Lakers did it again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fri Feb 07, 2003 12:58 pm

They won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kobe and Shaq did what they had to do in the New York. They are now only two games behind the Rockets.

Fri Feb 07, 2003 3:00 pm

also the orlando magic is out of the top 8 in the east,
kobe averaging 40pts for the last 5games.....whos better now?
(referring to the tmac vs kobe talks lolz)

Good run before the allstar break. They finally get to .500. Kobe will win MVP if he keeps this up.

Fri Feb 07, 2003 4:19 pm

damn, even if warriors would reach .500 they couldnt qualify in west conference.
does it counts being on the east side of Bay Bridge?

Fri Feb 07, 2003 9:08 pm

To be precise, the Lakers are just 1.5 games behind the Rockets for the 8th spot in the West. Houston is going to have to snap that 2 game losing streak if they want to stay ahead of the Los Angeles, because if the Lakers get into the top 8, I don't see them dropping back again.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 3:14 am

and now dallas are shittin in there pants lol
especially if lakers finish 8th, dallas will cry!! lol

nah kobe is playing like the MVP, even though i think KG will get it if the t-wolves can get a lil further into the playoffs
but i hope kobe can get mvp, it will be cool

42,38,40,35,46 in his last 5 games...........WOW!!

Kobe's playing great, his third quarter last night was very impressive...but not the fourth, that was horrible. The Lakers only scored what, 14 points in the fourth quarter?

Anyway, as for the MVP talk, the MVP award is awarded before the playoffs begin, therefore how far the T-Wolves get into the playoffs doesn't have any impact on Garnett being awarded the MVP trophy. Kobe's making a great push for it, though...

Sat Feb 08, 2003 6:31 am

because kobe sat for most of the fourth, having a rest coz they had a 20pnt lead, thats just more evidence on who is really leading the lakers and another fact for just why he could win mvp.

i believe kobe had 6pnts in the crunch also to get the lakers the victory.

and are you sure the mvp trophy is awarded before the playofs, i can swear i saw tim duncan recieve it in the lakers-spurs series.
and also allen iverson of 2001 recieve it in the semis also

Sat Feb 08, 2003 8:49 am

pfft...kobe :x ...sprewell rocked the place :P

Yeah, they choose the MVP before the playoffs start, but they award it during the playoffs b/c of rating reasons...or something like that.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 10:10 am

Yeah it was a good 4th quarter for the Knicks, they made a great comeback but just couldn't finish it.

There's no proof that they do that bfore the Playoffs start cause if they do, the news would come out just after they get the winner. Nobody can resist keeping on secret news like that. I don't think any of the awards are chosen bfore the season ends, unless you are one of the journalist that participates in the voting and you are just revealing yourself, I would have to believe they don't.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 11:09 am

BEFORE the PLAYOFFS, but AFTER the SEASON...sheesh...

Sat Feb 08, 2003 11:10 am

there's just a snap of 3 days between season & playoffs, sure they can compile all the info for the awards, but that would mean they are doing nothing else but that.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 11:38 am

The MVP award is based on regular season performance (hence Tim Duncan winning the award last season, despite the Spurs being eliminated in the second round). The presentation takes place during the playoffs, mainly because there's a higher amount of viewers.

Also, the MVP is presented to the player the night of a game. I seem to remember back in the day, a day was set aside for the presentation of the MVP in a press conference type setup (which reminds me of the infamous footage of David Stern dropping the MVP award before he could present it to Magic Johnson).

Sat Feb 08, 2003 11:47 am

Yes, I know it is based on regular season performance, but are the votes taking place before the playoffs start when the award is given just around the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs?

As far as I remember, every monday or every other monday after the playoffs start, the awards start to be known. Don't think they know the awards and wait that long to let the people know, especially when the media is the one voting.

It would have to be early in the playoffs (I believe early in the first round), as they could not know whether the player who is to receive the award will be out of the playoffs. If they had waited until the conference finals last year, Tim Duncan would not have been around to receive the award.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 11:59 am

t-mac will wint eh mvp, i think that he is the only player in nba who has a complete game, he rebounds, drives, outside shot, in side, blocks, assits, everything......... i think that kobe's 3s and spree's is one time thing, sometimes you ust get on a roll, i would understand if it was person or pja, but kobe??? spreee

Sat Feb 08, 2003 11:59 am

it is given approx. late 2nd round or early 3rd round, however with that statement you would be saying the same way that the MVP should be in the playoffs. I know it is difficult to choose someone who didn't get his team to the playoffs, but we shouldn't take away the possibilities.

T-Mac will not get the MVP over Duncan or Garnett, so just keep dreaming about it.

The presentation of the award differs year to year. Sometimes, it is awarded during the conference finals, other times it is awarded earlier (last year being an example). The votes are most likely tabulated early in the playoffs, since playoff success is not taken into account.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 12:27 pm

conference finals?, well, you know well the series could be short as it could be long, Conference finals are what? 3 round?, right. early 3rd round is the time perfect, if the 2nd round was long, it could be late 2nd round as well. Now, do you think the votes are made bfore the 1st game of the playoffs start and they wait all that time (approx. 4 weeks or more) to let the people know who they've chosen as the MVP?

Sat Feb 08, 2003 12:40 pm

Well, if they don't tabulate the votes earlier than the second round, why was Duncan presented with the award during a second round game?

Sat Feb 08, 2003 12:44 pm

It might be earlier than the 2nd Round Andrew, but how earlier?, If the player didn't get to the 2nd Round they just mail the trophy, lol. or send an email invitation to one of the games. We haven't seen that case yet, when Robinson was chosen was earlier 3rd round, they go in order, they give that award after the manager of the year, after the rookie of the year and so on. They do give the awards every week, not all at once. But I don't think they vote bfore the playoffs start and keep that on secret, I do believe they take each week to the votes and compile them and announce that on the next monday, they can announce it and then later the award is given to the player in any of his games.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 12:49 pm

Certainly not in the days between the regular season and playoffs, but by the start of the second round and no later, the MVP votes would be tabulated and the winner ready to be announced.

Sat Feb 08, 2003 1:17 pm

Dallas' worst nightmare is facing LA in the first round. I read that GM Mitch Kupchak is looking to make a deal for a third scorer.
