wade leads the team in scoring now and he does not mind. D.Wade hit that big shot against the Knicks last night and Shaq praised him. I think he sees Wade as a way to extend his career.

Shaq talks a lot of crap. He says stuff on the spot, in the spur of the moment, he toys with the media & enjoys doing so. The media needs something to write about & he gives it to them.

Simple as that. Don't take anything Shaq says as something final.

As I've always said, shut the fuck up & play the game.

I'd go with something like " Say whatever the hell you want, just win the damn game".

That's what Shaq has been doing throughout his career , so he can talk all he wants.

Sometimes you earn this right throught superiority...

I agree with Dweaver with the "Don't talk shit when you can't back it up." Shaq can back it up. He leaves the Lakers -- they fall. He joins the Heat -- look at 'em now.

But more importantly, he keeps the NBA relevant. He is the reason for this topic's existence. I'm not going to go out and say, Oh, he shouldn't have said that; that wasn't cool, because this is Shaq and Kobe. It's just as much as a soap opera as it is basketball -- whether we like it or not. And in my opinion, it's entertaining.

I'm not gonna go into criticism and say that was wrong, because I like it. And I'll be watching this Thursday.

Right now he might, but as I said it's early days. Just wait until Wade starts completely overshadowing Shaq, no matter what stage in his career it is his ego wouldn't be able to take it. He could be 50 years old and scoring 5ppg but he'd still want to be "the man" wherever he goes. Remember what he was saying before the season started? He was basically demanding that players give him the ball on every posession, if they were in practice he would pull players aside and tell them how they could run the play better, which roughly translated means pass the ball to me. A fair few sites had that article up so I won't be the only one who saw it.

Also, if his main thoughts were with the team and not himself, what kind of contract extension do you think he'd want? He's earning $30,000,000 a season which is completely cap crippling. If he starts whinging if Miami wont give him a gigantic contract extension, then you know he hasn't changed at all. I used to be a huge Shaq fan, I still am to an extent but I don't really like it when players think they're bigger than the game. No matter what anyone else says, Shaq isn't bigger than the NBA. The league was good before Shaq showed up, the league will be good after Shaq has gone. Either way, he does come out with some funny stuff too.

I cant wait for the day JR Smith dunks right on Shaq's face :x ...

anyhow Jae's rite....no player is bigger than the league.....hes a great player no doubt but did Jordan ever say things like Shaq has...NO....and I think Jordan was way closer to being bigger than the league(prolly he was)than Shaq will ever be.....n he never bitched abt teammates or his franchise...again its unfair to compare players to Jordan cause hes too unique.....but if Shaq demands a 300 million dollar extension.....hes a bigger dumbass than Babcock, Thorn and Sterling put together. :x

Michael has bitched about teammates but not to the poinit of dissing them so badly in the media... But I guess what makes Shaq great is that he usually talks the talk and also walks the walk. Alot of respect in that aspect.

actually it's the opposite. he would be a better person if he could handle his issues with other players behind the scenes or at least not use the media to outlet some of his frustrations.

jordan did indeed punch kerr in a practice but apologized to kerr. and he did verbally lash out on teammates he didn't believe in but for most part it was kept behind closed doors

How about Penny and Kobe stop being such God-damn pussies, and talk some shit back. Who remembers the training camp where Kobe dissed Shaq about starting the season out-of-shape and shit? (Was it this year? I forget.) That was great. That was entertaining. Not only could we talk about Shaq's comments, but also Kobe's.

Really, my point is that if they actually cared for these comments, they'd talk shit back. But I'd be surprised if they actually care. It's just Shaq being Shaq. Kobe's gonna come out tonight and drive through that brick wall.

I wanna hear Shaq talk shit.

And I wanna see Kobe dunk on him.

Check out a piece of this article. He won't have to whine. It's already in the books.

"The plans already are being laid for O'Neal to opt out of the last year of his contract this summer, then sign a four-year extension with the Heat. That would keep him in South Florida through the 2008-09 season. O'Neal's agent, Perry Rogers, told the Miami Herald: "There is an absolute love affair between Miami and Shaq. Why would (he) not want to finish his career here?" Bryant and the Lakers will learn the depth of that feeling tonight, in what could be as close to a playoff game as they come. "I've got five beautiful children, a wife, I'm living a great life," O'Neal said. "I live on the water. If you had that view ... nothing left to complain about." Los Angeles Daily News

I don't agree with bashing your teamates(or ex teamates) in the media but Shaq does it in a way that is funny. That is all this is..ENTERTAINMENT!! I wanna see people talk shit on and off the court. It's fun to watch. Shaq and Kobe know exactly what they are doing. RATINGS. None of you guys fans or not should take it personal.
