True, but Najera has on Ovr rating of 50 and is due about 4m a year for the next 4 seasons, while Campbell is 4.5m for this year and then he's gone...

What i forgot to mention in the original post ( but it's on the thread title ) is that I'm planning to rebuild the team.. So the main focus should be to just grind out this season ( I'm still gonna play the games... ) and make the playoffs in 2005-2006 after resigning J-rich and adding quality FAs in the summer of 2005. So I think that cap management should be of prime importance here. Plus Biedrins can pick up a thing or 2 from all those veteran centers, hehe...

If you have a better suggestion about off-loading Foyle ( I mean, 6.5 MILLION DOLLARS??? Somebody shoot that damn GM! ) I'd be glad to hear it.... The only way the Bobcats would accept a trade with him involved IRL would be a trady with the talent level in their favor...

In an out-of-the-blue, surprising move, Las Vegas entrepreneur and casino tycoon Lance Jerametrius Donovan, assumed ownership of four, yes four, Carifornia sport franchises in all the major sports. In an unprecedented lightning strike, the once UCLA graduate in mechanical engineering, cashed out the incredible amount of 2,9 billion US Dollars to aid him in the purchase of the Golden State Warriors of the NBA, the Oakland Raiders of the NFL, the Oakland Athletics of the MLB and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks of the NHL.

When confronted about this, Mr. Donovan replied that all he could say at the moment was that he was thrilled to be a part of the Sport industry and that he would hold a press conference tomorrow in Oakland so that all lingering questions might be answered. One thing he did reveal, though, was that he would be assuming executive duties as General Manager in one of the franchises as that had been his childhood dream.

Lance Donovan, owner and self-appointed GM of the Golden State Warriors, today made his first shuffle of personnel in the team. In a surprising move, 2layers left Oakland to be replaced by2new ones. In detail, Donovan shipped newly acquired PG Derek Fisher along with SG young prospect Mickael Pietrus to the Los Angeles Lakers, in order to acquire last year’s second round draft pick SF Luke Walton along with NBA veteran C Vlade Divac. The really startling thing in this whole scenario is that both Fisher and Divac never had the chance to play for their teams after being signed as free agents in the summer. The reasons behind this trade are rumored to be Jerry West’s fervor to have Fish return in LA along with Donovan’s wish to strengthen the team’s inside game and get rid of Fisher’s contract. Jerry West, who recently returned to the Lakers’ GM sport after a successful stint with the Grizzlies, is said to be delighted with the move while in Oakland the first talk of Donovan’s managerial inexperience have come to the surface.

Another trading extravaganza by Golden State’s GM took place late last night. Donovan off-loaded 3 of his players to the Charlotte Bobcats and acquired 3 new faces. In detail, C Adonal Foyle, PF Cliff Robinson along with SF Calbert Cheaney will find themselves playing for the NBA’s newest expansion team while Golden State will greet the new faces of SG Jason Kapono, rookie SG Bernard Robinson and SF Theron Smith. It has become evident from this move that Donovan’s main goal is to get rid of the highly paid players so that he can have increased maneuverability in next summer’s free agent market. Off-loading Adonal Foyle and his 6.5 million per years must have been a real relief for him, but one cannot help but wonder what the Bobcats were thinking getting him. Nevertheless, losing veteran PF Robinson could prove detrimental to the team’s success this year but there is a feeling in the city of Oakland that their new GM is more interesting in a long-term project to rebuild the team rather than instant success.

The Warriors proceeded with another swap of personnel today, this time a one-off deal with the New Jersey Nets. PF Eduardo Najera of Mexico was shipped to the East Coast in exchange for veteran center Elden Campbell. Najera joined Derek Fisher in the list of people who never had the chance to play for the Warriors before being sent away on trades. Campbell story this pre-season is far more exciting although I doubt he shares the same opinion. Originally starting with the Detroit Pistons, Campbell was sent to Utah in exchange for PG Carlos Arroyo in mid-September but was waived soon after to make room in the cap. New Jersey immediately jumped in to acquire him but in the end they could not pass up the opportunity of acquiring a younger PF in Najera so they shipped him to Oakland and Golden State. This trade is another indications that the Warriors are indeed in a rebuilding stage with their focus being on the future rather than this year. They seem to be in a good course, at least cap-wise , as they are already 7m below maximum and will see 20 m worth of contracts expiring in summer 2005.

