Stoudemire, expected to be named as an All-Star reserve next Tuesday, said he has accepted an invitation for his second try at the annual display of jams, crams and slams by the NBA’s most acrobatic jumpers and dunkers.
“I’m in it,” he revealed. “I’m going to try to bring the trophy back to Phoenix. I’ve got something in the bag of tricks.”
He refused to share any ideas he’s been working on so far for the competition, but did make one guarantee.
“It’s going to be fun,” he grinned.

I'm just looking forward to see if JR Smith will be asked to join.
But Stoudemire is an interesting choice, it's always interesting to see how the big men could fare in the dunk contest.
Sun Feb 06, 2005 3:42 am
I think smaller dunkers have an advantage over him, so I don't think he can win it, although his between-the-legs in his first contest is definately underrated.
If neither of the two J. Smith rookies is competing, they should cancel the whole event.
Sun Feb 06, 2005 3:46 am
Im not to fund of big guys competing in the dunk contest. The dunks he has pulled off in the 2003 Slam Dunk contest were all done before by smaller players, I hope he really has something in his bag of tricks

I don't know what's so special about Amare in a dunk contest. He doesn't have anything special to show, he just dunks hard.
Sun Feb 06, 2005 4:32 am
Yet we were all awe-struck & openly gaping when he threw it down on Kandi Man. The kid's got hops & he's athletic. Give him a chance, perhaps he's got some funky shit up his sleeve.
Sun Feb 06, 2005 4:57 am
First of all, who would want shit in their sleeve? Second, he can't have shit up his sleeves, the uniforms don't have sleeves.
Besides, the dunk on Olawakandi was good, IMO, just because it was on Kandi. had it been in the open court with no one on him, like it will be in the Dunk Contest, it wouldn't have been as good.
Sun Feb 06, 2005 5:37 am
Yeah, both Smith Rookies should compete. Amare is too heavy for slaming it fast and acrobatic, so I'm sure he won't win. Ricky should get a chance, too. But the thing I would be most happy of is Desmond Mason coming back.
I think since too many players dunk really sick, they gotta put more than 4 players in the Dunk Comp, just like 1985-2001...

I don't know what's so special about Amare in a dunk contest. He doesn't have anything special to show, he just dunks hard.
He did do a through the legs, and he attempted a 360 windmill or whatever it was last time that he missed.
If neither of the two J. Smith rookies is competing, they should cancel the whole event.
Josh Smith is injured and on the injured list, don't know when he will be back.

The fact you took it so literally is scary.

I'm not emphasizing the dunk only, I'm trying to emphasize the fact that he actually managed to do it with so much style. For a big guy he gets up pretty high, for a big guy he's pretty athletic. That was in a game, yet he managed to throw it down, perhaps in open court he can do something that really makes us go damn. Besides, as Fgrep mentioned, his between the legs was off the hook.
Bottom line is there are people out there that enjoy watching big men dunk.

Stat is a awesome power dunker that can posterize you, perhaps the best at his position. But he should keep it in the games or invite a teammate to dunk over him. All the dunks I have seen from him are just hard or in your face style, nothing creative Imo. His between the legs dunk was good but not great, it has been done by smaller players and it looked better on them Imo (Rider, Davis, Kobe etc.) Same with the 360 type of dunk which he missed.
I wish him all the best but he wont even come close to winning the thing.

I would like to see one of the J. Smith rookies and Iguodala in there
Sun Feb 06, 2005 7:56 am
I wanna see Lebron of course
Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:26 am
Iguodala would be good IMO

Dunking hard is an interesting thing. Its sort of power and adrenaline such a dunk has. You can have players rocking the cradle or windmilling, which have grace, but the thing that also pumps the crowd is dunking hard.
In fact, Human Hilight Film won the contest because he dunked hard. MJ was better in 85.
Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:31 am
Nique could do some semi-fancy stuff while dunking hard though. IMO, Amare just can't do that.
Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:34 am
well we all know fred jones will be one since he has last year's winner. i think josh smith will get in and not jr smith since josh smith has threw down more big time dunks than ive seen jr do. jrich might partcipate again
Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:41 am
amare's a good in game dunker but i don't think he'll be that entertaining in the dunk contest.. he might have a lot of power but he lacks finesse.. have you ever seen him do a windmill?
for finesse look up: vince carter, jason richardson, desmond mason, michael jordan, kobe bryant
having said that, im not saying its impossible for power dunkers not to have finesse.. case and point, look at dominique wilkins

But Dominique Wilkins wasnt near the physical size of Amare, it looks better if a smaller guy dunks it very hard then a big guy. Dominique also had alot more creativity then Amare does, its a combo you should have if you want to win a dunk contest...Slam it home with creativity and power...not just power or creativity altough I think the creativity is what decides my personal score for the dunk.

Iguodala would be a very good pick for the competition. It would be interesting to see if he has some shit up his sleeve other than windmills...
And yea, Desmond would be real nice to see in the competition, as he is one of my most favourite dunkers, although I don't know if he's still able to throw it down as he used to a few years ago (remember the two-handed between the legs dunk that he almost made).
And about Amare in the competition; as several people has already have said, he is not a player that dunk with graze and style, rather than power and authority. But when it comes down to a dunk contest graze and style will four out of five times beat power and authority.

I say he's got a fair shot, he surprised the hell outta me after he did a through the legs dunk pretty easily two years ago. Wow, my first post in 5 months, glad to be back.

Yea, he might do an off the jumbotron armpit-in-the-rim dunk and make the rim all funky. Or he might pull off a 720 or between the legs twice dunk.
