Why do NBA players whine so much?

Sun Feb 27, 2005 2:48 pm

Everytime a call is made against them by a referee, they act like it's the end of the world.

Sun Feb 27, 2005 2:57 pm

Not all of them, I mean, um....
Some MUCHO MAS than others!

Take for example Dikembe Mutombo!! Wow, has he ever made a foul??? :?:

Sun Feb 27, 2005 2:59 pm

The same reason normal people who play basketball whine so much, they feel the call was wrong. Not every player does that, I know guys I play with who do that, and guys that don't, I myself don't whine to refs, but it's not a general thing as in every player does it.

Sun Feb 27, 2005 3:08 pm

I whine when my team gets a foul. If Im the captain i will argue as many bad calls as tyhey come... its just life. Every player wnats the game and ref to be fair!

Dont hate on them! There are players who are good guys then there are the ones who are cheap!

Hate the cheap guys!

Sun Feb 27, 2005 3:17 pm

but isn't it a lost cause? rarely do referees reverse their call plus the league is always gonna side with them

Sun Feb 27, 2005 3:21 pm

Yeah but the point is to make the ref feel bad so they dont miss the next call! So it could save ur game!

Sun Feb 27, 2005 3:50 pm

I argue a LOT when playing for the school.
Some asshole told me: "If you don't shut up, you go out..." :(

Sun Feb 27, 2005 4:02 pm

scrubs hav no use in arguing. but Sit is right its about the future calls. often i c ppl who dont speak (like nowitzki) arguing aggressively to a ref... he knows that the ruling wont be changed and he doesnt expect it to... but he wants to let the ref kno that hes aware of the refs "mistake" and is gonna be watchin out next time. think about it. as a ref that puts pressure on next time wen u hav to make the same call... u dont wanna go against an nba star.

its not jus a mental thing tho... i could also be that the player just wants to let the ref kno wats going on downlow if he didnt seem to see it (such as rough foul, pushing, elbows...etc).

Sun Feb 27, 2005 4:26 pm

One time I got ejected for screaming "asshole" in front of a terrible, terrible, terrible referee. I wasn't allowed on the court till after the game, and I tried to apologize to him, but he wouldn't look at me or acknowledge my apology. He informed the league, and I got suspended for one game. That was the only time I blew up at a referee though, but other than that, I stay pretty calm or roll my eyes. It's really hard to control your emotions in a intense competitive environment when the referees can make or break the game. Maybe that's why so many NBA players whine..

Sun Feb 27, 2005 5:33 pm

I just like in pick up/street games, some people never call foul even if they get clobered, some may call a foul even if you breathe on them.

Sun Feb 27, 2005 5:52 pm

Yea, whenever I play with my brother he's always telling me to call fouls, but I don't like calling weak fouls in pickup games, I mean even if it's a foul, I won't call it unless it's really blatant.

On the other hand, I have a friend who calls a foul when he uses his off arm to clear his path, he calls a foul on everything, it's annoying really.

Mon Feb 28, 2005 2:44 am

Tel him to be a man :P Or make up a game with no fouls called (Y)

Mon Feb 28, 2005 3:45 am

there is not review system in nba

ive never seen an nba call reversed

i once though saw a play in baseball reversed red sox vs yankees in like a regular season game a few years ago there was a questionable play at sencond base if red sox player was safe or out he was ruled out but the manager argued with him and they went to commericail and they watched a reply of it on a tv somewhere and reversed it

i dont see nba getting a rreview system though

Mon Feb 28, 2005 4:12 am

I've seen calls reversed many times, if 2 refs disagree, all the refs meet, and they decide what the right call is together, so calls can be reversed, but not from players whining, only when their's conflict between 2 refs.

Mon Feb 28, 2005 5:13 am

i never ever complain to a ref about a call unless i know it was the wrong call. but instead of making a scene, i go up to him/her and talk about it and calmly make my case about the call. it works much better then throwing your hands up and complaining.

and i ref basketball games and i ump baseball in the summer and let me tell you... theres nothing that pisses me off more then an 8th grade kid who thinks hes the greatest basketball player on earth complaining about every call. if anything i will look to call more on him.

Mon Feb 28, 2005 5:14 am

whining about calls can also mean 2 things

1. the player cares about the game/outcome

2. the player isn't playing hard enough and is looking for a bail out.

Mon Feb 28, 2005 5:19 am

of course a player cares about the outcome, but crying about every call isnt going to change anything.

Very insightful! I never thought about the two differences, but you got it before I could even think about that.

I just think it's funny that in college games, when a player disagrees with a call, he confronts the referee and asks for an explanation.

But in the NBA, the players over-exaggerate about things.

wat did u tell to him??? :)

i whine a lot when i do a clean block, and those old refs calls it as a foul

Mon Feb 28, 2005 8:01 am

I never complain but the black guys on my team complain all the time. Even if it's an obvious foul I think they do it just to try, you know? Maybe they can get the ref to change it. 8-)

Mon Feb 28, 2005 8:06 am

I basically never complain to the ref, but sometimes I'll whisper something if I think they're calling cheap fouls over and over again. But the refs normally call more fouls against other teams, because our district has teams that like to reach a lot and some refs really penalize them for it. I've seen one kid get a technical on another team, but that's the only technical I've seen.

where i am from you always respect a players call. you might argue with him about it but you respec it, for awhile. if the same player makes 2-3 calls in a row that everyone clearly knows is a lame call then no matter what call he makes for the rest of the game he wont get it and play resumes. i hardly ever call my fouls and i only do so if its to my shooting arm or head, otherwise i let it go. people who do this always get thier calls because if you hardly call and actually make a call then people just give you the ball without to much complaint, but those people who constantly call fouls have a hard time even getting on the court as people dont even want them on thier team.

to answer the original question as to why nba players, or anyone really, complains about calls i believe its all about pride. nba players, mainly the big money players, have been stars thier entire life. these players get blocked or stripped and in thier heads it has to be a foul cause there is no way so and so is good enough to do that to me. this holds more true on the playground. when some players know there is people watching the game and that person gets blocked or something they instantly yell foul to save face. then they start saying " he didnt do shit but foul me, he cant guard me without hacking me". these players are damn annoying but what can ya do. so basicly its all about pride.