With roughly a week to go before the Warriors tip-off their season, the team proceeded with some finalizing roster alterations, waiving newly acquired SF Theron Smith and signing with the minimum PG Troy Bell and SF/PF Pina Manuwaii.
Bell, chosen 16th overall in the 2003 draft by Memphis was waived earlier this month after failing to live up to his first-round status. Considered a talented shoot-first, pass-later guard, he has a lot of potential at the age of 23 and will be eager to prove that he was not one of Jerry West’s few poor draft choices.
Manuwaii, a native of Hawaii and graduate of Hawaii University, is a 6’ 8” forward with an amazing 3pt stroke, albeit he is very slow and overweight( 260 lbs) to be a fully capable SF. Overlooked by every team in this year’s draft, Manuwaii averaged career numbers of 16.5ppg and 6.9rpg with the Hawaii Warriors during his 4-year tenure at the University.

GAME - GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS


QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS:

1ST QTR
The game started off nicely for the Warriors and especially for Jason Richardson who was 4/4 in his first attempts from the field, all of which were mid-range jumpers.The match was open until the 4th minute but then a defensive battle ensued to end the quarter, led by Vlade Divac and Shareef Abdur Raheem who finished the first 12 minutes with 5 rebounds. Score: 20-21

2ND QTR
The Warriors began the second period lacking in the defensive end and allowing many easy buckets from the inside.Shareef scored 10 consecutive points with 4 FGs and 2/2 FTs giving the Blazers a 10-point lead, 34-44 in the 17th minute.But the Californians rallied behind the strong offensive play of Mike Dunleavy and the hustle of the defensive boards by Divac to close the gap by the half-time whistle. Score: 42-46

3RD QTR
The Blazers once again started out strong and dominated the earlier part of the quarter.Led by the inspiring play of Nick Van Exel, the Oregonians sank basket after basket to gain another 10-point lead mid-quarter, 48-58. But it was Divac’s heroic presence on the glass combined with Dunleavy’s amazing versatility that brought the game close again.They were assisted by new face Luke Walton who came off the bench and closed the quarter with 6 consecutive points to end the period 66-66

4TH QTR
The final quarter of the game belonged to the home team completely. Golden State coach Mike Montgomery started the quarter with Jason Kapono at SG deciding to save Jason Richardson’s energy for the later parts of what would probably be a close game,but that would prove unnecessary as Kapono started the period by banging in 8 straight points, including 2 back-to-back 3 pointers to make the score 74-66 10 minuted before the end. Mike Dunleavy continued distributing the ball well while Jason Richardson was so smooth and efficient that no one realized at the end of the game that he had scored 24 points. The Blazers surrendered the game halfway through the quarter and so the Warriors coasted to their first win of the season. Final Score: 93-84 for Golden State

GAME – GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs UTAH JAZZ


QUARTER BY QUARTER ANALYSIS

1ST QTR
The Jazz came into the ball game possessed, playing strong D, hustling on the boards at both ends and scoring like maniacs from the paint,led by the physical presence of PF Carlos Boozer. They started with a 10-2 run while Golden State struggled with Jason Richarson pointless and Troy Murphy having commited 2 fouls in the first 3 minutes. As if that weren’t enough, Jazz’s Mehmet Okur was not allowing any traffic near the basket blocking 3 shots for lay-ups. It was only benchman’s Luke Walton 6 points and defensive efforts that kept the game close at the end of the period. Score: 17 –25

Dale Davis had to sub in when Elden Campbell had a nasty fall and hurt his hand.Luckily , it would prove to be nothing important so he returned to the floor later

2ND QTR

If Golden State fans thought the first quarter was a bad one,tyhey should have reserved their astonishment for the first part of the second one, which saw the Jazz rampaging over the hapless Warriors having an unstoppable 19 – 5 run led by Carlos Boozer and Gordan Giricek to make the score 22-44 5 minutes into the quarter. A blowout seemed inevitable but during the latest 6 minutes of the half, Golden State rallied behind the strong play of Jason Richardson and especially Troy Murphy who gave the team a new energy at the offensive end. Aided by Luke Walton’s strong play off the bench , the Warriors were able to overcome Mike Dunleavy’s abysmal performance and closing the half trailing only by 7. Half-time score: 50 - 57

3RD QTR
Carlos Boozer would in this quarter prove his superiority once again as he brought down almot every rebound at the offensive end providing the Jazz with some easy 2nd chance points. Howard Eisley also picked up the pace with some infallible shooting from the perimeter while Giricek continued to make Jason Richardson’s life tough on defense. On the other hand, Troy Murphy was brilliant and Richardson was scoring consecutive points but those two were hopelessly alone and so the Warriors found themselves trailing at the end of the 3rd period by 14 . Score 68 – 82.


Carlos Boozer was dominant on the offensive glass and scored most of his points from the paint in the 3rd qtr

4TH QTR
The last period of the game was a fan’s delight. The home team came out strong shooting well from the perimeter and dominated the boards. The Jazz were not far behind in performance, but The Warriors were alowly eating away their opponent’s big lead making the game quite the close contest near the end. Troy Murphy and Jason Richardson were still carrying all the load but they were doing a good job at it and so they brought Golden State trailing 96 - 102 with just a minute to go. The offense set itself up for a post play, ball to Murphy, fakes the hook-shot, Boozer bites, Troy drives towards the basket but is double teamed and so he passes to Dunleavy outside. He rises all alone, shoots the 3 and … GOOD!!! 99-102 Jazz with 43 seconds until the final Buzzer. Jerry Sloan takes a time out ordering a post up play with Boozer. Utah follows the plan but Vlade Divac is there to make a critical defensive effort resulting in a miss. Time out Warriors with 20 seconds to go. Mike Montgomery orders the ball to Murphy, Richarson or sharp shooter Jason Kapono for the game-tying 3. Back in action, Speedy Claxton begins the offense while all the aforementioned try to pick up screens to set themselves free for the jay. No can do for any of them , so the ball finds its way in the hands of Jason Kapono with Gordan Giricek stuck on him like glue. Using a brilliand fake-a-first-step-for-a-drive move, Jason had his marker lose his balance, so he took a quick drop step backwards toward the 3 point lane...

, .... rose up for the 3 and...


...NO GOOD!!!

Carlos Boozer would grab the rebound, be fouled , and sink both from the lane to mark Jazz’s first victory of the season. FINAL SCORE GS – UTAH 99-104

GAME – GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS – LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS


QUARTER-BY-QUARTER ANALYSIS

1ST QTR
The game started with the Clippers clearly in charge. Every mid or long range shot they would attempt in the first 5 minutes would unmistakably find its way to the basket, with Marko Jaric in particular scoring 8 points with 2 3pointers during this stretch. Golden State’s answer would come from inside the paint where Vlade Divac dominated the boards and Troy Murphy took care of the scoring , finishing the first period with 9pts. Score: 19 – 20


2ND QTR
The second period of the game saw the Warriors coming in stronger than their opponents and marking an 8-0 run in the first 2 minutes, the score was 27 – 20. Jason Richardson woke up from a 1st quarter slumber and carried his team to the half , scoring all his 11 first half points during a 6 minute stretch in this quarter. Aided by the strong inside play, especially defensively, of veteran backup center Elden Campbell, Golden State managed to keep a steady lead of 5-8 points up until the final buzzer. The half would have ended 41 – 33, but an amazing half court prayer by Shaun Livingston surprisingly found the net at the buzzer, so the half closed 41 – 36 for the Warriors.

3RD QTR
Jason Richardson should have started a construction company with the consecutive bricks he was throwing at the beginning of this quarter.6 shots missed in a row, but still the front line carried the team. The defense was really strangling the Clippers’ perimeter game, while Elton Brand was benched due to foul trouble. Thus the Californians picked up the pace and had a 10-point lead 5 minutes before the end of the period, led offensively by Troy Murphy and defensively by Vlade Divac. Mike Dunleavy and backup guard Luis Flores also contributed important baskets at the offensive end and the 3rd quarter closed 60 – 51 for Golden State.

Rookie guard Luis Flores, despite his 6' 2", throws a dunk among startled defenders.

4TH QTR
This quarter was one coach’s dream( Dunleavy Sr’s ), and another nightmare (Montgomery’s). Elton Brand, despite having foul trouble , was having an offensive rampage in Golden State’s basket, and scored 12 points in the quarter, all from inside the paint. Combined with the offensive rebounds continuously grabbed by Chris Kaman and Mikki Moore, the gap was closed in no time and Los Angeles tied the game 66 – 66, just 3 minutes into the period. QUARTER-BY-QUARTER ANALYSIS

1ST QTR
Mike Dunleavy scored the first 5 points of the contest including an incredible 3-point play from 20 feet, but Dallas was right back with an answer making it 12-6 4 minutes into the quarter. Troy Murphy and Jason Kapono tied the game back at 12 but an inspired performance by Jason Terry and substitute Jerry Stackhouse found the Mavs leading 32-20 in the end.

2ND QTR

Dallas went in strong and aided by Jason Terry and Dirk Nowitzki dominated both the paint and perimeter play.This, combined with the Warriors' defensive shortcomings led to a 46 – 30 Dallas lead 6 minutes before the half,with a blowout seeming a possibily at that time.But that was when backups Jason Kapono and Luke Walton caught fire each scoring 8 pts in the final 6 minutes, closing the gap to 8.Half time score: 54 – 46


Luke Walton,occasionaly playing the PF position,helped his team stay in the game during the 2nd qtr.

3RD QTR

This time around it was the Californians’ turn to come out stronger, led by PG Speedy Claxton who scored 7 consecutive points including a 3-pointer in Michael Finley’s face. Stackhouse kept scoring whenever he had the ball for the Mavs, but Jason Richardson with the assistance of backup rookies Luis Flores and Andris Biedrins led the Warriors in striking distance, 77-75 with 2 minutes to go. Biedrins,in particular,scored 6 consecutive points, all of them with powerful throwdowns. The third quarter ended with Golden State right back in it, 81 – 79.

4TH QTR

The game’s ending quarter was a thriller in all respects. It was a basket-to-basket contest,with each team answering right back both the buckets and the misses.Golden State went up ahead for the first time in the game 93 – 94 with 4 minutes to go. 5 consecutive points by Jason kapono had the Warriors ahead 93 – 99 with 2 minutes left and the arena had gone silent, fearing the Mavs’ first loss of the season. But then it was Nowitzki time… The German grabbed his gun and,acting like a true leader, put 8 straight points in the board out of his 16 in the game, and rallied the Mavs into a 102 – 101 lead with the final possession going to the Warriors. The ball found itself in the hands of Kapono right under the basket with 3 seconds left, but just as the sophomore was getting up among the crowd for the game-winner, Jason Terry’s quick fingers came up with the steal sealing Dallas’ victory, 102 – 101.


Jason Kapono was banging them in from everywhere but in the end, it wasn't enough.

THE GAME: SAN ANTONIO SPURS vs. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS


QUARTER-BY-QUARTER ANALYSIS

1ST QTR
The Spurs came in strong in the quarter and were leading 9-4 after 4 minutes, led by an inspiring, both offensively and defensively, Bruce Bowen, who had 7 consecutive points during this stretch. On the other hand, it was Troy Murphy along with Mike Dunleavy who carried the Warriors on their back, combining for 13 straight points which, combined with Tim Duncan remaining scoreless, had Golden State leading at the end with 22 – 28.


Karl Malone made his debut with his new team,the Spurs, in a final attempt to end his carreer with a championship ring

2ND QTR
Tim Duncan obviously couldn’t get it to his stomach that he was kept pointless in the first 12 minutes, so he came out in the second period a man possessed, banging in 4 straight dunks and 5 rebounds in 3 minutes.Despite TD being unstoppable at the offensive end, Golden State was doing a pretty good job taking Parker and Ginobiliout of rhythm,thus keeping the lead up until the end of the half. Offensively, Troy Murphy was calling the shots with help from Speedy Claxton, thus the half ending 42 – 45 for the Warriors.


When even Speedy Claxton makes 3s, then Golden State has to be playing good ball...

3RD QTR
Tony Parker had a poor first half, but was nothing like that at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Consecutive made jumpers and finished passes to Duncan lifted the home team to take the lead again , 49 – 48. Brent Barry was doing a good job shootig and defending, Manu Ginobili hit the open shots he was provided with while Troy Murphy was battling it out on his own for the opposition. Jason Richardson was nowhere near being consistent and Mike Dunleavy had gone silent after the first 5 minutes of the game… Score 68 – 63 for the Spurs.


TD had a dominating presence in the 3rd quarter and helped his team take back the reigns of the game

4TH QTR
Tony Parker continued his show, with Ginobili picking up the pace.That, along with Bruce Bowen’s and Tim Duncan’s overpowering presence at the defensive end had Golden State struggling for a basket during the 4th quarter.Jason Richardson was doing his best with help from another one of Jason Kapono’s offensive breakthroughs, but those 2 were on their own and could not compete adequately with the San Antonio Basketball machine. The gap reached double digits 5 minutes befole the final buzzer and the Oaklanders just gave up the fight. The Spurs coasted through the rest the game getting an easy win. Final Score: SA – GS 90 – 78.


Jason Kapono once again conributed from the bench but his efforts were not enough to chalk up the W.
